Lumines SuperNova and Crash Commando fell into the same gap last year for instance.

Were handhelds even considered for this list by the way? Would Patapon 2 be eligible due to its US Download only status as well as all PSP Mini's, games such as Texder Neo and DSi games?

Mmm, one thing springs to mind - based on the criteria we saw, Virtual Console games should be eligible to be considered, too. And taking that into account, I'd consider Majora's Mask significantly better than at least some of those games. I'd say much the same about Banjo-Tooie, which at least made it into their honorable mentions section.

But yeah, matter of preference, an' all that. I'm just curious whether the VC was excluded from consideration for some reason, when I can't really see justification for that in the criteria.

Banjo-Tooie was slightly retooled (stop-n-swap), thus making it a "new" game (there may be something to be said about making it actually playable, too, but it's easier to focus on the actual changes). MM was not, along with other VC games. Otherwise you get into the territory where GOG stuff becomes eligible and frankly MM can enjoy getting whipped by Freespace 2 and HOMM3.

So really, the lesson here is wait until 2010 to put out a 2009 list.

Honestly, I think the "rush" to get the "best of etc etc" lists out to remain competitive with other outlets is a bit disappointing. I feel it compromises the quality of said lists and articles. It's 14 days, I'd be willing to bet that this list would have received the same amount of attention and tears had it released 2 weeks from now.

I just don't see the need to beat out a best of list before the end of 2009. It makes no sense to me.

I wouldn't put PJ Shooter on a top 5, IMO. It's too easy, sets up some great concepts but doesn't explore them well enough before it's already over. PJ Shooter2: Just A Lot More Of Everything could be a 2010 top 5 contender though.
