Changed my vote from Ratchet to Psychonauts after finally playing it. Great game! Still think it will be beaten for me personally by both Halo and FH5 though by the end of the year…

Really hoping it's going to end up being Deathloop.

So far, probably Ratchet. Although it's very forgettable. Returnal is seriously overrated.

Disappointed with this year so far.

The Ascent for me so far. Easily.

But Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous and Psychonauts 2 could creep up there for me as well, having just started on both.

Death's Door great, as well.

MH:Rise, but overall it's been a bad year. I'm not sure what it is about Rise, it just doesn't keep pulling me in like World did, despite the actual gameplay and monster variety being more fun. I'd be lying if I said that the performance on the Switch is an issue, but I don't think that's the main reason. Who knows.

Anyways, I liked Village too. Capcom is the only company coming through for me this year. This list did remind me that I still need to play Ender Lilies though, that game has potential.

Cyberpunk 2077

Not everyone played the game on 8 years old consoles tho.

I voted for MHR but that's the only game from this list I've played so far. Waiting on sales for some of the other games.

I voted R&C because I love the franchise, has a special place in my heart and I really enjoyed playing it.... was a little short for my taste though.

However.... if we are talking about awards..... Returnal is going to decimate all of those games. I have not played it yet but it is just the type of game that wins awards, you can tell. There are already signs of it pulling away from the crowd.

I've managed to stay in the dark on Returnal.
I have a Love Love relationship with Housemarque and want to experience the game blind. Just wish it was playable on the PS4.

Returnal is an 8 outta 10 game at best.

It Takes Two is a 9 outta 10 game. (No such thing as a perfect 10 in my books but this is the closest this year)
Psychonauts 2 a 9 outta 10 game.
Mario 3D + another 9 outta 10 game
Monster Hunter Rise more 9s.
Deaths Door....sleeper hit of the year an easy 9 outta 10 game.

Returnal has no chance of winning GOTY cept for the fact SonyGAF out numbers GamerGAF.
If Returnal even gets nominated for a GOTY at any reputable awards show ill be surprised.
Dam u gona be salty af at the end of the year 😂

If we are talking in terms of critics.

Psychonauts 2 then Returnal, I think Deathloop also has a chance based off the current previews.

Makes no difference whatsoever, even with 3090, the gameplay sucks
It doesn't suck, it's just shitty balanced, shooting and hacking were perfectly ok (sure, not great either), not a great racing games guy so i can't really speak for the driving aspect.

And on pc you have 60 frames, far better graphics and less bugs so the game was vastly more enjoyable, for me it was more enjoyable than any modern fallout\skyrim or ac games\watch dogs if we just talk about open world games.

Characters, quest, plot, writing, rpg aspects and art design were good\great enough to not call the game a turd, at least on pc, and i have a filthy 2070super with a 8600k...

I don't know how bad was your experience, but mine (around 80 hours) was far better and less buggy than many other games.

I managed to put 100+ hours on PS5, did most of the side quests etc. The game has the worst AI ever seen in an open world game, the AI is soulless, the city looks great, but the disappearing NPCs, clueless AI ruins the experience... didn't really care about all the glitches, crashes or bugs, what kills the game is the braindead AI and NPC's. Also, most of the decisions you make in the game do not make any difference whatsoever. Also, don't get me started on the driving missions, as they are one of the worst ever created... all in all, an average game, 6/10, nothing special.

Two platformers in first two places. This is one shitty year.

(I am playing Psychonauts 2 right now and it is great, but still)

I voted Hitman 3. Looking forward to Dying Light 2, Deathloop, Halo Infinite, Far Cry 6 and Diablo 2 Remake.

There is a total lack of first/third person RPGs this year.

Nothing of what you say is false, but how many games we have with slightly better but still braindead ia in these modern days?! The majority...
The ia during the face to face shooting was really not more braindead than a lot of fps tbh, during stealth and noc ia was hilariously bad, yeah.

I love good ia, but we are kinda used...tsushima is considered a goty in here and the ia during stealth is fucking terrible, and they are not much better during sword combat...botw is considered gotg and you have enemies running towards granades trying to kick them away instead of running away with disastrous results 99% of times, i mean, yeah...

I only had one run so i'm not aware about the choice not having weight, for what i played i didn't had this impression at all, i even want to do a second run with completely different choices because i'm very curious to see the differences, and i barely replay games a second time, especially 100 hours long game.

For me it was a 7\7,5 with gigantic margins of improvements, but i can perfectly see cyberpunk genre super fanboys scoring the game much higher, exactly like samurai movie fanboys score tsushima more than a 7.

Thats actually the beef i have with a lot of the criticism i see towards cyberpunk. Game definitely isn't perfect but a lot of its problems like dumb AI, poor balacing or even the bugs are also present in loads of other highly praised games, often to much worse degrees.

As you said, i'll definitely score it higher than others in my book simply because i prefer cyberpunk settings to medieval or post-apocalyptic ones, and this is the first fully open world cyberpunk RPG out there so theres that.

I think Rachet got it this time

Rachet > Returnal for me

Metacritic also shows Rachet >Returnal

The remaining game of the year ? Far Cry 6? Deathloop? BF 2042? Not sure...Halo Infinite are out...

Rachet will win goty on vga and numerous gaming website watch this space

I missed the vote but Returnal got in my head and I loved it. It would get my vote. It stood out in so many ways. That said, I did delete it within a minute of getting the platinum. I had to escape the cycle.

I changed my mind from Returnal, which is awesome, to Flight Sim, which is amazing. Im assuming Forza Horizon 5 will top it.

So far? Probably Psychonauts 2. If you haven't played it yet, you're missing out on one of the best games released in recent years. RE8 would be a distant second.

As for the rest, i haven't played some of them (like Rise), and will not count 3D World because Bowser's Fury is an expansion. A lot of them are good video games, but they're not even worth considering for GOTY. They're filler, forgettable for the most part and nothing worth mentioning in a year or two.

I think that the best games of the year are yet to come, and i think that if Psychonauts 2 doesn't win GOTY then one of these will:

Age of Empires IV
Shin Megami Tensei V
Diablo 2: Resurrected
Halo Infinite

Metroid Dread ... i don't know. Based on those two trailers the texture quality on the models is so God damn low that it simply obliterates whatever artstyle the developers wanted the game to have. Visual feedback on what you're playing is important. But like i said, i don't know. Maybe it'll look good wen the product is released. If the texture quality isn't as horrible as in the trailers, then it's a solid contender for GOTY.

Overall a decent year.

Psychonauts 2 for me so far, pretty easily too

Returnal is really good too - but the rogue-like elements are not great

It definitely will win my personal GOTY but in actual GOTY shows it wont, because it not popular enough. Unfortunately GOTY shows mostly are popularity contests.

Who?

P.S These were the only games nominated
  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout – Mediatonic, Epic Games
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Insomniac Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Returnal – Housemarque, Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure - Sumo Sheffield, Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope - Supermassive Games, Bandai Namco
  • The Last Campfire - Hello Games

My top 5:

5. The Ascent
4. MS flight sim - Oof just for the scale and the awe it gave me on just a series S.
3. Hades
2. Returnal (would have been 1 If not for the minor inconveniences)
1. Village ( The only mainstream AAA game done right this year.)

People complain that everything has been delayed, but I have already played multiple games that are GOTY potential for me and Halo Infinite is the last big game to come out besides Battlefield 2042 but I don't think BF 2042 has a chance at GOTY to be fair.

So far...

Returnal - Fantastic new IP with addicting gameplay and unique setting really enjoyed this game
Psychonauts 2 - Feels like an old-school original Xbox game from the 2001-2005 era but with better visuals, awesome dialogue, characters and just fun at all times and creative ideas
Guardians of the Galaxy - Every single character in this game is just perfectly acted out, dialogue is one of the best I've experienced in the last few years, great visuals for a cross-gen game and just a fun game overall and very funny
Forza Horizon 5 - Haven't played this yet, but if Metacritic is too anything to go by, then this is another obvious choice but the issue is that it's a racing game and sadly racing games do not appeal to mainstream audience really, but for me i am sure it be in my top 5 of this year. Will be playing it once it unlocks for me tonight and I have 100% in Forza Horizon 4 so that should tell you enough of how much I love good arcade racers.

Last but not least....

Halo Infinite - Amazing multiplayer of what I have played so far from technical previews, campaign seems to have massive improvements, but I cannot pass my final judgement until I have fully experienced this game at its full capacity.

So too...those who say this year sucked for gaming...well.. you are wrong, lol. I barely have time to juggle any of these titles let alone my backlog. I am loving it right now!

What are you happy with the most so far this year personally?
