GAF Votes FOTY 2011 Thread Fail Of The Year

Weird, I've never heard of FOTY before. Somehow I missed the 2010 and 2009 threads.

I'd definitely go with Sony and the PSN debacle.

Second would be LA Noire and its development hell.

I think L.A. Noire deserves to take this honor. Since I don't have a PS3, and I never played DA2, I can't really say. However the PSN network outage is a close second for the way Sony handled it.

PSN hack and the resultant exposure of their 'security', by far. The lack of security measures where customer data was concerned is something of an example of what not to do. The failure to get in front of the situation and own up to the problem early demonstrated how not to respond to this sort of breach, as well.

+1 for the PSN outage. I had no credit cards on file, and still don't, so it didn't affect me aside from not having online gaming on my PS3 for so long. But it was the response from Sony that pretty much clinched this for me.

Dragon Age 2 is merely (apparently) a bad game. Worse things have been done.

Such as a certain mad hardware company demanding private information from YouTube and Slashdot, ordering raids on people's properties, posting their own encryption keys on Twitter, and eventually letting themselves get hacked downing their entire online infrastructure for a considerable period and losing the personal private data of tens of millions of people in a PR disaster that actually made newspaper headlines.

Yeah, they win.

Though I wouldn't call it winning.

yeah, this

And you could say the same thing about Microsoft regarding the XBL hacks.

I don't know if I'd equivocate social engineering cases (even a lot of them) with letting everything you know about your customers be accessed in one fell swoop, but MS could have more aggressively dealt with the FIFA situation.

PSN Hack was insane and the free games for everyone was also a crazy end to it. It has to win for the sheer monumental craziness and widespread effect of it.

The FIFA situation isn't over last time I checked. They're still dealing with it now. Unless I missed something?

Regardless, in that scenario I'm inclined to blame lax security at the individual level instead of the service provider, so it's less 'corporate fail' than 'FIFA players fail'.

Dragon Age 2 laps the competition.
With the PSN hack, sensitive information from millions of people was compromised and online play was simply not a thing you could do on your system for a month.

But hey yeah, a sequel was a big disappointment, that's much more serious.

Brink is much more serious than either.

Homefront, everything about the game was a disaster, from the balloon stunt to the game itself, and it was the beginning of THQ's problems in 2011.

PSN hack.

Dragon Age 2 ruined the lives of a few tasteful (but misguided) gamers. The PSN outage affected millions.

PSN outage

People saying Skyrim PS3 must only remember events from the past three months.

I suppose we'll have to wait to see what the overall reaction is to KOTOR, but BioWare as a whole has slipped dramatically.

On the services side, the PSN hack wins. Not even that it happened, but that initial silence and the length of time it took them to get even online multiplayer back was glacial. Runner up would be EA for their terrible FIFA snake oil resulting in so many hacked accounts.

I'm calling 2013... bioware aka EA (EA will drop the EA brand for Bioware no doubt ;P).

PSN didn't affect me, so... I vote for LA Noire. So much for expecting a western take on Phoenix Wright...

3DS biggest fail of 2011

Nothing really stinks up the place like the PSN hack.

(and the seamless closure of the PS3 security hole is among the most amazing stories of the year)

PSN hack didn't affect me in the least so I couldn't care less.

Dragon Age 2 was a terrible game that wasted hours of my life, so my vote goes for Dragon Age 2.

Sony's treatment of the jailbreaker/posting the jailbreak on Twitter is top for me. PSN Hack is second, so if you want to roll it all into one big Sony fail in 2011 that works for me.

Skyrim PS3.

LA Noire is just a game people disliked (I liked it...). The Sony hacks were one in a string of cyber attacks this year. But the fact that Bethesda released a broken product AGAIN. That's news.
