Game series you think need to die?

Seems to me series tend to come to their natural end on their own. When the games truly start to stuck, people stop buying.. and they stop being made.

There's a lot of great series in this thread being named that just boggle me.

If I'm going to post games that aren't just trolling/flamebait:

- Tony Hawk

- Sonic. It PAINS me to say this because Sonic made me a Segabot but Sega have proven far too many times they can't resurrect him. If they can hand him to someone else, then MAYBE, but the longer Sega (or Dimps) continues to make Sonic games, he needs to be put to sleep.

- Call of Duty. The game has been declining after reaching the pinnacle with CoD4. Had it been getting better or at least maintaining a certain quality level, I'd say leave it, but in all honesty, it needs to die, even though it never will.

- Cabela's. Do these really sell? Honestly?

Most others can be saved, or deserve saving.

Are people really posting God of War? With a straight face?

Also, to those saying "Each new version is basically the same game". Dumbest fucking argument ever. Every game ever with sequels is the same game each time with slight tweaks.

I doub tthere'd even be a handful of games with sequels where the sequel is not only a COMPLETELY different game, but a quality different game.

Metroid is the only one I can think of.

Now if only RB will follow in their footsteps. RB3/Beatles/Green Day bombed hard enough that I'm surprised it's not dead.

But Rock Band is already dead, unless you like Fall Out Boy and novelty songs.

None. It's much sadder when a series dies completely than having the remote chance that it could be given to a team that makes a great game and breathe new life into the franchise.

Basically any franchise that has gone beyond three games and is still repacking the same shit or series that has their main story ark completed yet the developer is still milking it.

nintendo Is probably the worst for it. They really need to reboot a lot of their franchises.
Can't wait for Mario to be retooled into a post-apocalyptic first person shooter.

The game is getting a re-released for 360 by MadCatz this holidays so...

That's not the only option. SMG is the quintessential example of doing it right. SSBB and Mario Kart Wii are the opposite.

If Nintento keeps piling on SMG 3-8 with minor rehashes, that will sorta douse the ardor for the series, yes.

God of War, no pleasant way to say it, but I'd like real action games back. GoW's influence on the genre has created a similar effect to COD on Shooters. More cinematic gameplay, less focus on depth and content. Major publishers are attempting to imitate it or down right copy its style in favor of trying to do something original.

i broke out laughing at this. i wish i had written that.

somebody actually suggested that 'mario' needs to die? haha. get real. that too must have been a joke, i guess.

too tough to tell jokes from reality in dumb threads like this. and dumb threads like this pop up a lot.

What are racing and fighting game franchises that does iteration right that MK and SSB could learn from?

I agree that Galaxy is the kind of huge, amazing upgrade we should want, though I wouldn't mind a tick/tock schedule where Nintendo establishes a new premise, elaborates on it, then establishes a new one.

MK Wii and SSBB both featured quite a few changes, even if they weren't subject to the same kind of fundamental shakeup as Galaxy. It's less than ideal, but a minor sin compared to what similarly celebrated series have gotten away with.

I think it's a bit of a stretch saying God of War influenced the genre, as much as CoD did. Apart from film tie-in hack jobs, how many GoW clones are out there?

Dante's Inferno, Knights Contract, Splatterhouse, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow in combat, Darksiders kinda, Enslaved kinda, and Garshasp (:lol) in addition to a bunch that I'm forgetting.

Capcom needs to put Resident Evil on hold for a few years. Their just flooding the market with half assed remakes and spinoffs. They should use that time to reintroduce one of their other great franchises.

Essentially you want the Fighting genre to end at Street Fighter II, the driving genre to end at OutRun, FPS to end at Doom II, 3D Action games to end at Majora's Mask, etc etc etc. Good thing there are people who actually like videogames for more than their novelty and little story "arks" exist(and were in the majority in the 90s).

Sonic is a successful series for Sega and has a fanbase. Resurrection not necessary apparently. (Take this from someone who thinks Sonic has been a "cinematic" flash/no substance series since day one.)

- Call of Duty. The game has been declining after reaching the pinnacle with CoD4.

The series has more (new and returning) fans than ever and is selling faster than any other kind of entertainment(at $60). Of course now would be the perfect time to kill it!

The "cinematic" approach is everywhere in the western game design, there is no reason to blame God of War really.

Call of Duty - 10 years and series has made barely any advances beyond the visuals. Hell it's still running on a modified version of the quake 3 engine.
Medal of Honor - Call of Duty's slobbering half retarded brother can get fucked too.
Sonic the Hedgehog - Good. God. Let it die.

I could've sworn everybody liked Sonic Colors.

It was actually pretty good/decent. Generations seems to be on the same path...and honestly if a few key titles werent released, then I dont think the series would be in the state that its in/road to redemption it needs to travel.

Then again, we probably would've have had a game like Colors or Generations.

I'd like to see them reintro Onimusha with today's technology, but push it further towards survival horror.

i work in a game store, and sadly yes, there are that many imagine games haha

None. A new iteration in a series doesn't negate its predecessors, nor does it bring their quality down. I don't understand the whole "it sullies the name of my favorite brand" mentality.

and in regards to the OP: I think Katamari Forever is perhaps the best entry in the Katamari series.

why do people keep saying gears of war? the first one launched in 2006. so in the 5 years that followed, epic has released 2 other gears games. 2 games in 5 years. that seems pretty reasonable to me.

I thought they already pull the plug in Tony Hawk for a while? Same with Guitar Hero and music games in general.

Personally, I never cared for the Resident Evil series nor any of its many sequels, spin offs, and remakes.

I imagine it's something to the effect of:

Also, probably something involving the "dudebro" audience and how they deserve to have all their favorite series be canceled because they're not TRUE GAMERS.

I'd agree with you Orayn if you didn't feel Virtua Fighter needed to be euthanized because you don't have access to a Japanese arcade :)

No no no no no, I was just saying that the series had been pretty quiet in the West for some time, and that "killing" in the sense of preventing future sequels would be unnecessary.

None. Every series has it's fans. And by saying a series needs to die, you are being very rude and mean to those fans.

No one said someone needs to go back in time and prevent the 2 sequels from being made, just that after this third game the series needs to die. And the reason is simple, it's another game that's made no changes since the first iteration. When a games biggest change is the number after it's title that's a sign it needs to go.

Homefront. No idea why it's getting a sequel, from the Crysis team, of all places.

This.

And I don't see why Sonic should die just now that we're having some good games.

On the other hand, series to be paused for like 8-10 years... yeah sonic could go now and come back later. In the meanwhile I'll take some Alex Kidd, Shenmue, Pikmin, F-Zero, 1080, Starfox.. you can have everything you want for a while.

Well the fans of "Slavery: The Game" need to die :|
I... think?

God of War - This once fun (but shallow) series has quickly become Kratos' yearly cash in. I think we're up to 5 very similar games in 6 years now, not counting ports and collections.

Sonic - The games may be profitable, but the quality control died a long time ago. Needs an extended vacation and then a return with a phyisics engine that mirrors the classic games as closely as possible. All shitty friends (i.e. everyone who isn't Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik) must be purged. The game can be either a Megaman 9 style reboot with retro visuals, or a 2D sprite based platformer in HD graphics. No 3D can be used at any point in a new HD game, as Sega has proven over and over again that Sonic and 3D do not mix well. This includes any attempts to go cheap and make 3D backgrounds in a 2D game.

CoD - Profitable I'm sure, but look how quickly people got burned out of the series. Now there are tons of FPS games that play just like CoD4:MW.

Assassin's Creed - The series died the second they introduced the futuristic angle, IMO, a worse sin than the boring and repetitive game play. Reboot it and don't fuck it up this time.

Prince of Persia - PoP 2008 would have been one of the best games ever if it didn't play like shit. The ending is my favorite of this generation, and the artstyle and music are incredible. Why PoP2008 was not used as a template going forward with game play improvements, I have no idea. Instead we get more soulless adventures with a pissy emo Prince. Fuck it, reboot it yet again and start over.

Game series' shouldn't be killed off.
If anything they should be reinvented.

Assassin's Creed - The series died the second they introduced the futuristic angle, IMO, a worse sin than the boring and repetitive game play. Reboot it and don't fuck it up this time.
Wait, so in your eyes the series died even BEFORE it was released? What?

EDIT: I take it back that game series' shouldn't be killed off. Because the imagine somethingz series should not only be killed, it should be burned and the proof of their existence should be destroyed AND be shot into space so that no one ever knew it existed.

Call of Duty - They need to do a major overhaul of the game to get me to buy another one. No way am I going to play MW3 knowing people are just going to camp to get Killstreaks. Perhaps take them out and the action would get going.

Halo - Not stop making but take a break. It's going to be almost 5 releases in 3 years. It's getting out of hand.

Homefront - Why are they even bothering to make a sequel?

Need for Speed Shift - I don't know if they will ever make another one but I wouldn't buy it. Controls so bad it's not even funny.
