Indeed, sir! 'Tis a pity that these brilliant first party initiatives are being withheld from all and sundry, leaving third party developers 'twixt a rock and a hard place! What ho, guv!

...it's like I'm talking Swahili here. Jesus.

WHAT?!?!

i still can't believe how many people in this thread don't grasp the concept of universal in game and cross game friend list communication and invites.

seriously, does anyone have links where this stuff was promised by sony, because many people say that it was indeed promised, so there have to be links!

Everyone knows what it is, we are just waiting for it to happen. Some people have patience and not having isn't that big of a deal to me. We all know its coming, and we know it can be done. No harm no foul.

Is it just me or could they have just summed up half of those points by saying they want XBL for PS3. I mean not that's a bad thing, but just saying.

Can you blame them? It took how long for Sony to come up with something half way decent while XBL continues to evolve.. who wouldnt want XBL on their console of choice

I can't believe I missed most of this thread because I was 'working'. I'm shocked. If I read this gamespot article first, and then came to NEOGAF, I'd be very confused. Many people who were hope for SONY to hit a online homerun are seeing home in a fond light. I see home and see a second life like community with spaces and objects and interactivty, and still they haven't fixed the CORE online suite thats needed. That's what the gamespot article is saying. You're giving people who are thirsty, a hat. It's a really nice hat, and when it gets cold its going to be great.. but where is my drink of water?

Some of this stuff I've been waiting for Sony to do since 2002. Patience has its limits. :lol

o/

It's the pay to play that's the dealbreaker for me everything else are nice extra's I'd probably not use often if at all.

Seriously Faceless cross games invites can kiss my @$$. No offense to you or anything, but I just want multi-tasking.

I want to be able to message you while I'm playing Madden 08 and you receive and read the message while you are playing NBA 2K8. Then you respond to my message saying that you will be online in Madden 08 in about 5 minutes.

That's all I want Sony. For right now anyway. I don't (I repeat) I don't need cross game invites. Screw it Sony don't even waste your programming time.

Again I'll say it again (for the 80th time). Sony has already said to the press that these core features are coming soon. Gamespot just doesn't know it yet. I know it. And a few other PS3 owners know it, but Gamespot (one of the biggest videogame websites in the world) doesn't know it.

And did you see Bish's hint?

In game messaging as well as XMB background downloading is very likely coming next week.

Regarding universal invites or sending a specific group of people into a specific game this is all I got so far:
Q: Can you enter, say, MotorStorm™ quickly through Home without
having to travel to the specific MotorStorm™ lobby?
Currently, users can find each other in Home, and then arrange to go off and
play MotorStorm™ at the same time. Eventually, users will be able to meet in
Home and seamlessly launch into a game of MotorStorm™. Similarly, users
will be able to exit to Home directly from the game.

There were some more in some recent Phil Harrison interviews as well.

Edit: In the 1up interview Phil sais you will be able to set up a multiplayer game in Home for you and friends to go to. Doesn't really go into more detail than that.

I don't think that's what they are trying to say Wollan. :|

I thought we were talking about a universal invite system?

i still can't believe how many people in this thread don't grasp the concept of universal in game and cross game friend list communication and invites.

So.. universal in game messaging (communication) is most likely coming next week. Not voice though I believe. But at least one universal form of communication will be there (+ friendslist).

Now, if what Phil sais is correct, about them working on being able to set specific multiplayer games from Home, that would mean invite is on it's way as well since those functions pretty much share technologies. Also, the Home FAQ mentions that there will be certain TRC's regarding matchmaking that needs to be implemented so we will see how that turns out.

This is the first thing that I can find.

On the same day as playstation 3’s euro launch SCE are to distribute there march firmware update with features including:

multi-tasking (included will be audio/video conferencing while browsing the xmb and its features/ gameplay).
new xmb display options
new animations for audio playback.
new photo album options.
playstation store auto ressume
psp remote play advanced access option (so that you can have access to your ps3’s content anywhere that has a internet connection)

http://threespeech.com/blog/?m=200612

Now there have been interviews with Phil that he has agreed that this firmware is real.

With the multi-tasking---hate this use of that term---firmware update, and you can do game invites, aren't cross-game invites a given?

Somebody else mentioned a key point. Adding the functionality to PSN is one thing, making sure every single dev/game support it is another, and just as critical.

There is no invite system atm.

For that to have been the case the developers would have to have 'hooks' (provided by Sony) implemented into their multiplayer games so the invite system would get which specific server to send a user. Also, all games would need another hook for launching a game automatically all the way into that server. Reading the Home FAQ, it seems like Sony will provide this in time for launch but it's a bit too vague to be certain.

To get back somewhat on topic, HDTVS are selling well according to you(and others) but it will still take years(3+) before it is dominant and it is possibly too late for the PS3(and the trojan strategy) by then.

And thus, the circle of life on GAF is complete.

I'll have to check the stats, but I'm pretty sure HDTV's outsold SD TV's in 2006 (this was the first year for that to happen).

See that's not going to happen for a while (i.e. not in 2007). This is what probably going to happen based on interviews and FAQs.

1. Multi-tasking to do manual invites.

A. You (Woo-Fu) while playing Motorstorm will hold the PS button and choose to go to the XMB

B. You will look for mckmas8808 and send me a message saying, "hey man feel like playing some Motorstorm online?"

C. Me (mckmas8808) while playing F.E.A.R. will see this message notification and hold the PS button to go to my XMB.

D. I would then read your message and reply back to you with a, "yeah man I'll be on in 5 minutes".

E. NOW I could either choose to start a chat through the XMB option (which is there now by the way) using my bluetooth device and talking to you while you have your headset on or I could just quit out of my game manually eject the disc and load up Motorstorm without talking to you while I'm doing this.

F. From here I would either talk to you through the headset letting you know that I'm now on the Motorstorm server and send you an in-game invite or message you (through multi-tasking to the XMB) that I'm on and send you an in-game invite.

ALL OF THAT IS BEFORE HOME EVEN DROPS THIS FALL!
Now HOME is different. But that's what Sony will do for cross game invites. They will make us manually do it. Now is that really that bad?

what interviews and faqs lead you to believe this?

the one faq you linked saying that there will be audio/video messaging in the XMB!?!?

There have been interviews with Phil since firmware 1.6 has been disclosed. Of course you know that Sony is quiet about every damn thing in history. We've had threads about firmware 1.6 and mulit-tasking. Have you not seen any of them?

And what do you think about the A - F invite system?

Yeah, pretty much. I'm sick of the sony apologists, and their echoing of the "its coming soon" pr spin. My attitude is wake me when and if it shows up. Hell, HOME doesnt' show up until october and who says that come october it'll actually arrive and if it does arrive that it'll do everything they say. Consoles aren't a religion to me. I'm not going to exercise faith in a corporate entity.
