Games that keep going, despite what seemed to be the end.

Shenmue II in the best and worst way possible.

That final fight was something epic, and then they twist the "you'll never get Shenmue III knife" pretty hard in the fourth disc.

Pokemon Gold/Silver as someone mentioned before. It was awesome to go back to Kanto 3 years later and battle the old gyms again.

must be something in the water fountains there. tales of symphonia was my selection. i thought that thing was drawing to a close many times.

right on, Heck i knew there was an entire 2nd disc to go, and thought the game was nearly finished.

Metal Gear Solid 3.
You destroy the Shagohod tank, and kill Volgin. And you're expecting a cutscene to come along and wrap things up with a fight again The Boss. But instead you're thrown into both a rail shooter segment and a escort mission. >;\

Yeah. Okami. That just sorta kept going, didn't it. And not in the good way. I would have preferred just having the second half/third part of the game to the horrible first 13 hours. And only one Orochi fight for fuck's sake.

I'm amazed nobody mentioned A Link to the Past yet. Maybe I was oblivious as a kid, but I remember thinking I finally rescued Zelda from the clutches of the evil Agahnim, only to be sucked into a different realm, where another five (?) dungeons awaited me. I was mesmerized at the time. Had no idea a game could last that long.

Crysis for the PC is the best example I've ever played. Had the game ended when the climax took place, I think a lot of people would have had a much better opinion of the game.

Myself, I was able to wipe the last 3 or so levels from my brain and judge the game as though they don't exist.

The anti-climax levels were beyond moronic and completely detached from the rest of the game.

Maybe he means Grandia 1? That was pretty awesome, reaching the end of the world, then realising it's only the halfway point :D

I really thought that would be the end of disc 1 but the game kept going.

What about Final Fantasy.

You start out rescue the Princess from Garland, cross a bridge and get what looks like an ending, then bam, its nowhere close.

Also, to who said Zelda 1, no. The 2nd quest is just like Lunar 2's bonus mode at the end, you don't get it until you beat the game (or name Link Zelda).

I don't get the RE4 picks, there's no way that boss fight was the last boss. :/

Pokemon Gold/Silver is the correct answer, as someone who lived and breathed the R/B/Y games I was overjoyed once finishing the full game of Gold that OMG I get to go back to the old world now and see how things have changed in that time - I simply LOVE direct continuity in my games and this was like getting 2 games in one.

Man that game ruled. <3

WHAT!??!?!?!?!

I guess you mean Far Cry, and yes, it should have ended much sooner.

As for my input, er.... well it's been taken, but Half Life seemed to climax, then we reached Xen, yikes, and Zelda:Lttp was awesome in the complete anti-climax before you reached the alternate world, "Ow you beat me, well, not really, take THIS" *Zap*

Dragon Quest VIII.

It kept going and going and going and going...

Yeah I'm still in the middle of it right now and I thought I'd reached the end for a few times now. It keeps going... but in a good way! I keep visiting new areas, encountering new enemies and it's still interesting for me. It helps that I'm a big fan of the overworld and the game in general. 60 hours in right now, no clear sign of the end. And I don't end. Actually I'm putting it in my top PS2 experiences as of now.

Pisses me off that Game Freak never pulled this again. I mean yeah, there are characters and nods from previous regions (seeing Jasmine in Sunyshore City out of nowhere was nice), but man, G/S spoiled me. I wanna see Johto and Hoenn in the future! :( :( :(

Okami (or course)

Yggdra Union. Really thought the game was over when I really was only halfway through.

Donkey Kong Country, with the fake credits where every developper name is Kong or something. But there was only 5 minutes left after that so that doesn't really count. Was is the first case of fake credits in a game?

Psychonauts comes to mind. I liked the game all the way up to it's ending, and then it started throwing one crappy sequence after another at me, every time making me think it's supposed to finally end.

Super Puzzle Fighter...

I swear I'm about to win... the opponents' box is filled to the brim with blocks.. and then BOOM super quadruple combo.. .BAMM i lose... WTF

does that count?

Yeah, Gold and Silver really felt special, I know they took forever to develop the game and it showed with the amount of stuff they got in there. So amazing.

Seeing stuff like Gary/Blue had now become a Gym leader etc was soooo cool, and that last challenger.... when I got to him I was just like oh my gawd this is BEYOND AWESOME.

One of the best surprises at the end of a game - ever.

No one seems to remember GRANDIA II. Dear god the endgame of that was a drag...seemed like it would never end.
Fuck you, Grandia II! Shit should have ended like four retextured dungeons and three God-killings before it actually did :(

That's because it's the exact opposite. It ended and you wanted it to keep going. Right?

RIGHT?

Snake Eater does drag on and on, but in a totally good way. It begins with Volgin and the chase following, where it feels like you're breaking into an all-out sprint toward the finish line. . .

. . .but it turns out the finish line is miles away. So now you're adrenalized, pushing for the end, but you know there are unresolved story lines and you're wary of how they're going to crop up. And then the sprint breaks and you get saddled with a wounded person and you're even slower, and all the plot starts catching up to you.

It's great, in that the player is pushed to feel like the character they're playing: hunted, desperate, and late to reach the escape.
