Games that shamelessly rip off other games

All kart games not named Mario Kart. But the biggest rip off was the PS Move and its games. What a shameless act that was ripping off the Wiimote/Wii and desperately getting the attention of the casual market!

Wasn't there a Wind Waker clone? I think it got shut down though.

There was Wiki, an MMORPG that uh… didn't have the most original art style.

Here's a video of the game.

And monster Hunter is a clone of PSO.
The gameplay loop of town hub/quest is taken by everything in the genre, but I think calling MH a 'clone' of PSO is a bit of a stretch, unless any game in a given genre other than the first is also a clone. Just to go full circle, I think FF Explorers is closer to PSO than MH is.

Of all the hunting game comparisons, I think Toukiden's take on Monster Hunter is the closest. Not the combat, but the way the village is laid out, and the way the hunting grounds are designed. Even then, I think Toukiden did just enough with it's more fluid, dynasty-warriors-Inspired combat to make the core game stand out.

That Wacky Wheels DOS game always seemed like a Super Mario Kart knockoff to me, tho apparently it has its share of fans

Not sure if this counts because technically they're both developed by the same developer, but Sega's Wonderboy games were basically copied over to the NES after Hudson paid the developer to essentially rebrand the Sega exclusive.

What did Shadow of Mordor rip off? I thought it had that unique nemesis system. I have not yet played it, though.

It's a mix of Assassin's Creed and the Arkham combat system. Though I think it's cool when the devs are not trying to hide it, I think it was the game director who said that he loved the combat system in the Arkham games. It's not really shameless in my book if they give credit where it's due.

Gerstmann's said as much that it was originally going to be a Batman game at some point (or at least in that universe) based on what he knew of the early development.

Saints Row 1 and maybe 2 were definitely shameless clones. The series then started to become its own zany thing with 3.

Maybe stretching: Red Dead Redemption and Gun. One was just done a thousand times better (and years later).

The move was in prototype stage in the ps2 era, but yes, it was a launched as a sad attempt to catch the wii spark.

It's an inferior carbon copy of Crash Bandicoot 3 in every possible way. Not even the graphics were better.

I understand it's a different developer, but can you call it ripping off when it's the same franchise. I think rehash is a better way to describe it.

Not even close. They have completely different core game play structure, take place in completely different settings. They're are similar only in that you play as a player created avatar and can group up with other people, but then you might as well call everything in an entire genre a clone of what came first.

I think it'd be pretty accurate to say that almost every single modern MMO that attempts to take a share of the World of Warcraft pie is a "clone" of World of Warcraft. They might innovate a few new ideas (that almost always fall flat) but nothing ever sticks.

Even FFXIV ARR was basically a "wowification".

I think you mean Dota 2.

Guinsoo created Dota Allstars before creating League of Legends.

Icefrog literally iterated on Dota Allstars before joining Valve to steal Dota, which noone owned, from the community just so they could profit off of it. Items, names, and even the title was carried over. They just removed context from anything related to WC3 and the original title "Defense of the Ancients" while visually being just different enough to quality as a parody.

Nice revisionism.

That's an... interesting take on the history of Dota.

I have a feeling you edit Wikipedia articles on political figures to include such important keywords as "Lizard-men" and "World Domination".

I've never been one to ignore the obvious, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth owes much of its existence to Persona 4.

Though unlike other games, I would not call it shameless. It does enough different to stand out.

Even if he is the creator of the series Capcom owns the Megaman brand. How is this getting by? Do they have a deal with Capcom or something?

It isn't a mega man game. Being obviously inspired by something isn't an argument you can take to court. You can't copyright entire visual styles or gameplay premises. They'd literally have to use the names of mega man characters or copy-paste designs in order to give Capcom something that'd hold up in court.

Hercules on N64 took a lot of notes from Ocarina of Time. I mean you can argue if it's transformative enough, but I felt it was a lot more than simply taking bits and pieces like the targeting system and such.

Also, although not a game (but used in some), the Avatars Microsoft were using on Xbox 360 were just a Mii ripoff.
