GameMaker Studio Standard Edition is free for a limited time

Awesome, thanks. Definitely not familiar with any of this so I'd be going in fresh, but I doubt I would be exporting to mobile or anything else for a WHILE so I guess the $50 upgrade fee at a later time wouldn't be bad (or possibly even catch it in a similar sale).

Deal ends March 2nd, so that gives you some time to try it out and decide. That's what I think I'll be doing. This is very awesome, tyvm OP.

Unity is 1000% more flexible but I think it's so much easier to get a prototype up and running in GM.

4.3 is pretty simple for making 2D games. Maybe I'm trying to do more "advanced" things (or I have too much experience with C and C++), but Unity is so much easier for me. Either way, not a bad way to make a 2D game.

Oh shit! I fucked with the free version a bit and have been meaning to go back, so this came at a perfect time. Thanks for the headsup OP!

Is the documentation/support better for Unity? I've been fiddling around with GML in Gamemaker Studio and I'm finding when I'm searching for answers I run into a lot of old posts. GM 8.1 was deprecated and isn't compatible with Studio.

We should all just do a "GAF makes videogames" thingy where we all try and make something just for fun. Could be both really cool and really interesting.

Unity is used a lot more
I think?
, so it has pretty decent documentation from what I've seen. I usually just Google question and get what I'm looking for. I haven't used GameMaker that much in about a year so I dunno how it compares to the documentation anymore.

This is some serious serendipity though... I was just thinking of a simple idea for a game I wanted to make, so I was doing codecademy again, and then this plops into my lap. You've just wasted hours of my life OP (in a good way) thanks for the tip OP.

That's cool to hear. I've really only used Unity as one dude on a bigger team, so it was kind of overwhelming trying to sift through the project to figure my stuff out. Definitely something I've been meaning to get back to.

For GM documentation, this is a good place:

Some pretty decent games were made with Game Maker, Hotline Miami and Nidhogg among others. I might have to give this a shot. I'm pretty much an idiot when it comes to programming, but I've made some popular stuff in the LittleBigPlanet series. Maybe I'll have good luck with this?

If you want to mess around with it or release some free stuff? Nah. If you're planning to make something that's available to buy? Yeah, just for texture management.
$35 is a good deal. I think I'll jump on it. I wanna make a shmup. Or at least try :(

Yep. Opened it up...have no idea what I am doing. Going to have to find a tutorial for this or something. Looks complex.

I teach my 6th Grade Students GameMaker! We use GameStar Mechanic first, it teaches them a bit about coding/programming language, as well as techniques to creating, editing and fixing games. It is FREE, online, but probably way below the intelligence of GAFFERS.

Then we roll into GameMaker. I start them off with Tutorial 1 or the basic tutorial that comes with it. I think you have to dodge fruit or something like that. My whole point is, it is overwhelming when you open it up, but start with the basic tutorial, then go from there.

There are hundreds of tutorials and stuff out there online. Youtube videos are the best cause people will walk you through what to do to create a game. Create someone elses idea, then try to recreate your own similar game, with different sprites and stuff. And yes, GameMaker comes with a sprite creator.

Yeah I did this as well. The $35 thing, not the schmup thing. I've spent more on games I only played for 30 minutes before giving up on... so can't be too much more wasteful than that <_<

It is actually pretty decent software. I have the Master Collection and use it quite frequently. It is great prototyping software being able to export to pretty much any platform with minimal changes (ios / android have a few things that have to be handled a little differently).

HTML5 Game Development with GameMaker by Jason Lee Elliott is a decent book if you are wanting to get your feet wet with the software and scripting language. It does focus on the HTML5 portion of things but it pretty much all carries over to the various modules.

There are also a ton of demos / tutorials included and the forums are quite active with people posting tutorials.

Is this extended to the Mac version?

I think the Mac version of Game Maker has been discontinued. That was based on really old Game Maker engine tech (GM 7 or even 6 I think) and I think the export function no longer works in Mavericks.

There is a Mac version coming down the line for GM Studio.

So, what exactly can i do with this, as a total beginner. Downloaded it because why not?
Guess i'll try it tomorrow.

You can make 2D games from simple to fairly complex (see hotline miami since it was made in it). The standard version is for windows/8/mac. The Pro version can have upgrades that let you export to Android/iOS/etc.

Hmm. Have ideas right away. Guess i'll blunder into it and see if i can make something.

The program installed fine, but it will not open. "Gamemaker.exe" flashes up in Task Manager for about half a second before vanishing again. This happened to me last time too, I don't know what's happening. halp pls.

I think there's a license check upon first starting, so the servers are probably getting hammered.

I think if you go offline and boot it up it should work fine.
