Myself, I was able to wipe the last 3 or so levels from my brain and judge the game as though they don't exist.
The anti-climax levels were beyond moronic and completely detached from the rest of the game.

Pokemon Gold/Silver is the correct answer, as someone who lived and breathed the R/B/Y games I was overjoyed once finishing the full game of Gold that OMG I get to go back to the old world now and see how things have changed in that time - I simply LOVE direct continuity in my games and this was like getting 2 games in one.
