Game Informer's February cover is Doom

The real thing is how the enemies just kinda blend in with the background in this dull sludge of brown and steely blues. The original Doom had very distinctive enemy types that IMMEDIATELY stood out, and the level design/traps/encounters are built around that. Bright pink demons, big Red Cacodemons, the sharp red/black of shotgunners or the tan fatass gunners.

Now you have this generic group of proto-demons that all kinda blur together visually and thematically. Like there was a mantra, "Can we make this game LESS visually interesting? I was hoping we could make all the enemies and levels look and feel like the same violent march of nothing."

Yes, it kind of is. :v Especially for games of its type. Colorful isn't a binary "shades of brown versus explosions of pastel". Doom used a ton of colour variation throughout, whereas could you imagine a major FPS being designed with that level of variety in its colour design? It's also to do with the lighting, where you can get very bright areas like this:

Yeah Halo is pretty colorful and does well in terms of color variation (the earlier missions of H5 is a good example of this.) Doom's lighting techniques were--and still are--pretty impressive for the game that it is, but at the same time I'm just not seeing the difference in color between DOOM and the DOOM Reboot. Maybe we'll see more varied environments , maybe some new stuff from the alpha.

I think I'll echo what JC said above regarding distinguishing the enemy from the environment, the reboot footage of the campaign and what I've played of the alpha has a huge issue with that. I hope it's not a design choice.

I'm not seeing what you are at all so I guess we'll just agree to disagree.

Also are you really comparing multiple areas in an already released game to a single screenshot?

What a weird question. What, exactly, suggests that I am basing my comparison on a single screenshot as opposed to basing it on everything they've shown so far?

A lot of this too, yeah. It's not about what colours you use, it's how you use them. Doom uses a lot of traditionally "darker" colours, but it doesn't misuse them.

Man, who could've expected a game series from the mid 90s to look different in 2016?

This is such an odd rebuttal because it's suggesting that style should inevitably change, even if it gets worse. The style used in the current Doom isn't something they discovered many years after Doom - I'm sure that the designers had the tech to do the style, they just realized that it would be detrimental to the experience, while the designers here seem to be taking a relatively safe approach stylistically. In the end, the original game's style will stick with people who played it, while this Doom's style probably won't.

Can't wait. Hopefully we get a release date soon.

Brightly lit environments? 3D games didn't have proper lighting at the time so everything was lit flatly.

"Tons" of color variation? That's a gross exaggeration.

Nothing about the screenshots looks 'brightly lit' either. I think you're hitting the panic button a little too soon here. We've seen one small area of the game in footage so far.

It had primitive lighting, but lighting none the less. Different areas could be lit differently, and light could even be modified at runtime on a per sector basis.

Not gonna lie, I will probably dive in, not at day 1 I do not think. I am getting a slight nostalgic itch recently for games.

The Doom series has been great and after the Dev Hell this game has gone through, let's hope it continues to great trend of the franchise. Cover looks cool as hell though

Hype has deflated a lot since the Bethesda conference. Game looks generic as fuck, the executions are stupid and the levels, what the original games were great for (architecture, maze-like structure), simply seem lacking and sterile. Honestly don't see this game doing well at all, but I could be wrong since it's a shooter from a popular brand, just like Diablo 3 sucked but sold well because of brand recognition.

I'll wait and see how it turns out. Last FPS I judged before playing was Wolfenstein: The New Order and that turned out to be one of my favorites of 2014.

The game is actually pretty colorful judging from the video. Bright red blood straight from MK2, a few different level themes from a fleshy blood hell room to the radiant orange room.

No cynicism here. I'm looking forward to learning more. And I think the cover looks badass. Metal as fuck.

Hopefully it will have a competitive Duel mode (no loadouts or anything like that) with skill based ladder/ranking system. Shame about idTech 6 as it probably means the game will be hard locked to 60fps, not optimal for arena shooters.

Mildly excited

SnapMap will let you make that

Alpha is one of the best games I've ever played. Literally cannot wait for the game proper.

No, your statement only makes sense if the art style gets worse. New Doom looks amazing.

Not digging the Diablo 3-esque art direction. It worked for Diablo but I'm not too in love with this one. Should really try full dark ass creepy occult shit

Put this and photoshop a double barrel shotgun and we're good.

That trailer looks legit. One of the few fps games I'm actually hyped for. Game looks great too. Fuck the haters. Cannot wait to play it and hopefully it comes with a nice MP too

Dying to own this, love Doom. I remember waiting 5 years for Doom 3. There is no exact release date on this yet right?

Also I don't like the Cyberdemon design. I am Hoping the enemies have their unique sounds etc and some in fighting too!

monsters look like joemad designed garbage

Joe mad is a brilliant artist, up there with Romita IMHO, just different style. Seriously calling someone who translated his look to a somewhat successful franchise known as darksiders is not garbage.

You may not like it, and I agree not everyone digs the same design's and style comic book artist's have.

But don't call him garbage because he is very successful in his artwork.

Hmm. Not digging the artstyle in that picture. Looks a little too diablo-ish or something along those lines. I want brutal and grotesque unholy matrimony of flesh and archaic cybernetics! Long live the new flesh!

Not yet, apart from spring 2016 being the last word on it. I'm guessing it might take the May slot that Wolfenstein has taken the past two years.

To the guys who loved the alpha. Were you playing on console or PC?

I had it for the X1 and PS4 and although it was an alpha I thought the movement was off. No weight to your character as you moved around.

I did not get a chance to try it on PC. Any word if the PC version will support user mods?
