Games with the worst humor

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I'm playing through the Ratchet and Clank remake on my Pro. It looks amazing, and the game play is solid...

But holy shit is the writing bad. I'm imagining it must have been written by someone high up at Insomniac and no one could tell them how absolutely awful their writing is. I can only hope that's the case, as the alternative is that the whole team thought this was funny.

This kind of humor reminds me of that annoying kid you always see hanging out at GameStop who cracks "jokes" all the time using awkward funny voices.

I'm putting this really high up on my scale of "worst humor in a game", not only because it is just downright awful, but also because given the obvious high production value of the game they could have definitely swung the cost of hiring an even slightly competent comedic writer.

What are your picks?

Strange, I thought R&C had a solid sense of humor.

My pick

Borderlands2boxart3.jpg

The fifty percent of jokes that land were hilarious.

The other half? I wanted to rip my ears off.

I haven't played the new R&C game yet, but I have to ask: Is the humor in the game geared more towards a younger audience?

It seems like the kind of game that is made first with a younger crowd in mind, but with gameplay that can be enjoyed by all ages. I could be wrong though.

I think they were writing to a younger audience with that game. As a 30-something, yea, it was flat.

Duke Nukem Forever was cringey. It was fine during its era when I was, what, 12? 13? Thouroughly unfunny now.

I forgot the name but it's an overhead adventure game, you're some kind of knight, real talkative, Prince Charming type of voice. Man how am I drawing a blank, I put in like 25 hours on PS3 in this game. Anyways that is probably the least funny "humorous" modern game I can remember.

Edit: I think it was called Deathspank

This. Game tries too hard.

It wasn't as funny as the older games from what I remember of them.

Gearing it towards kids is no excuse for awful humor and writing.

Saint's Row. Thought Saint's Row 3 was extraordinarily unfunny.

However, I LOVE the humor in Borderlands. Makes me crack up every time!

I definitely thought it was for a younger audience.

Dicktits the thread
Yep, wasn't a fan of Bulletstorms writing

Hyperdimension Neptunia

Sometimes I get a giggle, but fucking hell, they never shut up.
It's like a machine gun of jokes; it fires a lot, and most of them misses.

The new Ratchet was pretty poor in that regard too

Right on, OP. I was lent R&C and just couldn't stand the writing. Felt like it was stuck in the 90s. Maybe if I was 13 years younger I would have dug it, but then I have loved every animated film for kids I've seen this year.

Saints Row 2 was horribly unfunny. It was potty humor with grisly violence, it never had a heart. This is coming from a guy who listens to and loves Howard Stern. 3 was better, as it embraced its satire and became a full comedy in my eyes. For me Conker is the benchmark for comedy games.

Maybe it's the translation, but Japanese games and their humor always seem really forced. Nerd humor in general just doesn't do it for me.

I think Borderlands from Gearbox are some of the most unfunny games, but I think Borderlands from Telltale is one of the funniest games ever made.

I love Bulletstorm's hunor, yeah a lot of it was over the top but the writing itself was pretty solid and that was kind of the point.

This is exactly what came to mind when I read the thread title. Tales from the Borderlands is the standard for what future Borderlands games have to live up to.

Saint's Row The Third.

It did nothing for me. It just felt like the devs threw everything they had at a wall, and hoped that something would stick.

Are you talking about the first game or the series in general? I think the first game was too serious, but I think the second one did a decent job. The other games tried way too hard and it just didn't work well.

100% agree with this. If they got rid of all the memes and referential humour, the game would have been greatly improved. Gearbox needs to learn from Tales from the Borderlands to see what works.

For me, Borderlands is dead, the only thing I care about is Tales from the Borderlands. Not even joking.

Sunset Overdrive.

It had some hits, but it had a lot more misses and they were pretty cringey.

Not gonna say worst humor as I really liked Sunset Overdrive and I thought it's writing was ok, but it definitely had issues. Like there are lines such as "i know how this works. Meet group. Do favours. Become friends" and then proceeds to actually do that. Stuff like that was annoying.
