Gamespot: Xbox One will play audio CDs, but not MP3s

Pointed out in the Twitch streaming thread by Venturer:
Xbox One users hoping to play music from a USB stick are out of luck. Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello confirmed on Twitter last night that this functionality will not be available when the system is released on Friday. "Not at launch," he said. It is possible that music playback from a USB stick could be added later, but Penello did not say one way or the other.

The Xbox One is DLNA compatible and will play CDs on launch day. However, like the PlayStation 4, users will not be able to store or play MP3s on the system at launch.

I'm a little disappointed media functionality has been a bit neglected by both systems (for launch), as I use my systems for media as much as I do for games. No doubt support will come eventually, though.
 
He says playing from USB sticks are not supported. Couldn't you stream via DLNA like a normal human being?
 
Okay lets break this down simple like
Audio CD's- they work pop em in and they play...unlike the 360 it is unlikely you can rip them
MP3s on a usb key - They do not work at launch...this is because lack of external storage option for everything
DLNA mp3 streaming - works at launch in both a push (play to) and older school dlna method

Yes, it says you can't store them and play them from the system but it's DLNA compatible.

Sadly it doesent. I has "PlayTo" functionality. You must go to your storage device [PC or Phone] where your media is located and manually send each file to be reproduced on the Xbone. You cannot initiate DLNA media streaming just by sitting in front of TV and using Xbone.

Isn't weird how the day before XBONE reviews are to come out (and are probably written already) MS decides to announce all the features that wont make it!! how convenient Microsoft!! I hope responsible gaming sites update their reviews to reflect all this. No MP3, no twitch ect...

Bull...to get certified by DLNA you have to be able to pull from media servers...they would have said if that wasn't the case
 
This is amusing. There are so many people on so many forums that have been using this as a jibe against Sony. I wonder when fans of consoles will learn their lesson and stop gloating?
 
Will it play tapes?


The OG Xbox played MP3s at launch. What's so bad now about playing MP3s that it's out for X1/PS4?
 
So can someone clear this up for me? Can you NOT stream music from your computer to either of these consoles? Is that what DLNA is? I never store mp3s locally on my current gen machines but I do stream stuff to them.

So what I did all generation on my 360 I can't do on the One? What's up with all these consoles taking backwards fucking steps.

Game is bad because I can't twitch MP3s?
 
I was going to come in here and say it's really not a big deal (still not to me) but then I really thought about how Microsoft has been marketing this as your all in one media machine. At least it has DLNA at launch though which is nice

This was announced three weeks ago when the PS4 news about MP3s broke. But keep tinfoil hatting, it's fun.

EDIT: So no media center support. Can I use DLNA to still point to my recordings though?
I'm thinking it won't work.
 
PS4 and XBOXone are definitely some kind of a next generation with their ability to ignore the present most important music compression standard. What about ogg?
 
This was supposed to be the ultimate multimedia box. That is how it is being advertised to gamers. This and no Twitch streaming undermines that message.
