Lots of other good choices already mentioned, too. I was very tempted to throw in Street Fighter or Half Life, but it's hard to top Nintendo's big 3 in terms of longevity and consistent quality, IMO.

Baldur's Gate would also be a personal favorite, but I don't even know if it qualifies as much of a franchise. I'm still praying for a BG III.
