Game Informer December: Halo 3 Recon

WrikaWrek said:
No. Halo Wars was the beginning of the construction of a "Brand", Halo Wars is still a high profile game. Made by one of the former best RTS studios in the industry, and high production values.

This thing? This is milking. It's a lower profile game, made by a small group of people inside Bungie, clearly, it won't have the same kind of resources and effort put behind it.

So.. a sub game in the same genre, at a cheaper price point, made by the original creators of the franchise is 'milking the franchise'... yet a game in a different genre, made by somone else entirely, isn't?

Wut?

All of your posts I read here are filled with complaining and whining. You sound miserable and always seem to be negative and pessimistic about things.

Anyway, I can't for this. I absolutely loved the Halo 3 campaign. Is this gonna take place after MC or is it a prequel or same time as MC?

You don't even know if it's at a cheaper price point, it's made by a small team, it's a "lower profile" production, etc.

Yes, unlike Halo Wars (which is a high profile game looking to set itself as part of a brand), that is, as i said, milking.

It's set during the events of Halo 2. Specifically, after Regret's ship makes that slipspace jump to Delta Halo over New Mombasa .

I think I sort of remember that

If it has a lot of the Halo 1 team then this should be golden.

They also mentioned this being very stealth based, which is awesome. That's pretty much how I always played Halo 1. As stealthily as possible.

It's what made Halo 1 so great, you played the game how YOU wanted to play it at YOUR pace.

I wonder if they'll add a cover mechanic. Wasn't there a rumor of a 3rd-person Halo with cover like Gears? Or was Gearbox making that for Xbox 720

One of our newer concept artists, Jaime Jones (of no relation to another Jones we have 'round here) did the cover and another piece inside the mag (an ODST walking down a shadowy Mombasa street).

It's reminiscent of Craig Mullins's style. I like it.

:lol at Wrika backlash--why even bother responding to him if you're not going to refute his points, at least he took the time to formulate an argument before posting in here. What would be the fun in a lovefest thread anyways?

Hmm...H3 is not 6 hours dude. Also, obviously the title is more of a marketing move than anything (recon...lol), but you're judging a book by its cover. To me, this seems like a damn good way to not only get rid of whatever Halo contract MS had them in but give fans something we've clamored for since H2--and you have yet to prove any claims of 'lower production values,' so I don't see why we'd be worried. To me, it seems like a neat little parting gift from Bungie before they lay off Halo for a while.

That right their is one major reason it will probably be cheaper! Also Bungie has stated many times they don't think this is a $60 dollar title, Micro$oft wouldn't even let them say that if they were not planning to release it at a lower price-point.I'm not excepting anything lower than 50 though, but it doesn't matter to me I'm supporting bungle %100. They make it I buy it. I wish this was halo 4 but I'll take all the bungie made halo titles I can get. This will probably be the least! :(

Seriously. If, by his interpretation, this is milking, then that's no skin off anyone else's back if it isn't.

I hope there actually is a lot of new info and some screens, can't wait to get my copy.

it is milking. maybe they will price it as an expansion. $30 sounds fair.

it does sound like a dirge of cerberus. lol.

People are welcome to have their own opinions. I'm sure many will change between now and H3R's release once they become informed. This goes for all people in threads such as these. No big deal.

I totally agree, I've been making a habit of pointing it out when I see it.
I'm completely tired of watching Wrika wreck threads with his posting style.
He always has a good retort and explanation when pressed, but I'm personally tired of it.

When someone gets called a troll in every thread he posts in, its no longer a big coincidence.

Really hope there is some screenshots and gameplay impressions.

I absolutely hate game reveals that are nothing but CG. It's like saying "in some imaginary fantasy land this is how we'd like the game to be!" But it won't, since we don't live in fantasy land.

Awesome. Definitely looking forward to reading about and seeing the game. Could definitely be one of the biggest Fall 2009 games. I think I'm going to end up passing over Halo Wars.

You're not the only one.

Anyone know of some free online tutorials for getting started on concept drawings and sketches? I lost all of my talent after I decided to pursue a degree in Business Administration, but I want to start up drawing again as a hobby.

Any chance of hi-res or wallpaper versions of his work being posted on Bungie.net soon?

omg omg omg omg
Can't wait. Love me some Bungie. I might have to snag that issue of Game Informer. It'd be the first time I bought a gaming mag in over a year.

I love how it's their 2008 Holiday Buying Guide and the only other thing they have on the cover is Halo 3 Recon, like it's coming out this Christmas.

There will be some disappointed readers
who do not keep up with the Internet

I just noticed the silencer (I think that's what it is) on the SMG. Maybe this game will require some stealthiness. I can't imagine you'd have too much luck up close against a brute as an ODST. o.O

Please to enjoy! Also, taking a weekly figure drawing class or something would be fruitful. I've been meaning to do so for a while, but these are lean times.

I bet MS is gonna position this as a big release. Because how do you do it? Do you put this thing out and act like it's no big deal? Then they are watering down the franchise.

It IS a big release.

If they position this as a big release, then they are looking for a easy buck, and that's milking.

5 games in 9 years is not what I would call "milking." See: Guitar Hero for a good example.

Will this even have improvements to the game engine? Because Valve does that for example with the episodes.

What about the price? Same dilemma.

Why are you bitching about things that are unknown at this point?

Halo 3 is a 6 hour game.

The fuck? Maybe on easy co-op. The first time through on normal or heroic is sure as hell more than 6 hours. Are you going to seriously try to argue that Halo 3 didn't have enough content?

And more on the milking thing, this ain't even set during Halo 3. It's set during Halo 2, yet it's called HAlo 3: Recon.

Your logic baffles me.

You don't even know how much content it will have but you're already setting the price point?

No. No. No. Not in any possible way. That analogy only makes sense if you took the Arbiter and made an RPG out of it or something.

It's actually more like Half Life 2: Episode 1 + multiplayer, based on what we currently understand.

If they are really developing this just to cash in... releasing it two years after the original game seems a little strange no? Hell, a lot of popular franchises have a numbered release every year.

Regardless of semantics over dairy production, I await more information before praising or condemning this.

And I will gladly suckle at this udder. I don't really care if it is milking or not -- it's Halo and it's being made by Bungie. That's enough for me.

Also, while it takes place in during the slipspace fallout which occurs midway through Halo 2, the story and the progress of the game are likely to lead up to what we witness in Halo 3. I think it seems pretty clear that the ODSTs involved in this campaign are on a mission to determine why the Covenant decided to land on this part of the Earth, something we only hear more about in the first few missions of Halo 3.

While I think we'll be taking on Brutes in similar - if not identical - fashion to the Master Chief, Bungie's pretty much confirmed in both their trailer and interviews which followed at TGS, that this game will incorporate more strategy than the Halo trilogy itself. This will likely be only dictated by a lower health system and/or lack of recharging energy shields, making death easier and more costly to the player. And it'll probably force the player to attempt avoid unnecessary conflicts, rather than charging headlong into them.

It's an interesting ingredient and I can't wait to see how it will play out.

Halo 3: Recon info in new GI
The December 2008 issue of Game Informer has a cover story on Halo 3: Recon - and it's a doozy. It doesn't contain any new screenshots, but there's quite a bit of concept art, and there's a lot of description of how the game is going to work. There are some very interesting tidbits included:

* Paul Bertone describes the scope of H3:R as "a three to five-hour expansion pack"
* Recon Armor will be earnable for all - complete the Vidmaster Challenge series of achievements and it's yours
* Bungie's Joe Staten says "we do not view this as a $60 title"

Why the fuck would ANY 360 owner piss on HALO? It's still the best shooter franchise on the 360 and fucking peerless on the platform. I still can't believe 360 owners would rather play anything else over this, even during in-between years. If this is being done by BUNGIE then it's not milking.

Ok, so Bungie don't look at it as a full price title..... but I'm pretty sure its the publisher that will be deciding the price.

And MS wouldn't charge full price for a cutdown Halo title...surely!
