This shit is gonna bang for Nintendo during the holidays.
I get the feeling this is meant to be a Christmas present and probably won't be in high demand after that.Live is potentially hurt by its barrier to entry, for me.
If it were the same $100 package, but included two cars, and allowed the second player to join in from a smartphone, that would be so much more of a sellable product to most people.
Asking people to spend, what is it, $200 for two cars, and to have or buy another Switch? Yeahhh.
Yes, you can play single-player, and there will be joy in racing through your living room from a bugs-eye perspective, as if it were a whole new world, with your custom tracks, but as Destroya pointed out, the design, the laying the tracks down... it’s multiplayer-centric, and based around that kind of fun. Most people aren’t looking to build tracks by themselves when they get off of work, just to race A.I. Koopalings.
Maybe I’m underestimating how many people know people with Switches and an interest in this game, though. Or perhaps children. It just feels a lot like connectivity all over again — the ultimate multiplayer fun, at a crazy-high hardware cost.

It definitely feels like one of those presents I got as a kid where you play with it for a week then forget about it.I wouldn’t underestimate Nintendo, ever, lol. They turned a $100 weighing scale into one of the best selling games ever.
Yeah, though, it’s pretty perfectly suited for this.
Its certainly impressive. No doubt there.I want to say though, despite the hard critiques being rolled out, this game’s concept is still magical. I smile every time I see the mushroom boost make the cart go faster in real life, or that items actually affect it.
The barrier between real life and fantasy being broken down like that, is the most interesting thing.
Yeah, it is definitely aimed at families with multiple children + Switch consoles. The concept is really fun but I am not the target marketLive is potentially hurt by its barrier to entry, for me.

Hoping it ends up on sale next year and I can get two karts without feeling like I just blew $200 on a toy.I get the feeling this is meant to be a Christmas present and probably won't be in high demand after that.
Scott Hawkins said:“When Warner Bros. got the first playable build of Mortal Kombat 11 up and running on Nintendo Switch, I flew down and met with the team down in southern California. One of the executives there was meeting with me and showing me the game, and we were playing it, and he looks at me and he says, ‘Scott, are you sure Nintendo wants this game on Nintendo Switch?’ And I said, ‘Yes, we absolutely want this game.’
He was concerned because it’s a mature-rated title that it wouldn’t be Nintendo-friendly. But clearly after seeing the first month’s worth of sales and see it be the number one game on the platform, it shows that yes, there is an audience. There’s an audience for lots of different types of content on the platform, and this was a big success.”
Mario Kart Live is such an amazingly cool thing, honestly. I would've loved it when I was like 6.
It really looks like a super fun toy! Too bad I have neither kids nor space to warrant the purchase of it.
Warner Bros. exec initially had some concerns that Mortal Kombat 11 would be too mature for Switch

While Mortal Kombat 11 was in early development on Switch, Hawkins met with the team and was chatting with an executive at Warner Bros. We don’t know who exactly this person was, but they were “concerned because it’s a mature-rated title that it wouldn’t be Nintendo-friendly.” Mortal Kombat 11 was ultimately “a big success” on Switch, so Hawkins used this story to demonstrate that you can find “an audience for lots of different types of content on the platform”.
Nintendo has been strange about this. There are plenty of examples of third party censorship from the 80s/90s. Now they let third parties do whatever they want and Sony is the one censoring games. It’s crazy how long-lived disinformation memes can be. An eternity ago, Nintendo was the only platform holder that allowed BMX XXX (it’s what it sounds like) to be entirely uncensored, on the GameCube. That was twenty years ago.
I get the feeling that a lot of the top brass at these companies don’t understand Nintendo and Nintendo gamers at all. Also that they’re laser-targeted on AAA trends, without paying attention to the market as a whole, often leaving them behind, but that’s a different discussion.

Conversely there have been a number of regional differences with Nintendo first party titles, most recently Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. For TMS #FE on the Switch they used the censored Western version for all regions including Japan which was an odd choice but it seems like they would rather have one version of the game they can release everywhere to make things more translation rather localization. Still, there are some games like Mother 3 that we will never see because they just wouldn't fly over here...
Yeah, they could never bring that over here without pissing off either Reesetera or purists who want the game exactly as it is.Nintendo has been strange about this. I've never played it myself, but the Magypsy's name alone would trigger some people. The game has some pretty questionable stuff in it from what I've seen. What exactly does it do that's so controversial then?
Certainly-it is interesting to watch the fight that is going on between Japanese media in general and the West right now. I've expected the Japanese studios to weather to storm but I've seen a lot of articles about concessions and compromises. I wonder if the neo-puritans will win out in the long run? Hard to keep up with the race to end of subjective morality where everything is simultaneously permissible and nothing is acceptable. The latter seems to be modern-day ideological inclinations, rather than maturity concerns. A just as bad example, but almost everyone is doing it.
Agree. Unfortunately.Yeah, they could never bring that over here without pissing off either Reesetera or purists who want the game exactly as it is.
What Eevee86 posted above. I've never played it either. I also recall there were complaints about the game making a homosexual rape joke as well as a joke about the changing nature of what is considered sexual harassment. The enemies also do a roman salute like the Nazis. What exactly does it do that's so controversial then?

Magypsy
"I see you're not walking as fast now. It seems the word "Magypsies" has made you curious. The Magypsies have mysterious powers, and have been protecting something here for a very long time. They're neither human nor beast, neither man nor woman. I have absolutely no idea how old they are. That...earthbound.fandom.com

There is also this character:
The way some people act, I am seriously surprised at how well Nintendo and Zelda are doing in the Game of the Generation polls. Mario would probably still be in if it hadn't met it's match in the former.
Makes me think that Nintendo/Zelda threads were being wrecked by a small minority of idiot loudmouths, and most Gaffers, maybe even if they don't post as much, are quite sensible.
I couldn't play Witcher 3 more than an hour before I wanted to break my thumbs.Yeah but they picked the Witcher "serviceable combat" 3 over Bloodborne, so their taste is dogshit regardless.

Holy shit. Danny Dudekisser you get a free pass to bully her for the rest of the year.

My own experience, which is limited to be sure, is that mentioning the Switch and/or Nintendo outside this thread hasn't resulted in any stone-throwing or insults. My statements have been either accepted or agreed with. Perhaps we're over-estimating the hostility that GAF has towards Nintendo. As a non-Nintendo guy for many years, my perception was always that GAF was, if anything, pro-Nintendo.
In any large group, there will always be a minority who are jerks or ignorant. Maybe we shouldn't assume GAF is "against us." Maybe that's generalizing from a small subset of morons. Perhaps we should not cloister ourselves in the OT and instead venture forth into the GAF rabble, spreading our korok seeds.
And anyone who doesn't recognize Zelda's quality, even if they haven't played it, has been living in a hole. It swept the GOTY awards. It almost singlehandedly responsible for Switch's early success. It's reputation alone is impressive. You'd have to be pretty dense, to argue against its quality.
Nothing but respect for your take.
However, I can confidently state that this hasn’t been the majority of our experiences here, particularly dating back a few months (has it gotten better? I feel like it’s gotten better). Considerations of bias, or being cloistered in a groupthink thread, while understandable from someone who hasn’t been there, need not apply here.
Objectively, Nintendo discussion has been pretty terrible on this forum, all in all. The kind of thing where you try to discuss, and you have someone screaming every insult in your ear, blatantly trolling, etc.

Hm. Ok. I haven't been nearly as plugged into the Nintendo threads as you have. I trust your opinion and perspective. It's certainly based on more experience than mine is. However, I'll just say that, so far, my experience in discussing Nintendo outside this thread has been fine. Maybe I'll change my tune when I get beseiged by the insults and trolling you're talking about.
To me, though, GAF is a place that is filled with a lot of negativity in general. I don't really see it targeted at Nintendo specifically. Xbox gets an enormous amount of grief, and people are incredibly negative about Sony, even on "Sony GAF." It has turned me off the forum many times; I just had to take a break. It's much worse now, with next gen coming up. I don't think it's GAF specifically. Every game forum I've been on has been like this -- generally, a lot of negativity, complaint, sneering, one-upmanship, etc.

Why would I play video games when I could argue with losers on the internet about them instead?Yeah, it’s a people problem, which I always like to emphasize.
A lot of Nintendo threads get trashed by trolls and console warriors and then we also have threads like this one:
Cool things Nintendo should do but never will because they are Nintendo
- Wario 3D platformer where Mario is the endboss - Mario Kart where new characters and courses are added like in Smash Bros. - Have classic Nintendo characters like Luigi or Kirby live as villagers in Animal Crossing - A proper console Nintendogs with deep progression and tons of activities -...www.neogaf.com
Where it's basically an excuse to circle-jerk peoples Nintendo hate boners.
It's sometimes tiring being a Nintendo fan on here.
At least I have a lot of posts to lol at though.
Make a campfire and then you can skip time until the rain stops. The disrobing was bad enough, but the lamp-lighting ceremony was a royal pain. The game chose then to rain for 40 days and 40 nights, so I was reduced to just sitting there watching it rain...and rain...and rain...and rain.
Then the rain stops! Finally! Quick, grab your torch and get going! Two torches lit, fight with baddies. I forget I'm wielding a torch as a weapon, so I nearly break it. Then the rain starts again. Sonofa... So back up the hill with a nearly busted torch to watch the rain again. Why is it raining so much? I swear I sat there for 10 minutes and just watched it rain. It's not as peaceful as it sounds.
Eventually the rain stops again. I get back at it, but I push the wrong button and end up breaking my torch. Now wtf do I do? I run all over looking for another torch. I'm not going to have to teleport out, just to go buy a torch, am I? I later learned, though I didn't know it at the time, that I could've used any wooden weapon, not just a torch. Doh.

You could also light up your arrows from those lamps for example and shoot other lamps from there.
Search for a shade somewhere, I remember there's one nearby where I lighted up one. Also yeah fire arrows doesn't work in the rain, I just wait until the rain stops. How do I make a campfire in the rain, though? Doesn't the rain just douse it? I tried to use arrows, but I couldn't get it to work in the rain. There wasn't enough space to stand without getting rained on, so the rain put the light out before I could line up the shot and fire.
