Games that became big because of their sequel

Mega Man 2

Super Metroid

WarCraft 2

Duke Nukem 3D

Doom

never played it but i heard Assassins Creed 2 was better than the first.

In terms of people hunting down and buying the original because the sequel was so good,

Elite Beat Agents made me buy Ouendan

Doom is not a good example. The shareware was the most popular game on the planet earth and phobos.

Street Fighter has to be the best example.

It is.

Also: System Shock 2 and the Witcher 2.

COD4 is an awesome example too. GTA 3 also.

BTW, lol at people posting Megaman 2. Megaman didn't became suddenly famous because of the sequel, the sequel was created because the first one was very well recieved.
Same thing for Demon/Dark Souls

I want to say Streets of Rage but I think it was pretty popular right out the gate. Despite being fucking horrible. SoR2 brought the gameplay chops to go with those phat beats.

i guess turok and duke nukem and maybe doom and quake can fall into the line off the games that got worse as more sequels were made ?

But Street Fighter isn't a niche game compared to those?

Street Fighter is the #1 fighter in popularity for its genre. If you ask John Doe to name you some RPG series he'll probably quote the ones I mentioned plus Mass Effect and Fallout probably.

I'll always remember the first Call of Duty, it was my first game with down-scope. Really captured the great cinematic 5-6 hour campaign "rollercoaster ride" that's become prevalent in games. The series blew up with 4, but this was a great franchise from the beginning.

Killzone 2.
This one is a surprise to me that it sold so many because of the serious lack of quality. I suppose it is a rather large improvement over the first. I'm saddened that Sony is choosing to continue such an underwhelming franchise and as a flagship game even.

Saints Row 2 or 3 maybe

I was about to say this =P

Saints Row 2 was the best (for me at least). The first one was also really good, but buggy, and weird in places.

I heard about the franchise thanks to the third, but I'm not really a fan of the direction they took the series.

The Witcher 2 probably fits this best as well as Uncharted 2. Maybe Dark Souls? But I don't think people who played Demons Souls were like " yeah it was pretty good but had a few flaws so I'm hyped for the next if they can fix A,B, and C". It was more like "OMG THIS GAME IS THE TITS! I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY DARK SOULS!!"

Street Fighter series (because of 2)
Call Of Duty (because of 4)

I don't get why people are listing Assassins Creed. That game was big and popular from the get go before 2 was even mentioned or came in the spotlight.
