Game Grumps (aka Egoraptor plays some games)

While I don't think it's as smartly designed, I find a sharp irony in how Arin talks about Zelda's freedom, and how you have to figure things out for yourself - even things that would involve randomly bombing walls - but in SM64, he complains about how obtuse things are and how things aren't self-explanatory (even though they sometimes are).

There are plenty of obtuse things in Mario 64, the discovery is part of the game. That said, there's really no indication of how things inside the clock tower work, no visual indication. You'd need to be paying a lot attention to notice how speed changes based on where the minute hand is. For someone with such a short attention span as Arin, that pretty much a black box.

Shit, SM64 is definitely flawed, but Arin's getting a little silly.

I watch Game Grumps to watch Arin get a meltdown. This is gold for me. I just hope he can at least finish the game and later revisit it.

Tick Tock Clock is amazing. I love that he has had it do 3 out of 4 modes so far and still hasn't figured out why the gears and pendulums keep changing speeds. And Dan hasn't helped at all. Though to be fair, it is tricky to find out the specific method when you Google. I found the exact method on Mario Wiki in tiny text on the Tick Tock Clock page.

Minute hand on the:
12 = Stopped
3 = Slow
6 = Random
9 = Fast

Ah, so thats why it changes. I thought it was just random. I've only played like 5 mario 64 levels myself, so I don't know much about the game.

Are there any other levels left they haven't been to?

I think we can all agree on this proposal

Super Mario 64 needs to do fast-forwarding more often. There's WAY too much non-progress going on, and frankly, I think a lot of very funny moments have come from FFed segments. We'd still get normal-speed clips of Arin getting super pissed like he did in Tick-Tick Clock recently, but without the fucking around. I think we may have been at 100 stars by now, but honestly, I think Arin is against FFing, and it's hurting this series a bit.
I was wondering why they weren't using FF in this one too. Not that I mind. I like more content as long as they keep it entertaining. I'm in the mindset that I'd rather have a longer series of my favorite game no matter how bad the gameplay than a short perfect series. But I know some would disagree.

I do think they should at least FF when he tries a segment enough and just wants to finish it. But I don't think there's been that many times for that to happen in this series because when he fails a few times he just picks a new level. If it were linear and he had to do that one star right then I'm sure he'd FF.

I don't recall him being in Rainbow Ride yet. He somehow keeps popping into the other sky level with just the red coins and keeps falling to earth. Other than that I think he's gone to all of them?

I don't care if he uses a checklist to get the last stars. I want 120!

The Castlevania one is fine since it's the most apples-to-apples comparison he's got. I kind of disagree with his comments on Castlevania IV because his major complaint (that the extra weapons don't have much purpose with the whip being more powerful) is like... You don't like that they threw in extra optional features? Well okay then.

Mega Man X one is also funny but it's not really him comparing MMX to MM, it's just raving about how great MMX is.

It combined with the Zelda sequelitis demonstrates something about Arin's gamer profile which is that he's stuck in an 8-bit mentality of game design. Mega Man is great because it can teach the player without being intrusive, but Mega Man also has two buttons. It doesn't need on-screen tutorials because you'll literally figure everything out just by hitting the buttons at the beginning of the game, and then everything in the game is contextual. 3D games are far more complex and sometimes require tutorials. Now yes, there are many instances where the tutorials are annoying and disruptive, but when you see something like in his OOT sequelitis where he complains about the spinning spike trap and it's like.. You can't keep track of an object moving in a fixed path on the Z-axis? And that's the game's fault?

(btw the "The game introduces a puzzle to you in a safe environment, allows you to 'master' it and then adds a twist to it that tests your skills" formula he talks about in MM is also in Mario 3D World's level design so I wonder what he thinks about that game)

There was a moment in the Sonic 06 play through (which Sonic 06 is NOT a good game at all but I still feel this is worth mentioning in its favor) where Arin was playing as Silver and didn't know what to do, walks straight towards one of the question mark tutorials, then deliberately circles around it while complaining that he doesn't know what to do. Jon gave him shit for it but there's countless times in the Mario 64, Sunshine, Wind Waker, Sonic Boom, Sonic 06 etc. play-throughs where Arin flails around because he didn't pay attention to something in the game that explicitly told him how to use a certain ability or solve a certain puzzle. Danny figured something out in the Sonic Boom play-through that Arin dismissed for several episodes, figured out on his own and was just like "Oh, well it's still stupid"

Game Grumps is a silly comedy show so it's not that big of a deal that they suck at some video games, in fact that often adds to the joke - but when he wraps it up in honest game critique it's hard to take anything he says seriously when you realize how many of his problems with a game just come from him playing badly.

You said it perfectly. His Mega Man X and Castlevania 2 videos seem spot-on, but after watching many years of him failing to pick up on the things the game goes out of its way to make obvious (especially in Sonic Boom's case, where everything is patronisingly colour-coded and characters chime in about it all the time to a fault) it's obvious that he doesn't cope well with certain games past the SNES, and doesn't fully understand that it's not always the game's fault. By extension of that, it's hard to take his actual, earnest critiques of other games as gospel like what happened with the MMX Sequelitis.

That said, though, it's pretty fun to watch anyway! Certainly hasn't stopped me from being a continued Lovely.

Mario 64 could definitely have some fast forwarding going on, specially on the 100 star missions

Honestly I just want them to ditch the 120 star bullshit and just finish the main missions of all levels. I wanna see Arin raging at Rainbow Ride

How I imagine most people feel watching Game Grumps play in this state:

sooooooo true but I love it anyway, Mario64 videos are TERRRRRIBLE but I still watch them and laugh with them.

Look, I'm with Arin on some things, but he's getting mad at the game because he keeps fucking up and rushing through it. I'm sure he'd take issue if someone was shitting on LoZ because they were rushing through the level and not being careful.

Dang it, they seem set on just going to Bowser now. I didn't need the 100%, especially with the 100 coins missions being kind of bad for them, but I at least wanted them to do Rainbow Ride a little.

Honestly, I can't give Arin too much grief over Mario 64. The controls are difficult to get used to. They're nowhere near as user friendly as new Mario controls are. And the camera does suck. And if you don't know how the clock works, then what are you supposed to do?

It's things like Wind Waker that I find annoying. "Check out this shield!" "You need a shield." "WHERE'S THE STUPID SHIELD!" But even then, they're funny and they have fun stories.

I honestly wish that their session as "Sleepy Grumps" would end and they would come back to it once they aren't so tired. I feel their exhaustion is making them even less aware of what's going on than they normally on top of making them more irritable. While I also don't need a 100% playthrough, I would like it if they would at least get most of the stars from the stages just to get the full picture of the game.

Yup. Them being tired as shit is what's causing the bad play. Which makes me conflicted, because I love watching Arin crash and burn in this playthrough.

I really hope tomorrow isn't the Mario 64 finale.

Unless it's an hour long marathon of the last 25~ stars with fast-forwarding and everything. Arin knows people want all 120, but it seems he's really ready to give up. That Thwomp star really got to him. I'm glad he didn't go for that box across those three spinning platforms. I fell for that one too. It was just a 1-Up or something. Plus you can just long jump to it but I doubt Arin would have thought of that at all. Failing while trying to get that one would have really pushed him over the edge.

They should just stop for a little bit. Take out a checklist and figure out which ones they have left. Then do one episode at a time where they just try to get that one star. Make it 15 minutes if needed and use fast forwarding. And make sure to do it when they're not tired anymore.

They can make it up to me if they play through the Galaxy games. I don't remember Arin's stance on it even though I think I asked before.

I kinda want to rewatch 3D World again. That play through was a treat. (They should do a sequel with two more people, preferably Barry and Kevin. Maybe if we ever get a 3D World 2. Imagine the chaos! The deliciously hilarious chaos!)

Do people really want Arin to get the full 120 stars? The episodes that are nothing but him failing to get 100 coins in a level are the worst ones.

Mario 3D World was definitely one of their best but I feel like my enjoyment was hampered by all the fandom drama and conspiracy theories and people trying to write messages about Jon into Miiverse for them to see. I should rewatch it now

I'm loving Munchables. So much. Probably because it's Arin and Danny. Not really caring much for Mario Party. I'd rather they finish that and bring back DKC3.

Just wanted to say Munchables I hope munchables is dropped soon. So tired of seeing it in my feed.

I think they're playing it because it's Katamari-ish, but it's a tad more repetitive than Katamari. I'd rather have them play Katamari Forever or Beautiful Katamari instead.

It's looking like tomorrow might be the last Mario Party 10 for a while, though. I'm hoping for a Danny + Ross steam train to replace it.

Yeah, no, there was no fucking way Arin was getting 120 stars, and I'm glad he may just get it over with. Come back to it later, if anything, but the agony can't keep going on like this.

He is going to be so pissed when he finds this out.

More than likely, yes. Then he'll proceed to continue on his rant about the game.

But anyway, I do hope that Danny will be allowed to play A Link Between Worlds. I cannot get over how excited he sounded when talking about doing so some time ago. I just hope that, should he have practiced during their trip to Japan, he didn't become put off by the game.

Yeah I would much prefer another Katamari game over a katamar like game.
A Danny + Ross steam train would be nice, it's been too long.

Yeah because it encourages you to interact with the game environment for instructions on how to play the game. Especially in the first (not really but for many people) 3D game where not everything feels natural right away

I mean tutorials noooooo

I hope that the negative fan response would humble the fuck out of Arin about his holier than thou sentiments on game design, but I bet otherwise.

He's gotta get out of the 2D bubble he inhabits.

A lot of people here are more understanding than I am. Arin is atrocious at 64. I liked that Dan tried to make sure they made some progress before but it's pretty rough. I especially dislike that they started out this recording session tired. They just had a vacation. Come back to work ready to go or only do an episode or two and come back the next day.

Also, struggling through all those 100 coin episodes only for him to skip Rainbow Cruise would suck as well. I'd rather he never did the 100 coin or secret stars and just complete the levels. Either way, it looks like I'll have to drop them again soon. Don't need Suzy trying to be a thing and Ross on Pokemon Snap wasn't much better. Maybe treating them like a show with seasons would work better and coming back one or twice a year to check out some episodes or series is the way to do it. Some people only watch Game Grumps content. I can't imagine that.

Just do what I do and watch the series which grab your attention and leave the rest alone. I'm currently only watching SM64 and, while it's become annoying with Arin's incompetence, I'm going to see it through to the end. Before that, I haven't watched any of their longer series and stuck mostly with their one-offs or VS..

I can answer both those questions at once. I'd really like to do King's Quest 4 with Ross on Steam Train. Maybe we'll do some longer episodes to make sure it gets done quickly. As much as I love that game, the graphics are very antiquated and may not be for everyone at this point.

Danny speaks eloquently like he talks

Alright, so today's episode of 64 did a perfect demonstration of "here's a mechanic in safe space" (both how the carpet works [giving you a platform to drop onto if you get burned and a way to heal, AND a way to get back to a new carpet] and the fire from the furnace in the house), and I bet Arin is just going to bitch about how unfair the level is. FFS that furnace thing was telegraphed a mile away and the carpet moves so slow.

I'm sorry for bringing in the negativity but I swear Arin stopped playing games after the SNES.

What's funny is I'd just gotten to Rainbow Ride in my own SM64 play through and quit because of how boring/bullshit it was. After seeing Arin on Tick Tock Clock I wouldn't mind if he didn't want to suffer quite so much.

To be fair, I didn't know the carpet would come back in there either. I always avoided getting off it while going through because I didn't want to start over. Though I guess I never thought about how I would start over. So it makes sense to have a safety in place there.

And I'm glad they didn't give up yet. Keep going. They can do it. In time.

I don't recall there being a new carpet if you messed up in the castle.

In the castle I do believe you can leap back to an earlier platform. Honestly though it's been a long time, and I just didn't want to get off the carpet when I played it in the past.

Actually what would make this whole thing sweeter is if they forced Arin to play 64DS...
