Games with shitty controls you still enjoy

Killzone 2 and 3

EDIT: I know some people liked them and many didn't mind but for me 2's were awful and 3.s were just OK. Not trying to start an argument.

Kid Icarus Uprising,
Great game, lots of love put into it. However, being a leftie with big hands on the original 3DS system, it physically hurts me to play it for an extended period of time. I would buy a Wii U version in a heartbeat

I played it on my 3DS and didn't have any problems with the controls, at least until one of the final segments where you had to snipe some explosive charges at the right time. I kept overshooting my aim whenever I tried to correct it, all while a supporting character kept repeating "Now, Snake!" and "We won't make it!". I had to restart that part about four times before I finally managed to get it done.

I've also heard some complaints about Super Mario 64's camera, but I remember being able to get it to behave exactly the way I wanted back when it came out as a kid, even when I was in the middle of doing other stuff, such as long jumps.

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and Zelda:TP.

I hated using the wiimote for anything that didn't involve holding it like a handle without nunchuck.

Also kill zone 2, put a lot of hours into the MP but I always felt I was fighting the controls.

Assassin's Creed series. Main character controls are among the worst I've ever seen. Hope the bad control doesn't invade Watch Dogs too.

Really? I know they can be a little imprecise, what with all the automated free-running and whatnot, but I don't think they're anywhere near the worst character controls in a game. In fact, I've always thought that with a bit of tweaking, they could be among the best.

Heavy Rain
Why can't I just push forward to walk? R2 to walk is beyond dumb.

Because the direction "forward" on the stick changes every time the camera angle changes. If it was stick controls only, you would have to stop each time you walk into a different room/area, or risk walking in the wrong direction.

As for myself, the LittleBigPlanet games, according to a lot of people. I got used to the "floaty" physics based jumping pretty quickly and learned how to utilize it properly. Nothing else is really bad about the controls though.

I don't get the mgs complaints unless you just hate the mechanics. But i haven't played mgs1,2,3 on anything but a dual shock 2/3.

System shock is a good example the addition of mouse aiming helps a lot. I wouldn't replace the hud for anything though.

Yeah, that was certainly weird, although the only time I really hated the controls was when
you're crawling around in that tunnel with the broken glass
and the camera angle keeps changing, making it incredibly difficult to navigate.

Resident Evil: The Thread.

Kid Icarus Uprising was a struggle at first, but I got used to it. My hands still fall asleep after a while, though.

For some reason I always struggled to get to grips with the original clock tower on the SNES port, but I absolutely adore the game and it is still one of the scariest games I've played to this day.

I guess I don't know if I would say the controls are "shitty", but they definitely take some getting used to. Once you figure it out, though, it's SO GOD DAMN FUN!!!

I wouldn't say "shitty' controls, but the learning curve on the controls was much higher than it should've been. Had it not been for this, I'm sure GunValkyrie would've been much more well-received. It was (and still is) awesome.
Agreed with this, got the game over a month ago and man those controls, they are not easy at 1st but you'll get used to them.

I eventually got used to them and the game is GOTY quality but yeah, they're super funky.

I couldn't imagine playing with sticks on this. The game would be so clunky imo. Controls are great.

Also, this is a N64 thread.

Jet Force Gemini's controls are a nightmare to go back to. I love the game and enjoy it still

The OP is playing it on his vita but for some reason he posted the 3DS version pic. The controls are definitely better on the 3DS version.

I think the controls for Just Cause 2 were kind of off. The button config was unintuitive I couldn't always execute exactly what I wanted to. Regardless, I enjoyed the game quite a bit.

Can we stop with these?

[______] thread? [______] thread.

Not so stealthy backseat mod post?

Also agreed on Gun Valkyrie. You really have to fight with the controls in that game at first, but boy is it good once you figure it out.

Skyward Sword

Absolutely hated flying and bomb-throwing, but I loved the game.

whaaa flying was the best! you should grab the controller like the airplane game in wii sports, it was perfect.

My choice is the Alice games. Terrible platformers control wise, but level design and art were outstanding, enough to make me finish both games.

Gravity Rush doesn't let me customize camera controls as much as I would like and suffers for it, but it's so fun that I'm able to work around it.

This game didn't cross my mind till I saw your post.

You are so right though. At first I thought it impossible to play this game because of the weird control scheme. But over time I just got used to it. One of the best games I have ever played

Lost Planet 2

That game had some weird control schemes which took me a while to get used to but man, I know the majority of people didn't like the game with the clunkiness and poor online play support (which I agree on). However it's still up there as one of my favourite coop games to play.

I just found it to be tremendous fun. Even when playing with randomers.

I guess it's mostly because every time the controls go awry, they go awry in a big way. Meaning I'm trying to make a precise jump and Ezio or whoever will jump in the complete other direction, causing me to either die or have to redo all the climbing I just did.

Steambot Chronicles.

Your mech/steambot controls similar to a katamari, but the ai acts like they have the same controls and the rest of the game is incredibly charming and fun, so I can overlook the controls (especially after they click in my mind and I get used to them).

None. Bad controls are a major deal breaker for me.

Pretty much. It seems like most entries in this thread are games with either controls that don't fit into normal expectations, but are fine if you learn them (or/and have an initially vertical learning curve). Controls that are outdated (in the sense that they could be improved with newer input devices) but are fine because the game is still designed around those limitations and games that have a few notable flaws in their controls but a mostly solid core.

I enjoy plenty of games under those categories, but if I considered a game to have outright "shitty" controls I wouldn't enjoy it.

Heavy Rain, the walking in particular felt so awkward initially but the other controls were decent.

MGS1 on Vita was another. In fact, any game that requires using the rear touchpad just ends up annoying me because of the accidentally inputs or lack of input.

That really needs a decent add on that adds the missing triggers and dualshock prongs for Remote Play. I'd pay good money for one.

Vampire Hunter D on psone.

It uses that archaic resident evil moment system from the first couple games but because of the source material I forgave it and ended up really liking it.
