Gamespy plays Unreal Tournament 3 PS3

We fired up the PS3 version, and the first thing we noticed was how crisp it looked. Our demo largely showed off Necropolis, a stage that shows off the Necris' native environment. We'd describe the art design as something along the lines of if H.R. Giger got to design Constantinople.
Control-wise, UT III will let you play with a controller or use a keyboard and mouse setup. We played with a Sixaxis, and noticed that the action felt pretty smooth for a console FPS. Primary and secondary fires both felt intuitively placed on the shoulder buttons, and both reloads and jumps worked well.
In the single-player portion of Unreal Tournament III, you'll have a branching campaign written by the author of Gears of War's storyline. The path you choose at certain pivotal points will, as it has with multitudes of other games, influence your ultimate outcome.
The logistics on downloadable mods are still being worked out, but if all else fails, you'll be able to get a mod from the PC version, slap it on any portable memory device that the PS3 can read, from USB drives to Memory Stick to SD Card, and put it on the PS3 hard drive. You'll also be able to install portions of the game to the PS3 hard drive to shave off some of the loading times.

Err, I thought these would all be downloadable from Epic servers?

Here is hoping. That is too much work.

Our favorite weapon that we saw during the demo, however, is the Stasis Field. The polar opposite of a force field, the idea of it is not to keep people out of your area, it's to trap them in it. Within the Statis Field, time is slowed down for anything that crosses into it, including people, weapons, and vehicles. It's a weapon that seems tailor-made for snipers and choke points. If you get caught in one, you'll even see the rocket or bullet that is coming to kill you in slow-motion. Our Midway rep mentioned that Epic is going for what it calls the "Nooooooooo Effect."

Ha!

Uh oh.

Oh well, Multiplayer and mods are where this game is at anyway, right?

Holy crap, can PS3 KB+M users play PC Gamers online? If this really runs at 60FPS and has cross platform play I might have to pick it up for PS3 (Something I'd never imagined I'd say)

And that Stasis Field field sounds pure evil :lol

It was stated it was 60FPS recently but you won't know till it's out.

well the previous games had a single-player part. I guess you can treat them as exercises....
Well, this one has a story unlike UT2K3 & 2K4.

It's 30fps.

UT3 ran at 60FPS at Leipsig but Mark Rein confirmed afterwards that the final version would be locked at 30FPS.

Doesn't really bother me, this game looks awesome and is a must buy regardless.

30 FPS even if I am running it in 640*480 :lol

The mod support sounds great. No hassles with epic or anyone else telling you what mods you can play.

We're dubious that you'll see any PC/PS3 cross-over (we expect that to be a focal point of the inevitable 360 version, whenever they're ready to talk about that again)

I thought PC/PS3 cross platform play was confirmed using GameSpy's own service?

well that quote is pretty wrong though, as Epic wants nothing to do with Games for Windows Live, which would be the only way they had crossplay. Accompanied by teh lack of kb/m support, the sentence is just plain stupid

UT3 PC doesn't use Live but that doesn't mean they can't do cross platform play (you can host PS3 servers with your PC UT3 actually). PS3 UT3 supports kb/m.
They won't be playable with each other though (since the PS3 version has a different gamespeed for gamepad players..etc).

what are you talking about?
The PS3 does supprot KB+M and you dont need windows live for the PS3 to play with windows users.

Yeah, I heard this as well. I demand some answers!

edit: oh. :(

CVG and someone else played it and reported it was running at 60fps. Mark Rein said later in a forum of some sort that it runs "well above 30fps" most of the time, but it wasn't locked at 60fps. I believe he stated they would eventually lock it at 30fps. It'd be nice if they gave us the option to unlock the frame rate.

edit... i guess i was the confusing one... i was referring to this sentence...

i just meant the gamespy article was all sorts of wrong with that sentence, since MS wont be doing cross platform play without games for windows support, which UT3 does not have. The xbox360 also doesnt have native kb/m support so if the game didnt have kb/m support there would also be no real reason to have cross platform play.

This is above and beyond the fact that pc/ps3 wont have it. Just in regards to the comment from the article

we're talking ps3 here, not 360.

ps3 can obviously do cross platform play without microsoft's game for windows service

ps3 supports kb/m.

edit: ah, saw your new post.

But the press release says this:

By incorporating GameSpy's online technology into Unreal Engine 3, the two companies have created an integrated one-stop solution for game developers looking to leverage the world's most advanced multi-player technology and game engine in one package. The partnership will span both the PC and PLAYSTATION®3 platforms within Unreal Engine 3, enabling seamless PLAYSTATION®3 and PC online functionality. Functionality available to Unreal Engine 3 licensees via Gamespy will include cross-platform gameplay, communication tools and competition applications.

The rest of it is at the link above. Does this not include UT3?

edit: link again

i believe the addition of gamespy was late in the UT3 development timeline. Its now supported in the UE, but not this game

people, the fact that the ps3 version has different run speeds etc is not a real reason why it can't have cross platform play. things like that are easy to change on the fly -- they could allow both options in the same game (depending on if you're playing on a ps3 server or a PC server). the biggest reason it might not happen (at this point, it could still go either way) is how ps3 patches have to go through certification.

As long as there's no hitches with the framerate, this game is as good as mine.

I think I'll stick with the PS3 version this Fall, and pick up the PC version early next year to do a simple MOD. I'm afraid my PC will choke on it, though.

My PC wouldn;'t even be able to play UT3 at a locked 30fps.

So this is my best option!

which is the reason why i will also get the ps3 version. It would cost me more then a ps3 in order to make my pc play this well

Wait a sinlge player campaign as in..story campaign not just shooting bots offline!?

AWESOME!!!!!!1

wonder if it would match up against something like halo lawl

Just curious, do you have something more concrete to back that up? I'm not disagreeing, just need to know for sure.

Mark Rein has responded to the recent rumors about UE3 on PS3 in a forum post in which he states that, “Epic heard that same kind of silliness about UE3 on Xbox 360 before we shipped Gears of War and we all know how that turned out.”

He continues to say that :

“The only way to silence the uninformed critics is to ship the games and let them play them for themselves. We’re continually optimizing our engine on all supported platforms and we will continue to do so for several years into this generation. What we ship on PC and PS3 this fall will be considerably better than the builds we’re showing here at Games Convention in every aspect.”

He also responded to the recent rumors that UT3 was running at 60fps at LCG. According to Mark, UE3 has more frames and more detailed than Gears. When a poster wrote that it would not be possilble to run UT3 at 60 fps, he quickly dismissed that rumored and said :

“60 fps with UE3 is possible if Epic sets that as our goal. They chose not to do that with Gears of War because Epic wanted to deliver a cinematic high-action experience with high-end graphics. Mark thinks everyone can agree we achieved our goal. With UT3 their goal is an even higher level of action, an even higher level of visuals, and to achieve this with even more players/bots in the game. Our goal isn’t 60 fps because they would have to compromise on some of those things to achieve it in every situation. Mark thinks, in the final game they’re going to lock frame rate at 30fps and you’ll be so happy playing the game, so thrilled with how amazingly it all comes together”

Because it wasn't a constant 60fps. If it isn't a constant 60fps, they can't turn on vertical sync to eliminate tearing, and so they have to lock it down to 30fps with vertical sync. Bioshock is also like this, but they allow you to switch between locked at 30fps and higher than 30fps.
