so do we know if i can stream films/music etc. from my networked harddrive to the xbox one, ala ps3? i'm guessing this has been covered but i'm a bit rubbish with my networking/media streaming terminology.
Pointed out in the Twitch streaming thread by Venturer:

I'm a little disappointed media functionality has been a bit neglected by both systems (for launch), as I use my systems for media as much as I do for games. No doubt support will come eventually, though.
They've already changed their minds about that.PS4 has a CD laser because it has a DVD laser. They're just choosing not to support audio CD...probably for costs/licensing.
Dat Mattrick. You could on Xbox 360, lol
Okay lets break this down simple like
Audio CD's- they work pop em in and they play...unlike the 360 it is unlikely you can rip them
MP3s on a usb key - They do not work at launch...this is because lack of external storage option for everything
DLNA mp3 streaming - works at launch in both a push (play to) and older school dlna method
TADA!
The war on mp3s continue unabated.
what is "PLayTo"?
at launch, the only streaming XBONE will support is PlayTo. What this means is on your window device (PC, etc) you can select a media file/playlist, right click on it, and from the context menu select "Play To" and then your XBONE should pop up as an available device. That song/album/video will then play on your console no problem.
What isn't available at launch (unless I missed something) is the ability to connect to a NAS FROM your xbone and playback files directly on your console. aka you have to playback from a windows PC using PlayTo.
MS has said that the system is DLNA compatible and they are working on certification, but they have never actually said that you can playback files over DLNA besides PlayTo.
Quality,
What are Microsoft and Sony doing, are mp3's bad, or have they both just fucked up at the same time ?
It still has DLNA, so who cares. Stream your entire library over your network from your home PC.
My question: can it play MP3s via DLNA?
All in ONE.

Not currently. As of now it only works using "PlayTo"

Wait so it has a CD laser? It'd make more sense for PS4 to have a CD laser so I can play my PSone games...
Which is technically playing an MP3.. that MP3 resides on a DLNA server (e.g. phone, pc, laptop, etc) and is being 'sent to' the XBOX 1, that plays it..
Never even heard of PlayTo, but is it something free and comes on PCs? If enabling it is as simple as DLNA was (going to Windows Media Player and enabling sharing and then never having to touch it again and everything was fine as long as that computer was turned on) I guess it's not that big of an issue.
Will you be able to stream songs from Xbox Music while you play a game? I always wished that was a feature the Xbox 360 supported. I'm really happy with the way you can use Music Unlimited while your playing games on PS4 -- needs a bit of work but it's still awesome.
Welcome to year 2000 courtesy of Microsoft and their brand new 2013 console.
I cannot explain how laughable it is that it wont play mp3´s , i can't remember the last time i actually bought a cd.
My cynical side says it's to lead people into using whatever music subscription apps are available on their console. But it's probably just them ignoring stuff that is low on their list of priorities so they can launch on time. If a year goes by without either console adding mp3 functionality, that would be really stupid.
Not exactly. You play the media from your PC (actually start playback from the PC) and redirect output to your xbone. you can't actually select media or start playback from the console itself.
