Game Grumps (aka Egoraptor plays some games)

Please never let Ross play another Mario Party game. His mental incompetence is fucking painful. Every fucking mini-game he bitches that he doesn't understand what he has to do.

I stopped watching the Mario playthrough after three whole episodes were nothing but Egoraptor bitching about his failures and blaming it on the game, then bitching about how much he hated it. We get it, man. You can hate a game. That's fine. When you keep whining, it gets stupid and annoying. Talk about other shit, because watching a crybaby isn't entertaining to me.

to be fair, Rainbow Ride can go and get fucked by a trident.

Just caught up on Mario 64, and Arin's descent into madness has been so satisfying lol. But I'm kinda glad it's on hold for now. Even though I've enjoyed his frustration, that feeling lessens when you can tell he's not having fun with it. It got to the point where I just wanted them to just go beat Bowser after at least getting to Rainbow Ride.

Though I've seen some highlight clips of their Sunshine playthrough, I've never actually watched it. Did Arin hate on that game just as much as 64?

Arin was just as frustrating. There was a level where all he had to do was spray the gaint slot machines with water and he talked to an NPC that told him about the water-operated slot machines; he sprayed the wrong part of one once, decided that was the wrong thing to do, and then ran around for the rest of the episode lost in a small square room.

But he also said that Sunshine was the last creative Mario game and all they have now are goombas and koopas when encountering the cataquacks.

That doesn't even surprise me. To be fair though I realize that in certain situations (not to the one you mentioned, just in general) I'm sure Arin and Danny are focused more on entertaining and banter, so I can give some leeway there since they usually don't fail at being entertaining.

But he also said that Sunshine was the last creative Mario game and all they have now are goombas and koopas when encountering the cataquacks.

There are some in that list that I wouldn't necessarily say are new, but I just tend to ignore any of Arin's game opinions. You kind of have to disassociate the Arin from the Sequelitis videos and the Arin playing the games, especially with his belief in "show not tell" lol.

I wouldn't really call adding a tanooki tail a new enemy. Not meow-ifying them, either.

I only included those if they actually changed the enemy in a meaningful way: Tail Thwomps jump around like thwimps from SMW and cat goombas jump and divebomb you.

Plus removing them doesn't defeat the point at all since there are only a couple in each list...

That firetruck thing is blown out of proportion, lol. He was focussed on presenting a humorous show and communicating with Ross, so he's not paying attention to some visual cues that most of us casually watching did notice. Possibly he was just looking at the map or looking for something he recognized to find his way back to where he died.

Arin has done some dumb shit with not paying attention, but this one I understand.

Arin was talking about the creativity of new Mario games though, not the amount of "new" enemies. And a lot of stuff in 3D Land and World just feel like variations on old worlds and enemies rather than completely new stuff, unlike Sunshine and the first Galaxy. And it's fine to re-use stuff like that to a certain extend, but at some point it's just going to feel unoriginal.

Besides that, Sunshine does stand out the most from every other 3D Mario stylistically, while 3D Land and World feel like they have a cleaner, safer look to them. And both Sunshine and Galaxy stand out far more gameplay-wise as well. I think it's understandable why Arin would think that Sunshine is the last creative 3D Mario game, considering that they really haven't tried to stand out from what people see as normal Mario since Galaxy.

By the way, the second 3D Land enemy on that image is actually from 64.
No. Mario 64 introduced the coin purse type enemy, but 3D Land is a different design.

I forgot to include the Mario Galaxy one in my list.

Similar to how Cataquacks are a different version of this guy from Mario 64 in function:

There is more diversity in appearance and behavior in the later games than Sunshine. Most of Sunshine's enemies were basically spheres with faces, including the enemy that Arin was talking about, which was also a variation on an old enemy.

What enemies from that Sunshine list do you think are exuding more creativity than the games that followed.

I'm talking about the overall look and feel of the game, not just what enemies it has. If the only thing you're going to compare is enemy diversity then I'm not going to argue. But from a main gameplay perspective, 3D Land and World don't try to do much to stand out. Sunshine has FLUDD, Galaxy had gravity, but 3D Land and World don't have much of a defining trait aside from them trying to be like the 2D Mario games except with 3D movement.

And even if mechanically they're not very different, just the look of an enemy can really change how you view it. Sunshine had enemies that pretty much were just Goombas, but because of how different their design is they feel like they're part of a different world.

Also, when you argue about something, don't just exclude the bits you can argue against and ignore the rest. It makes it seem like the rest of the argument doesn't matter.

If we base it off of what Arin actually said it is easy to conclude that he was flat wrong. Arin said that Sunshine was the last creative Mario game. That is wrong. Arin said there are no new enemies in modern Mario games. That is wrong. Arin is wrong.

Arin gets a lot of shit for being bad at games but I cut him a lot of slack given that he always has to be trying to be creative while he's playing, think up funny things to say, and generally be entertaining. It's really distracting to be thinking about two things at once. Even players who are really experienced in whatever they're playing often pause to speak because they stumble over their words while they're trying to play.

That said, I actually disagree that there is no creativity or new enemies. I think Nintendo does a lot to keep the games fresh from a design standpoint.

Oh, and FYI, I think Arin's full of shit about a lack of creativity in enemy designs for Mario games after Sunshine. I just think that some of the things being cited are either kind of uncreative or entirely derivative.

Today's Punch Out is only 6 minutes long, kind of weird. I wonder if they had an emergency or something.

Sounds like Danny was to a point where he couldn't take any more. I actually kind of wonder (hope) if they'll put up a second episode of it later today. "Leading to Victory" leads me to think that they wanted to do a short to show how dire the fight was getting before he actually managed to win.

EDIT: Or not.

I don't know why they haven't bought a new timer since they always complain about not being able to easily keep track of the time.

Ross and Markiplier playing Super Mario Kart on the latest Grumpcade. I can't stand the guy. :(

I liked him for a bit but he turned out to just. start to get on my nerves. I'll watch this probably. I wonder why Ross is the non-guest on so many of the grumpcades.

Most likely, we just haven't seen anyone else with a guest yet. I guess it DOES take up the Steam Train slot so that's fair.

It'd be nice to see some of these guests play games with Arin or Danny. I mean, ross is alright, but they're the funny ones
sorry Ross

I have a very short span with Markiplier. I really like him in small doses, but after a while I can't stand him. I'm actually that way with Arin and Ross too, come to think of it. I could listen to Danny talk all day, though.

Nice to see a normal length Punch-out today, although I wonder if it will go on hiatus to give Danny more time to practice. And new, with that second ep having Danny beat Hippo about 5 minutes in, they really could have put that in to yesterday's ep. Although then I guess today's episode would be five minutes, and it would still be an issue. So oh well.
