Gamespot: Xbox One will play audio CDs, but not MP3s

so do we know if i can stream films/music etc. from my networked harddrive to the xbox one, ala ps3? i'm guessing this has been covered but i'm a bit rubbish with my networking/media streaming terminology.

Pointed out in the Twitch streaming thread by Venturer:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-can-t-play-music-from-usb-sticks-at-launch/

I'm a little disappointed media functionality has been a bit neglected by both systems (for launch), as I use my systems for media as much as I do for games. No doubt support will come eventually, though.

Welcome to year 2000 courtesy of Microsoft and their brand new 2013 console. :D

I cannot explain how laughable it is that it wont play mp3´s , i can't remember the last time i actually bought a cd.

Neither console is launching with all of its announced features intact. These OSs are coming in hot, so some less immediately important features will have to wait.

well, IN THEORY, you can't even PLAY GAMES out of the box, at launch...

Okay lets break this down simple like
Audio CD's- they work pop em in and they play...unlike the 360 it is unlikely you can rip them
MP3s on a usb key - They do not work at launch...this is because lack of external storage option for everything
DLNA mp3 streaming - works at launch in both a push (play to) and older school dlna method

TADA!

second part of the DLNA method has never been confirmed. Whenever pressed, MS' official response is "PlayTo" and "XBONE is DLNA 'compatible'." They've never specifically and outright said "yes you can play files from NAS over DLNA". Please correct me with source if this has changed.

Just like Sony, if they patch this functionality in at a later date.....it shouldn't be a big deal. Just growing pains of launch consoles.

We will survive.

what is "PLayTo"?

at launch, the only streaming XBONE will support is PlayTo. What this means is on your window device (PC, etc) you can select a media file/playlist, right click on it, and from the context menu select "Play To" and then your XBONE should pop up as an available device. That song/album/video will then play on your console no problem.

What isn't available at launch (unless I missed something) is the ability to connect to a NAS FROM your xbone and playback files directly on your console. aka you have to playback from a windows PC using PlayTo.

MS has said that the system is DLNA compatible and they are working on certification, but they have never actually said that you can playback files over DLNA besides PlayTo.

edit - well and XBox Music... but as far as streaming YOUR non-cloud files, only PlayTo at launch.

I only care about dlna, but by the time I pick up my XB1 I assume Sony will have patched it in

Puzzling that these next gen machines have less options than their predecessors

Thank You good sir. I am hoping windows media record files eventually work...but I have my doubts.

Quality,

What are Microsoft and Sony doing, are mp3's bad, or have they both just fucked up at the same time ?

My cynical side says it's to lead people into using whatever music subscription apps are available on their console. But it's probably just them ignoring stuff that is low on their list of priorities so they can launch on time. If a year goes by without either console adding mp3 functionality, that would be really stupid.

I have a feeling that Microsoft and Sony both had an idea to not play MP3s so they could force people to subscribe to their music services. I don't think it will work for them and we'll get MP3 and true DLNA support for both fairly soon.

Not the end of the world, sure; but I can't understand why we're going backwards with some stuff as we go forward with next-gen.

Not currently. As of now it only works using "PlayTo"

Which is technically playing an MP3.. that MP3 resides on a DLNA server (e.g. phone, pc, laptop, etc) and is being 'sent to' the XBOX 1, that plays it..

I'm still shocked that MS didn't bring over the 360 DLNA select music feature, I used that a lot..

I'm kind of less shocked but still disappointed that Sony didn't step up either..

Lets hope it's sorted soon for both, I might get an XB1 early next year, unless I go mad and try to find one on Friday in a store, which I doubt.. I think getting a PS4 and XB1 at launch might be a bit too much money..

Imbecilic. Albert? Larry? You guys like to weigh in on this?

Why in the world would Microsoft, while trying to push the XB1 as a multimedia experience, kill the thing we all used most about it? Everyone I know uses their 360 to stream music/movies via the system-based music player and video player.

Clearly they were both hoping no one would notice, care, or inquire about this and would instead just sign up for their music subscription services (Xbox Music, Sony Music Unlimited). You guys are so full of shit with your "OS Deadlines" or "Hurried Launch" apologist excuses. This is trivial, bog standard functionality we're talking about here.

This stuff is baffling. I don't get what any of these companies are going for. Both are trying to be like ultimate media boxes and they've sought to achieve this by remove standard media support the the old ones had... some of which has been standard on devices with disc drives dating back to the Sega CD.

Never even heard of PlayTo, but is it something free and comes on PCs? If enabling it is as simple as DLNA was (going to Windows Media Player and enabling sharing and then never having to touch it again and everything was fine as long as that computer was turned on) I guess it's not that big of an issue.

Surprised at this, you would have thought it a simple enough feature to add [to both XBone and PS4], trivial enough to chuck in during your lunch hour. Guess not.

Funnily enough I know someone who used the, "The PS4 can't play mp3's!" to explain his XBone purchasing decision.

effectively.. not technically.

effectively you are playing music on your xbone over the network. but technically it does not work how people are asking if it works (i.e. browsing from and playing from the console itself). MS has alluded to this feature coming, but at launch DLNA, as most people are expecting when they ask about it, is not there. Only PlayTo from another windows device.

Also your post is potentially flawed as I've asked if you can do PlayTo from your phone or surface and most owners' answers seem to be no. Is this wrong?

Not exactly. You play the media from your PC (actually start playback from the PC) and redirect output to your xbone. you can't actually select media or start playback from the console itself.

Will you be able to stream songs from Xbox Music while you play a game? I always wished that was a feature the Xbox 360 supported. I'm really happy with the way you can use Music Unlimited while your playing games on PS4 -- needs a bit of work but it's still awesome.

yes. this is 100%. You have full access to XBox Music from a Snapped application/window.

I have their music service so it doesn't bother me. I guess Sony and MS are pushing the music service hard this gen.

How many MP3s do you store on USB keys that you plug into your Xbox?

Or do you stream from your PC?

Fortunately, we've got a semi confirmation that the PS4 would be patching in MP3 and DLNA support. Boogie2988 on youtube (who was invited to the PS4 launch event) got word from Shuhei Yoshida himself, and Boogie is about as honest as they come.

I am fully enraged about this. Fully. If I did Twitter I'd be spamming Penello and Hyrb. Instead I PM'd them this thread.

Someone who does Twitter, go ask, repeatedly.

I am ready to give the XB1 a sample of Dolan's Dose.

Well that's a god awful replacement. Something I'd expect in like DLNA 2.0 but not something I'd want as a replacement. I'm not buying either console day 1 or probably even year 1 so hopefully they'll have stepped their functionality up to last gen levels by the time I want to jump in.
