GAF, what is the scariest game you've ever played?

So is P. T a demo for an upcoming silent Hill?

No, it's a playable teaser. It's a completely seperate game, and basically just a little experiment made to conceal the fact that you get a teaser-trailer to the new Silent Hill when you beat it, but the demo itself is the thing everybody remembers, not the fact that it's a precursor to Silent Hills.

I can understand where your coming from but the game offsets any frustration with the puzzles by having such excellent audio design. Not only does it create a feeling of constant tension but a lot of the time it helps direct you on what you need to do next. The Visuals + amazing Sound grounded me into the game more than anything I have played before. The random nature of the ghosts appearances just kept me on edge the whole time as well.

for sure. i thought the randomness was the best thing about it - visuals aside. in the end it does leave me excited for Silent Hills, but i definitely dont want it to really on anything quite as... meandering as PTs puzzle structure.

also, im changing my answer

NOPE. i dont need that Jinjo. i really dont.

Yeah PT was pretty creepy, they nailed the atmosphere incredibly well, very unsettling stuff.

I couldn't make it very far in Outlast

Eternal Darkness was the Bees Knees, I love any game that messes with "insanity". Really creepy stuff.

I remember as a kid I was super freaked out by Ocarina of Time. Everything in that game was campy and silly, then I went down the well. W T F Nintendo.

Siren is terrifying in an atmospheric kind of way

PT. Amnesia is close but PT is on a whole other level. I'm not a huge horror game guy what with me being a little wuss so I've not played a huge amount.

I remember when they were showing reactions to the game and people thought they were faked...

They were very fake... or more like Konami hired some actors who were overreacting for the moneyz. I sure made some noise when Lisa jumped me in the game but I don't understand how anyone could act like those in the Konami trailer for real.

I think the most scary thing in the game is probably this though:

She's sexy

This might sound ridiculous, but Gone Home scared me shitless. I kept on waiting for
the sister's ghost to show up, lol
. All the ambient sounds and flickering TVs really got to me, too. I don't like horror games much -- I find them stressful and often times corny. Same for horror movies. So, maybe my fright tolerance is a little too low, haha.

Silent Hill on PS1, the one with the guy with Gums showing. Was in middle school at the time and I didn't last long in that game..

I wish they would stop using this erratic movement of the head/body thing for a change. It was scary the first time we saw it 15 years ago.

Alien Isolation in complete darkness in 3D on my projector covering most of the wall with my headphones simulating surround sound with Dolby Headphone. Outlast with the same playing conditions was scary too.

I think movie cliches feel fresh when they're used in games though, because you're interacting with it.

The thing is though, is that it will constantly work, because it's un-natural. Seeing the human body deformed and erratic is both relate-able and unsettling.

It's definitely overdone, but like the poster above mentioned, when done well I have no problems with it.

Oh and I definitely agree with you Demons/Dark Souls have some horridly terrifying moments lol. I remember being completely unsettled in the tower of Latria in Demons Souls.

I agree that it will work because it's unnatural and it does make Lisa creepy when she stalks you in the hallway, but with that said, if you recognize it as a cliche then it does actually kind of fail, because the point of these things is that they shouldn't be recognizable. They should make you go "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?" and not "Oh she's making sounds from The Grudge and twiching like X other character"

P.T. was one of the scariest games I've played in recent memory. Amnesia did a better job of building upon your own fears without actually showing anything. I was scared out of my mind and quit at the same spot every time cause I thought I knew there was going to be something around a corner.

I'll also thrown in Dead Space 2 and
the return of the Ishimura.

Yeah, something like that. You explained it better than i could.

Minecraft.

That first night is nothing short of terrifying.

Makes me think of my first night in 7 Days to Die (this was before they removed the nightly zombie auto-zerg, though I think that was put back in as an option recently?) I was stood on top of a garage near a farmhouse as the sun was going down when multiple zombies, screeching and growling began running through the cornfields from all directions towards me. It was awesome and scary.

Alien Isolation is probably the scariest game I've played though, or rather tried to play.

I also thought Amnesia: Machine for Pigs did a great job in the atmosphere department. This game tends to get overlooked by its big brother.

P.T. without question.

There were times I didn't want to continue playing because it was too scary. I've never had that feeling in a video game before. Ever.

Alien: Isolation definitely comes in a close second.

I'm playing through it right now and it's brilliant. Pretty big spoiler -->
The part when you're in Apollo's core and you discover an Alien hive is the most terrifying moment of that game thus far.
Also, fuck those Androids.

Not scary but the two tensest, paranoia inducing experiences so far have to be PT and Alien Isolation.

Still love Silent Hill 2 for the disturbing tone and atmosphere but Alien and PT are something else.

OK i watched the PT demo on youtube. Was the guy playing it wrong or was he just walking around the same room over and over - a few things happened but is the demo only on that one floor and nothing really happens?

ha, no

game works off triggers, a lot of people get to the first encounter and stop there thinking the game is over

nah, there is much ... much more, and much worse, stuff after that

but yeah it takes place in that single circular hallway

No that's pretty much it, but I honestly think playing it is completely different than watching someone else. I think people who had never heard of PT need to realize its not really a game or a demo for a game. It's an interactive teaser.

P.T.

No movie or game has scared me as much as this. I was sweating like crazy, and had to actually put the game down, I just couldn't stand that feeling anymore. And I loved it.

I've always enjoyed horror titles in the past. I played through all the real Silent Hill and Resident Evil games in the PS1 and PS2 days. Last gen it was Dead Space and Condemned sprinkled with a bit of Amnesia and Siren. This gen though has brought the most unnerving titles I've ever played.

PT is dominating in this thread as it should. The thing is I couldn't get too far in Outlast either. I'm going through Alien Isolation at the moment and it's a really good horror game as well. Even TEW picks up at around chapter 5. All of these to me do horror better than all of the "classics" that came before it.

saw the tall woman thing and a baby in a sink - then the guy got caught and died and it restarted back in the room from the beginning - is that it?

yeh thats the very first section i mentioned

most streams stop there, thinking the game is over but nah you continue on

the game is over when the silent hills reveal is shown. you should read the P.T OT thread, shit was hilarious
