Game Informer August Cover Revealed

Yay! Another shooter!

I don't know whether or not this game will be any good, but why is EVERYTHING about shooters now? It's as bad as the mascot platformer craze of the '90s.

Oh man, I'm becoming one of those mean, crotchety old men, aren't I?

You're not man enough to judge a game before having played it...

...was the joke. which is pretty lame in retrospect. and even moreso now that I've explained it.

I like what I'm seeing here. Seems like the hero is a more athletic type. His pose, long rifle/boomerang and slender suit.

Rage as I see it has two competitors out there (from a quality view, not talking sales) and that is Red Faction Guerrilla and Borderlands. Both those game have some pretty unique gameplay traits and it will be interesting to see what Rage offers. If they stay the course and have the console versions locked to 60fps than that's great but hopefully it streams the environment.

When I first look at the cover I tried to not read the name, and trying to guess what this game is. I couldn't, because it looks just freaking like all the other shooters out there!
Why do all games look the same this gen? Is there only 1 creative director in the industry????????

That's what I was thinking.

Do industry people not realize all their games are blending together? This wasn't the case 5 years ago.

Speaking of EA Partners...

I wonder what is going on with the Suda51/Shinji Mikami horror game collaboration announced last year.
we'll find out some time after Bayonetta has been released, I'd imagine

If Id keeps naming their games after emotional states, they are going to run out of the "dark" ones soon.

We have "Doom" ("dread"), Quake (fear), and Rage (anger). So, is their next game going to be called "Elation" or "Whine"?

At least last gen we have more varied art style when it comes to shooters:
XIII (cel-shaded)
Timesplitters (Monkey!)
Metroid Prime (Adventure-FPS)
Red Faction (geo-mod)
Red Dead Revolver (western style)
Heck, even Breakdown (first person brawler) looks more interesting than this pile of clones.

The art design in the screenshots that Draft posted on the last page is superior to every game on your list, save for Metroid Prime.

how does Brawler and Geo-mod and Adventure-FPS relate to the art style at all? And besides, for this generation replace XIII with Borderlands, Metroid Prime with Prime 3, Red Dead Revolver with Call of Juarez, Breakdown with Zeno Clash... and then you're still left with greatly unique stuff like Mirror's Edge, Far Cry 2, Condemned, and so forth. Still, the majority of FPS games - and games in general for that matter - from any generation aren't that divergent and original. Saying last generation was much different from this one in that respect is looking thru rose-tinted glasses, especially considering this generation isn't nearly over yet.

This concept art isn't very noteworthy or even pleasing to the eye, but everything IN-GAME we've seen from Rage looks exceptional, and the gameplay information that is available indicates that it'll be taking the genre in quite a few new directions. The reactions in this thread are warranted when directed at the single picture shown here, but to take it out on the game is lazy and unjustified-- gamers being a bunch of reactionary idiots as usual.

I'm not sure how people can be so quick to dismiss this. It's a new ip from id. I mean it's fucking id, and a new ip. First new ip since Quake 1 unless you want to count orcs and elves, which I don't. They seem to be legitimately trying something new for them, which is awesome.

Not to mention, as someone else said, you're passing it off as generic because of the fucking covert art of a magazine. What? The art we've seen from the game so far has been pretty damned good. Not to mention that this will likely be the best looking 60fps game on consoles when it launches, and almost certainly the best looking 60fps multiplatform game.

When does this issue hit newsstands?

I'm trusting that the character designs that were previously shown are still in the game...and I dunno about you guys but that environment looks really fun and looks designed with both gameplay styles in mind. I can't wait to see more of this game...it's easily my most anticipated game....id's actually gonna make me buy a fucking GameInformer :o

what in the hell

Rage > the sequel to some recently released war fps

edit: :lol at the reception. You guys are so lame.

Seriously. Every id game has been absolutely awesome. Even Doom 3, despite the hate it gets, was a pretty damned awesome ride the first time through, and hell ranks as one of the most memorable levels in FPS history for me. I've probably put more time into Quake 2 online than any other 5 games combined.

I hope they didn't change the style or ideas from what was originally shown. The old footage of Rage looked really great.
I'm sure that stuff is still in there. They apparently have a ton of content to make. They're having to squeeze just to make it onto 2 dvd's. Not to mention they've specifically said in the past that the course they showed, that area, IS a level from the game. That is one of the courses.

I don't see what is so dramatically different in this art than previously released material either. The only thing that strikes me as different is the giant pristine tower in the background of whatever organization has risen to power. We've known about that for a long time, though. This is the first time we've seen any sort of reflection of their presence in the game world, though.

Ugh, I like it better now. All the previous characters had the "I have cancer but just had chemotherapy" look.

Note: No offense to people with cancer.

Borderlands is made by fucking Gearbox though, so that's hardly a fair match.

Lest we not forget what we've seen from the game so far.

60fps bitches!

Still a characteristic of the idTech5 engine right?

Carmack has said that the target for rage is 60 fps, but he has *also* said that Doom 4 (also IdTech 5, most likely with enhancements) will target 30 fps like Doom 3 did.

So easy to tell who in this thread has never played an id game.

Last games I played from them was Quake 4 and Doom 3, so that doesn't really inspire lots of hope about their shooter making abilities now a days.

Still, I really liked what I saw from the early footage and such, but that cover is very... blah.
