Game Theory: Wii U is the New Virtual Boy

I wouldn't come down on him too hard.

The Wii U is only the second worst disaster in Nintendo's history. Splitting hairs at that point, really.

So the Xbox 360 and or the PS3 are more high definition than the Wii U?

The video seems more focused on entertainment than accuracy.

What about their love hotels? :-P

What about them? Imagine the potential it would have today.

I love his videos, but this one seems a bit forced. Like he was trying a bit too hard to make the VB and Wii U similar by pointing out some of the obvious similarities while leaving out some of the ones that show the Wii U in a better light.

I agree with this. Well, except I don't really love his videos, I'm kinda meh on them but I see what he's going for usually. There are similarities, and I'm sure he realizes the differences that others have pointed out ITT, but he's likely purposely ignoring them and emphasizing other things to fit his vision.

As a gaming product it was pretty cool actually... It enveloped you in a cool stereoscopic 3D world, really cool stereo sound chip (like a Game Boy on steroids). It's really fun to play around with one now.

As a marketable product, yes, it was horrible.

It was pretty cool, I think the only bad thing was

1. It was too big and uncomfortable to use. I had one and I remember we had to lay on the floor, prop a pillow under our heads and then set the device on our face.
2. Red only
3. Eye strain

Really, if it had been lighter and easy to attach to your head, it would have been way better.

Virtual Boy failed because it was impractical, gimmicky, and had no games.
Two out of three ain't bad?

edit

Phew, I made it through. Dude sounds like somebody trying to sell something on an infomercial ugh. I was curious what made you think others hadn't watched it?

It was the knee jerk early reactions, plus the fact that they responded quicker than they could have seen the video.

Well, in my case, a friend forwarded this to me around four days ago. I just think the video in general is more of him trying to make connections between the both than actually pointing out the flaws. Some of the things he says are quite repulsive as well.

Game Theory's argument in a nutshell, if you don't want to watch the video:

That is silly.
-Competition from the better performance PS3, xbox 360, PS4, and Xbone all really hurt the WiiU whereas VirtualBoy had no direct competition since no one else was willing to make such a silly gimmicky product.

Totally contrived comparison. The Wii U has issues, but I don't think the controller having bad battery life or a Virtual Boy-esque game library are anywhere near the top of the list.

You guys didn't watch the video, huh?

Then I think they made the best choice.. Holy shit that guy's voice shtick is annoying. It wouldn't be so bad if he actually said something funny, but he doesn't.
The analogy itself was just OK, didn't really strike me as notably interesting to be honest

I think the main reason the wii u failed is because nobody new what it was and the lack of games, third party support.

Every kid wanted it and every parent said no

I was entertained by the video, you guys are way overanalyzing his content. Of course the Wii U isn't the new virtual boy, it doesn't even perform the same function (i mean yes they both play games, but one is focused entirely on VR while being portable (heh) while the other tried to introduce asymmetric gameplay to the home console). The only thing they truly have in common is that they both have sold poorly in relation to what Nintendo probably hoped.

Kinda funny how the NGage and the Virtual Boy were just right ideas in the wrong time.

Ngage predates the cellphone gaming boom by a few years and the Virtual Boy is the grandparent to the Oculos Rift and the Project Morpheus
... which makes it even more hilarious to see this thread today.

Also the video is bullshit. Not even the Ngage is in Virtual Boy levels =P

I wonder if Nintendo has any patent about 'wearable 3D headset' cause of the Virtual Boy given the super rise of similar (but way better execution of course) products now it kind of made me wonder if they did.

Would nintendo dream of reviving a Virtual Boy like project in the future if Occulus Rift and Sony's VR tech take off?...All this makes me miss Gunpei Yokoi.

In many ways they've been doing pseudo VR for a number of years. The Wii remote was designed to bring you into the games,as was the 3D in the 3DS.

If you look at some of the early stuff with the Wii U gamepad being held or attached to a Zapper to look around you in an FPS...the panoramic view videos on Wii U that you move the gamepad to look around....that essentially the same as VR in principle. Sadly Nintendo never really followed through with the things they initially showed.

He doesn't give enough shit to Nintendo for their own lack of creativity. He bashes third-parties for not taking a risk and making a super innovative game for the GamePad. He even goes as far to claim that they're not in this for the art.

Where's Nintendo's super innovative game for the GamePad? Maybe the GamePad just doesn't bring anything new that we haven't seen since the original DS? And has he taken a look at Nintendo's line-up? All direct sequels and minigame collections. They're hardly in this for the art.

Wii U is not a console I wish to own (unless it gets a new F-Zero someday...).

But it's no Virtual Boy.

I owned a Virtual Boy. Got it new for $20 in a bargain bin many years ago. It was crap. Interesting crap for $20, but crap. Wii U isn't crap, but it has its own very different challenges.

The thing is, the VB was so starved for games that Nintendo had to make a game based off of the comics ran in their American advertising magazine.

At least Wii U doesn't have Non-Specific Action Figure's Funky Bowling.

As a Wii U owner I've had trouble justifying this to myself.

Wii Fit U is the only reason I turn the console on, thanks to the pedometer.

It's not that far fetched to call it the new Virtual Boy.

3rd parties are gone.

1st party games don't take full advantage of the tablet capabilities and are too and far between releases.

The thing is a major disaster.

I'm only holding on to mine because of "X" but I'm starting to have my doubts of its release.

The hell did I just see?

lol

edit: And why did he call the PS360 "more high definition systems"? haha

Starting off his argument with why both systems failed with bad battery life is a red flag. My coworker who hasn't heard of the WiiU has no idea of the things battery life. The core market that hasn't adopted the system hasn't rejected the thing because of its battery life. A lot of the other points are valid, but the comparison feels somewhat forced. Lack of a compelling launch lineup and third party games in general has nothing to do with the Virtual Boy but is a long running Nintendo issue.

Nah. The virtual boy failed because it was VR. It was a niche and it will stay a niche. And yes, i really like the oculus and morpheus. But it´s not something you can sell to the masses.
