Its gonna be a battle between RE VILLAGE and Metroid Dread for me, i think Metroid will be the stronger Metroid game than Village is RE.

And i really liked VILLAGE, but the shooting is not survival horror, and some annoying sections make it a weaker horror game than VII, i think Capcom tried to please everybody by making it more shootey and less scary

And its only just released on console. I dont see how it shouldnt count. Thats like saying we shouldnt include games that were scheduled to release last year but were delayed untril 2021 because of covid.
because it doesn't count. End of story.

I'll play it. I just finished the first, it was pretty good. I can't imagine it being as good as Returnal, but perhaps Ratchet.

Did you beat Returnal?
Returnal is great but the gameplay loop isn't fun enough for me to keep playing. Psychonauts improves on the first game in every way possible and has way more interesting gameplay and exploration than Ratchet, IMO. That said, I love Ratchet too.

And people told me PS5's are hard to find. And yet it has two top games in the poll. Seems like people are able to find them well enough.

Be interesting to see which games end on top. There's a whole tier of games that around the same level.

It might not be a stellar year for a single title or two that is head and shoulders above everything else but it might be a very strong and close race differentiating that secondary tier of quality.

I think diablo will take it overall.

Wow, this is so tough...there's been so many great games this year!

I think once it's out, Metroid Dread will take the crown for me, but I've actually loved about half of that entire list. I think Resident Evil: Village might just barely be my pick out of all of them.

Out of what I have played, Bowser's Fury was the best treat. That game is a perfect, short, sweet experience. For full games, Ratchet was great but I haven't played Psychonauts yet so that might be better. Nothing else really interests me. I played the Medium last year and it was OK.

I absolutely don't agree with 2021 being a shit year. It's been awesome. Returnal, Quake, Skyward Sword HD… All masterpieces. And we still have Forza coming, as well as Metroid Dread and Diablo 2. It's been a banger of a year. Best time to be a gamer.
Ah, that's just my experience. Glad you're enjoying it.

I hated Returnal and Skyward Sword ain't for me. Still need to check Quake out.

Looking forward to Metroid and Forza though.

For myself who plays basically every genre alive, its Tainted Grail. I have tried multiple CB games and never been hooked until now. It has the best voice acting, music and game loop of any game in recent memory. And the enemy design is fantastic. It really feels almost like a Dark Souls card game and Im addicted AF. if they could add some more impact and maybe cinematic kills more people maybe would be talking about it.

Something might be wrong with me. I've barely heard of any of these games. Genuinely, not trying to be edgy. I don't even think the names excite me on first look.

Best indies

Loop hero
valheim

best AAA

resident evil the village
Disgaea 6

I voted Axiom Verge 2, I don't like it that much but this is the only game in the list that I did actually played!

Now the No More Heroes 3 came out I would say tied with Great Ace Attorney as my GOTY so far.......really fun game!

Haven't played too many games this year so RE8 wins sorta by default. However I think chances are I'd be giving it to it anyway. Thought it was a masterpiece.

Bowser's Fury was also pretty excellent and feels like it could be the future of Mario, but it was a pretty bite sized game.

Hitman looks solid and I really wanna get it, just haven't gotten a chance.

And Metroid Dread may run away with it in the end.

Out of that list, I've only played RE Village, R&C Rift Apart, Returnal and It Takes Two.

I rage quitted Returnal after many hours of dying, I can't do it and my game time is precious these days but it is a phenomenal game lol

I did really like RE Village but the most fun would be between Rift Apart and It Takes Two.. My partner who does not play games has enjoyed It Takes Two immensely and been so good to game together.

I'm a go with It Takes Two!

Now that I have played a good chunk of Psychonauts, it is way ahead of anything else this year. It sucks you in and is fun.

Bowser's Fury was great but not enough content to outdo Psychonauts' charm. Ratchet was good too. I am doubtful any game coming out later this year will do better than these games, but I am super excited for Metroid regardless. I hope something that isn't on my radar pops up during the holidays. I am not a Halo person largely because I hated FPS games on consoles when the first 2 came out and am just not willing to jump in without playing the old games nor am I interested in playing that many older games just to get caught up.

Returnal is an 8 outta 10 game at best.

It Takes Two is a 9 outta 10 game. (No such thing as a perfect 10 in my books but this is the closest this year)
Psychonauts 2 a 9 outta 10 game.
Mario 3D + another 9 outta 10 game
Monster Hunter Rise more 9s.
Deaths Door....sleeper hit of the year an easy 9 outta 10 game.

Returnal has no chance of winning GOTY cept for the fact SonyGAF out numbers GamerGAF.
If Returnal even gets nominated for a GOTY at any reputable awards show ill be surprised.

My GOTY so far, it surpassed RE Village.

Halo Infinite got potential but lack of campaign gameplay is becoming a red flag IMHO

Still think Shin Megami Tensei V or Metroid Dread gonna take top spot.......

Psychonauts 2 Was a total joy to play. Next is The Ascent.

Rift apart doesn't even have an OT thread on Neogaf suggesting no one cared enough about the game to talk about it.
edit. I've been told there was a ot thread of rift apart. Huh. I still want to play it though I already watched an entire let's play first.

We are actually seeing less OT in GAF because people here barely want to talk about actual games, they either want to talk about graphics or shit happens in gaming industry. So far those are the topics most popular.

Lol @ returnal...

Psychonauts 2 all the way, if wasn't for it, maybe ratchet
LOL @ Psychonauts 2 (see what I did there, it pissed on your choice as well)

OT: I haven't played it, but I hear nothing but good things about Psychonauts 2. That might be Xbox's GOTY, but HALO says Hi! Acknowledging a game from the "enemy" console doesn't devalue your piece of plastic or your game.
OTOT: It's Returnal for me. Gameplay was great, super responsive, fast paced, challenging and rewarding. Story was weird, scary, and left a lot to the imagination. I put maybe 60 or more hours into that game.

I bet that Keighley's commercial shitshow will nominate it and also Demons Souls.

This displeases me greatly.

Hahaha just kidding.
Just checked their other nominees:

  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout – Mediatonic, Epic Games
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Insomniac Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Returnal – Housemarque, Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure - Sumo Sheffield, Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope - Supermassive Games, Bandai Namco
  • The Last Campfire - Hello Games
Hahaha yeah okay....and we are supposed to take these guys (never heard of them) seriously?

P.S:

  • Entry to the Develop:Star Awards is open to any companies working in the game dev industry with teams based in the UK, or Europe if they have a strong connection to the UK (e.g. a UK-based publisher or strong UK sales).
  • You can enter yourself or your own organisation, or you can nominate a third party.
  • Entries must be submitted via our online entry form. Any entries submitted via any other medium will not be considered.
  • When reviewing entries for the shortlist, judges will only use the information provided by you on the submission form within the deadline period.
  • To give yourself or whoever you are nominating the best possible chance, please follow our criteria instructions on the form carefully and provide your information exactly as requested – this will help provide the judges with entries of a consistent standard and make it a fairer judging process.
  • Entry for the Develop:Star Awards closes on Friday 2 July 2021.

So only European games can enter, and the close of period was May 2021?

None of these when elden ring and dying light 2 comes out in december.

I liked returnal and ratchet and many indies but they are not goty material personally.

If It Takes Two doesn't get any nominations with any of these publications that will just be another proof they are nothing

Psychonauts 2 for me, got the 1000gs too!
Even my partner put 30hours into the game and got the 1000gs too.

Deaths Door & Hitman 3 were excellent games too!
