Gamasutra: Top 5 console downloadable games

McBacon said:
Can people please stop using the word 'addicting'. I don't want that shit being forced into the dictionary by default.
I'm glad someone else hates this word.

We already have a perfectly good word with addictive, people, please use it.

I don't get it. The 5 games in the Top 5 look good to me. What makes people think there's no way that someone enjoyed those 5 the most this year?

Fair enough, I probably should have chosen my words more carefully in regards to that game, but Trials HD?!? COME ON!

It's good...trust me. It wouldn't be my number 1, but there's a reason it's been dominating XBLA sales. Sposion Man and Peggle would both make my top five though. I don't see how that is all that shocking.

Ok crap was definitely a harsh word but I saw Flower as nothing but an another ten dollar visual showpiece for "games-as-art" people to get annoying about.

:(

Even in a lopsided list, you include one game from a competing service. Otherwise, it looks like you haven't even played the others. I would say the same about a completely PSN list.

I'd rate 'Spolosion Man above Shadow Complex also. I had a blast playing through Splosion Man. SC was cool but kinda dragged on a bit. Maybe I'm just not a metroid/castlevania type gamer?

:lol

Flower and Shatter got Honorable mentions at least.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about WiiWare gems like Excitebike, My Life as a Darklord and NyxQuest.

Well, I agree with Shadow Complex and 'Splosion Man as well.

I love how Trials basically didn't exist before it went to XBLA
Well, reading about how it outsold the one-and-a-half-year-old PC version often offered at half the price in just about one month on Arcade, it seems that it didn't for most people.

No. But the better consoles downloadable games were on XBLA this year. Metacritic agrees with this.

That's stupid. Almost no one reviews PSN games. Also, Pixeljunk Shooter and Flower.

I'm surprised that Battlefield 1943 isn't on this list.

Pixeljunk Shooter
...is barely a week old and probably didn't factor into the running because the author was already writing the article by the time it came out. Flower I'll give you (hell, I'll even throw in Trash Panic and Noby Noby Boy, the latter is probably one of my top 5 games of the year (I'm completely serious)), but I don't think there's some huge conspiracy against Shooter.

I could make a great downloadable game list, for all platforms. As a matter of fact, we need a separate downloadable GOTY thread.

No one ? Games like Shadow Complex, Flower or Trials HD have more than 50 reviews.

Agreed. Spent most of my time on them this year.

Personnally, it's not the kind of thing that I want on PSN/XBLA. It just felt like a restrained version of a genuine Battlefield to me. Sure it's cheaper, but it's still a gimped experience. Downloadable games should be used to offer different experiences, or to revive some old genres (Metroid-like for instance with Shadow Complex)

Right. For some reason, Wiiware games and PSN games don't get reviewed. Don't ask me why. I'm not saying it's a conspiracy against the PS3 or whatever.

My list would include*:

5. Swords & Soldiers
4. Rocket Riot
3. Battlefield 1943
2. Peggle
1. Shadow Complex

*I dont have a PS3 and haven't played any PSN games this year.

Wipeout HD Fury - 89
Flower - 87
Critter Crunch - 87
PixelJunk Shooter - 86

Shadow Complex - 88
Trials HD - 86
Splosion Man - 84

When did those get released on PSN? oO

Misread. Games like Shatter, Flower, Fat Princess or Wipeout still have a lot of reviews.

Chromax : Fury is a DLC. The rest scored lower than the XLA games, and you forget a lot of XBLA titles. Never said it was by a huge margin though.

Save the pity picks for the honorable mentions. Lists should be what the person really thought were the best of the year.

I also dread to think how far I'd verbally savage anyone that says "addicting" in real life. It is "addictive" you fuckshit.

The passage about having access to PartnerNet and being a games tester for XBLA stuff and playing Trials HD for free all day also makes me raise my eyebrow cautiously.

It's also a downloadable console game released in 2009.

Yes, but the game still is old. I never knew there were still Peggle virgins around in the gamesindustry.

As much as I love the Peggle games. They don't belong in any top list this year imo. Escpecially since they're still the same games as years ago.

this is a bold and incorrect statement.

Both platforms had great games. You can't claim one was significantly better than the other via metacritic.

However, PSN had Flower....

but WipeoutHD Fury, Trine and Critter Crunch are definitly some of the best this year.

You might wanna recheck that...

Also Fury can be a DLC, but you can buy it as a whole game, and btw Wipeout HD is a 2008 game... make up your mind.

*edit* Shame you edited your post Cromulent_Word :p

But you can claim that one was significantly good enough to demand inclusion! :lol

You didn't mind listing it in your first sentence....

I'm also forgetting a lot of PSN games, I'm just matching the top 5 like the article is doing.

MightyHedgehog said:
Jesus fucking Christ, dudes. You're seriously not dragging the bullshit that is numbers from review score aggregation sites, are you? Ugh.
He was simply pointing out that what Keikoku said was factually wrong, which wasn't hard to do.

Either I am missing out on "XBLA the best thing since the best thing since sliced bread" or that list is deeply fucked.

Then why you listed its DLC in your list ? It's like adding TLAD and Gay Tony in the XLA list.

Also, I said that you forget a lot of XBLA games, only Fat Princess is missing in your PSN list. And I don't care that much for metacritic, but we're on a "list" thread.

This hasn't been the greatest year for PSN, except for bringing back the PS1 classic.

That doesn't change the fact that there were a number of excellent PSN games released this year.
