GAF Votes FOTY 2011 Thread Fail Of The Year

Only 2 fails for me this year:

2. LA NOIRE - Most boring game ever
1. Hackers who talked trash like "PS3 is hacked forever", "they can never patch this masterkey bitches", "give it 2 months and there will be plenty of homebrew apps" - where are you now? that was the biggest selfpwn '11

It looks like this is a two horse (Sony/EA) race to failure.

That Tiger story just takes the cake though for me. Wow, that's some balls right there.

I do wish the media would pick up the Skyrim ps3 story though. That shit is wrong on so many levels.

I agree that the PSN outage should definitely be the fail of the year, but I've never hated a game as much as I do Duke Nukem Forever, so my vote goes to that piece of shit.

PSN hack, nothing comes close. Down for a week with no notice on why. Finally saying we got hacked. Insert some 4 weeks of lunacy to follow, taking even longer for everything to be back. Wasn't there over 100 bannings between the three big threads(With GeoHotz situation being lumped in)

Dragon Age 2. What a fucking unmitigated disaster. Though in a year or so, I think Bioware as a whole may wind up being the popular retrospective FOTY for 2011. Dragon Age 2 kick started a rather poor year for them, what with the studio becoming an abused brand to sell traditionally non-Bioware games (like C&C), losing recognition as a great studio (I believe there was some list which they were pretty high up the year before, and this year have sank dozens of places) and the disaster that is TOR (as a game -- I don't care to comment on how successful [or not] it will be commercially). Whilst neither of those two are as bad as DA2, it certainly set the tone for the rest of the year for them.

At least with Skyrim PS3 there's a great game behind the awful issues, and I'm sure the folks that made the game are pretty bummed that their hard work on the game design, improvements from Oblivion and the world they crafted and so on, has been undone by these issues. Criticism is certainly due, but I think Bethesda released it on PS3 in good faith, even if their testing was so obviously lacking.

On the contrary, Dragon Age 2 was simply shat out, and Bioware have shown very little remorse for it, instead opting to blame the fans for not getting it, or whatever. So that gets my vote.

Skyrim PS3 without a doubt.

Bethesda still has not acknowledged the massive core flaw. They are still treating it like it is some one in a million bug they can patch. If you play Skyrim enough on one character/save, it will become unplayable.

I don't think the younger gamers realize how huge Duke Nukem was in the early-mid 1990s, and the 14 years of anticipation for DNF. It's failure has to be the not only the FOTY, but a failure that spans a generation of gamers.

Seriously, me and my friends loved that DN. . Now some have kids old enough to play the sequel (if not for the mature content) . . and be disappointed by it.

10. Death of gaming mags.
9. EA banning SP games.
8. Online Passes
7. No English Miles Edgeworth 2
6. Day one DLC
5. Studios shut down
4. VGAs
3. PSN Hacked
2. Retailer exclusive preorder bonuses
1. Patches, patches and more patches

Excellent list.
You're no fanboy. I really like that <3

My vote goes to the EA/MS Fifa debacle.

I don't see how anyone can say it was the PSN outage when Sony at least apologized, corrected the problem, and gave away free stuff because you had a chance at identity theft. The Fifa thing wasn't a chance at theft, it was straight up theft with confirmed cases and they swept it under the rug.

This is way worse than the PSN outage, but one got more coverage because Sony actually acknowledged the problem and gave their customers a heads up.

Skyrim PS3 as a close second for knowingly selling a broken game even still.

Edit: I feel like I should mention that the PSN outage was a huge screw up that was mishandled grossly, but at least it was acknowledged eventually.

If you were to ask the mainstream press about their fail of the year, they'd all unanimously cry DUKE NUKEM FOREVER.

Thankfully GAF didn't bother playing that disaster and was instead spending time with Shadows of the Damned... a game nobody outside of GAF purchased.

Ya, I think this is something I have found puzzling in the almost unanimous bitching about Sony when no actual damage was done other than loss of game time while people are losing money and losing accounts on XBox Live due to EA and MS. Should just include EA has the biggest fail as their games were disappointing and they have done numerous stuff to piss off people such as the Fifa debacle as well as banning people from playing games and removing games from Steam to sell on Origin. The only positive thing EA has done this year is give me Wing Commander 1-3 on GOG.

PSN outage. When it's on every news channel and seen as one of the biggest security breaches of all time, you know you're in serious trouble.

The main reason I gave Skyrim PS3 over PSN is because the PSN was a malicious attack. Sure Sony could have had better security and handled it better but at the end of the day someone committed a crime against Sony and in turn their customers.

On the other hand, Bethesda has an established track record with PS3 issues and knowingly deceived the public to cover up the PS3 issues. Reviewers who specifically aske for PS3 copies were given x360 copies. They still don't even admit to the issue as of today.

Sony lost a fuck ton of money and PR face while Bethesda is raking in the money and awards and no one gives a fuck but nerds. I was irked with Sony, I am fucking livid with Bethesda.

Well in the PSN hack people also had their emails and passwords leaked in addition to lost game time, but yeah I agree. I guess people just don't care about the unauthorized access on Xbox Live accounts until it happens to them. If it happened to them they'd realize that it's much, much worse than the PSN outage. With the PSN outage people just had to sit back, maybe cancel a credit card and wait for Sony to shower them with compensation. With the Xbox hacking/phishing you have to call up support (and sometimes fight) for there to be any fix. You'll wait much longer than the PSN outage and there entire time you'll be in the dark about the status of your account. It just seems like your account is in limbo for weeks. And Microsoft isn't offering you any compensation, they don't even promise refunds. No games journalists are going to fight for you besides Patrick Klepek. During the PSN outage, everything about PSN was halted so gamers weren't really missing out on anything besides maybe play Brink online at launch, but if you're a victim of UA on Xbox Live you're going to miss 2+ months of new games that your friends are playing, game events, deals of the week and etc. And when/if you do get your account back, it's violated with changed info and scarred forever with Fifa 12 achievements and maybe some other games you don't want on your games played list. Nobody's PSN accounts was looted and vandalized. People really don't seem to understand or care.
