Game dev exposes Kotaku: they asked me for $1500 if i want to quote their review of my game!!

So the KFC Dating Sim developer talked on Twitter on how Kotaku tried to rip him off for their negative review of his game.

Here is the "pricing" for their "services"

How can we take these guys game reviews seriously if they take money from devs shamelessly like this??

Edit: it looks like he deleted the tweets, i guess he is afraid of having legal troubles with Kotaku. archive added.

I don't understand they wanted them to pay Kotaku money for speeding the negative review?

Why would you do that?

He should be careful, they might just post all that Harry Potter/Poke Porn onto him as a Blackmail for him to pay the money.

Every month Kotaku seems to get lower and lower in standards. If this and the Porn doesn't kill them, then what will?

Wait. Game reviewers who instantly get upset when publishers don't give them free review copies and who are also quick to attack publishers as soon as some form of "fair use" issue comes up (usually on youtube) actually charge people to quote their reviews?!?!?!

I guess they can control use of their logo .. and charge for it.

As for pull quotes - I'd be suprised ..

Is this shit normal ?

When I was publishing my first game, I contacted various individuals at you tube to do a review of my game - 95% of them sent me back a template email with pricing, like - $500 Including your game in top 3 of out 10 best android games of the month. $1500 whole episode of our android games series devoted to your game, etc.

OP doesn't surprise me at all.

Didnt EA catch flak for doing something like this a few years ago? I couldve sworn it was either battlefront or battlefield that they were called out on.

Youtubers i can definitely believe do this. The vanoss crew for example often have segments talking about games people should play with #ad but they never really play the games themselves (or atleast never for more than one episode.)

As far as I know advertising side of Kotaku has nothing to do with reporting/reviewing/editorial side.

And would wait for the full story on this because as presented it makes no sense

Ummm... That has to be a scam and likely not from Kotaku. Now he deletes these tweets? I know everyone loves to hate Kotaku, but perhaps we should hear the whole story?

This dude needs to shut the fuck up. It's like he's trying to shit on "journalists" while being a "journalist". He has no idea what the fuck he is talking about. He admits so in the video.

What that pricing scale tells me is that when reviewing a AAA game reviewers are probley reminded that if they throw a positive quotable line in, the company has a chance of making bank for being used in advertisements and box covers.
That aside, Kotaku has been shit dating back to last generation.

Usually it's the other way around. The publisher would ask permission to use a quote. And they don't pay for it.
Yeah, this.
The Kotaku story sounds completely insane, never heard of anything like that.

Not as good as OpenCritic, because it uses weighed averages.
As such, it empowered sites such as Eurogamer (who gave MGS4 a mere 8/10 and lowered its aggregate score).

Change to OpenCritic. At least they acknowledged MGSV as Mighty.
Opencritc is my go-to nowadays, but it used to be Metacritic, still is for older games.

Reading the OP and other comments here just reinforces why I never go with official site reviews for games, except less corporate ones like Easy Allies. Yes user reviews can be flawed when it's a metabomb on metacritic or something, but there are way more sites than just metacritic to use and I would rather see a general consensus from 30,000 user review ratings to get an idea for game quality.

True, but if Huber reviews Shenmue 3 I know it will be BS.
