Gamer: Nintendo's gem in Game and Wario

Gamer - A mini game in Nintendo's latest Wii U release, Game and Wario. It utilizes both the gamepad and the TV simultaneously. Basically, it's about a young kid staying up late to play videogames in bed without getting caught by his watchful mother. You do the primary playing on the gamepad, which is a version of Wario Ware. On the TV, it shows your room, and you must constantly keep an eye on it, for your mother could pop up at any moment. You get four or so lives in the actual Wario game, but if mom catches you playing, it's an automatic game over. You avoid being caught by pulling the ZL and ZR buttons to cover yourself up and pretend to sleep until she goes away. Do that too many times though and you will fall asleep, losing the game you are playing. It creates a great feeling, and is surprisingly creepy to boot. Check out this video to get an idea if I haven't painted the picture correctly. It really is a great utilization of the Gamepad, and has such a nice theme to tie it together.

Honestly, I feel this game is more than strong enough to stand on it's own as an eShop title! Just playing in his room is awesome on it's own, but they could open up more locations in a stand alone release. For instance, he could be in school(with a different set of games), playing below his desk as his instructor teaches the class. Perhaps she calls you to answer a question or just walks by you, forcing you to put it away or get caught and catch an instant game over. I haven't played anything past this in Game and Wario, and everything I played before this one was pretty boring. I'm only on the second stage in Gamer(noticeably harder than the first one), but I want this expanded on. To those that have actually played it, do you feel it has a strong enough base to do so? To those that are watching the youtube clip or read about it, how do you feel it would work out?

Also, this artwork creeps me out as much as the stalking mother does.

Sounds fun, but I'm sure the reviewers played all of the games properly and discovered all the gems like this one to accurately rate it as mediocre.

Yeah, after watching the Giant Bomb quick look it's pretty clear that they should of just scratched everything else* and just made Gamer a full on Wario Ware for the Wii U.

*except for that Miiverse sketch thing. HOT DOG PLANET.

The 9-volt game should be considered as suspense/horror game. I had ton of nerve wrecking fun.

I legitimately was scared by the 3rd level, it's way better to not spoil this game, for sure.
In the 3rd level when
the mom go near you watching you sleep
I was really scared x)

anybody else wonder if Nintendo are testing the water for new franchises/IP with this series?

We already know the origins of a lot of these games--some were initially conceived as built-in software a la Face Raiders 3DS, the others were designed when they switched to a full-on retail release.

You've only gotta play all the games once or twice to work out which ones came before the switch to Wario and which came after--the more Wario-esque games are unambiguously the most stylish and fun.

Lol awesome! Do you get penalized if you cover without the mother looking at you?

You have an energy bar that drains every time you cover when the mother isn't looking at you. If the bar depletes it's game over, but if the mom catches you, it's an automatic game over.

As always, the presentation is amazing. Shame the new warioware is just a mediocre game though, from what I can gather. Way too many minigames, not enough microgames is what I am hearing. The game in OP sure looks awesome.

I loved the dance minigame in smooth moves. So, minigames aren't bad by default. could go both ways.

Ha, no. These things (exceptional stand-alone mini games) have always been part of the series.

If they were testing they we would have had our dedicated Ashley game years ago!

Well, damn. Some of these character designs are worthy of their own game...

edit: Like how about an oldschool RPG starring all the different WarioWare characters in a crazy setting (not your typical fantasy) where special attacks are made up of various minigames you collect along the way like items/weapons.

Is it true that the full, original GBA Wario Ware game is unlockable? I heard that somewhere (can't remember where though).

By the sounds of it, I'd certainly want this more than Denpa, that's for sure.

Wow, this looks pretty intense actually. And it helps that a lot of us here can relate to the tension this game is trying to portray.

Looks like a great concept!

I wish more developers would get behind the Wii U to produce more interesting uses of the Wii U GamePad like this. It seems Nintendo are the only ones with any creativity when it comes to using both the TV and GamePad screen.

Also, that artwork looks astounding. All of the Game & Wario artworks are fantastic.

ZombiU from Ubisoft is the single best application of asymmetric gameplay on Wii U, and I daresay Rayman Legends will do some interesting things in that regard, too.

The game referenced in the OP is essentially the original Wario Ware. I don't think all of the minigames are in, but the premise is basically that you play the microgames from Wario Ware without your mom catching you.

EDIT: To clarify, no, the full original game is not in this game. But you get a very similar experience, especially if you play as 18-volt. (Where you don't have to worry about interruptions.)

I like how 18-volt is just chilling on the porch with his feet up when you play with him. It's like the exact opposite of when you are mortally terrified with 9-volt.

Interesting though, I really can see some of these guys being able to carry their own thing.
Or atleast being in other games, Some not so much though.

Gamer easily could have been the foundation for a Wii U or 3DS Warioware Microgames title.

It might work especially well on 3DS. The screens are so close together that you could probably cycle through microgames much faster, more like an official Microgames title.

I knew I wasn't alone. I'm not sure I'd like it as much on 3ds because of how easy it is to have a full view at all times though. The immersion comes from having to look away in my opinion, and you wouldn't really ever do that with screens so close together.

It would be kinda cool if they used 18-volt as a means of super guide for those that got stuck. It could be like big bro helping you out.

I think I need to wait on this game to drop in price. I wasn't really impressed by the demo at Best Buy. If they drop the price 10-15 I will probably bite. Should have just been a digital.release.

Lol the closeup of the ass. I need to get Smooth Moves.

Part of me thinks Gamer would have been better with a hard mode involving the camera and some sort of facial recognition (having to actually close your eyes), but I absolutely love this game as is.

True on the immersion. And 18-volt as superguide would be hilarious.

This game really has an insane amount of charm even if some of the games aren't great. Just look up videos of the toys to unlock. They are not only incredibly unique but very innovative too.
The gacha are quite something. Some of them have to be seen to be believed. Truly insane and lovely stuff and the reason why it's so hard to let go of the game, even if you played everything to death.

From what I've played so far, this isn't nearly as fun Smooth Moves. I've only made it through about half of the games though, so I can't speak beyond that point. Smooth Moves was surprisingly awesome for the type of game it was.

Wario Games always have an odd set of legs with me. I'll play them, leave them alone, then come back a while later and end up enjoying it even more. Gamer is an instant classic though so far. One of the surprise hits of the year, and a great example of what the gamepad can bring to the table conceptually.

I'll admit, I was on the fence about this title despite the absolute drought of games but your excellent post sold me. Thanks! :)

She gets considerably creepier in the upper levels.

And the game is a joy as a package, not just this one gem. Not every bit is as engaging as every other, but there are more hilarious gameplay ideas and wtf moments in there than you'll find packed into any other single disc/download.

Edit: avoid the reviewers who hate it for what it's not. Stephen Totilo's review is most fair-minded I've seen (and bonus for avoiding nonsensical numerical scores).
