Hey GAF, a random thread idea came to mind. Which games feature rescuing others as part of the gameplay? Megaman X5 and X6 come to mind. Also The Wonderful 101. And The Stretchers for Switch too. What about you, GAF? Which games do you know about that feature rescuing others as part of the gameplay?

Duke Nukem 64 where Nintendo required them to alter the content so not only can babes not be killed, they can be saved.

in this game, which was the very first game by Rocksteady btw!, you often have to save people from burning buildings and as some sort of mini boss battles you will regularly save hostages from their hostage takers, which will result in the bad guy getting killed in brutal and sometimes very cool ways!

WHAT IS A REAL CRIME IS THAT THIS GAME IS NOT YET BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE ON XBOX ONE/SERIES X|S!!!

but now with retroarch I gotta try getting the PS2 version up and running on Series X!

Resogun.

Lego Harry Potter - There are plenty students in peril.

Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey (maybe Valhalla) have outposts with prisoners.

Super Mario

I'm sure there are loads of games with a couple missions where you need to rescue someone at some point, Dying Light, Mass Effect, Halo, Uncharted, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, GTA, you name it, it will probably have at least one rescue mission or sequence.

seems a bunch of people don't understand what "as part of the gameplay" means.

which is not surprising given that nowadays holding the stick forward for 10min qualifies as gameplay

Batman Arkham Knight. I didn’t mind the bat mobile stuff that everyone else hated, but I really didn’t like having to personally drive the hostages back to the police station every time.

Most of the games we play involve us moving sticks and hitting buttons. What's your point? 🤨

That is the standard form of interacting when it comes to video games. It doesn't matter what or how you say it. It simply comes down to moving sticks and hitting buttons.

Yeah, I suppose but you fight to save someone, so you could say that shooting monsters to save someone is part of gameplay.

I disagree, a narrative premise is not gameplay. Your actions are 100% murdering and throwing switches, you never see these people, hear their names, anything.

So I remember one game from 2000s that is called Sheep. You have to escort a flock of sheep to the transport truck.

This way we can also say that Lemmings is a game in which we save them.

Yes how did it take so long for this to be mentioned. The hand holding mechanic was great.

I can hear people arguing SoC as well but again I would argue that saving someone is the narrative premise while the gameplay itself consists entirely of murder and traversal.

Ico you are literally rescuing a damsel in distress the entire game and need to lead her by hand

My number one game were I save people is Burning Rangers. Such an awesome game.

And people cried because Sonic Team was not doing a Sonic game. They were simply making Nights et Burning Rangers, two gems.

Yeah, people are mentioning some random games that rescuing people is not even part of the core gameplay.

Cool thing, every time you rescued a musician, a new instrument would be added to the song below.
