GameTrailers Hit with Layoffs?

Plus even if he was he could just set up Final Hours, LLC and he'd be fine.

Yeah. Despite the shit people have given Geoff in the past, he's probably the most notable personality/face of the entire industry. He could get a job anywhere, tbh. And well, he's actually extremely talented. When he does work (like Final Hours and other journalistic endeavors), the guys is really good at it. So yeah, while not everyone is a fan of his "PR" host of the industry stuff, he actually does incredible work.

I Can't say a bad word about you Ryan, I loved it when you Shane and Marcus went head to head on various topics. I knew Rich was gone when Rohan started popping up in voice overs GT Countdown {Rich Brown Voice}. So can I assume that Meg was also let go, damn it sucks but I wish all those affected the best and hope you land on your feet asap.

Yeah he's pretty damn talented. Excellent host, interviewer, journalist, author, and even PR when he wants to.

Either way, he's affected, which sucks. Gametrailers is probably my favorite gaming website and I'm sad to see the folks who make it so good have to be forced out.

All these talented people let go, but thank god Andrea fucking Rene at the Escapist will continue to be employed. Cause she's just too important and talented to let go.

*headdesk*

"Oh boy, let's use a group's misfortune to take a shot at someone completely unrelated and unaffected!"

Andrea Rene is awesome. She seems like a genuinely good person. I'm not sure why you're wishing some random person loses their job over someone you prefer.

Would be crazy if all the big name talent were offered to stay or leave with severance and they all left, then all defy would have to show for their money is a domain name.

Just to clarify, Geoff Keighley was NEVER a member of the GameTrailers staff. His position was always a contract employee of Viacom/Spike/GT. So all of the Doritos and Mt. Dew jokes were misdirected. Although Geoff did lead GT shortly after Shane Satterfield's departure, he was never a GT staff member.

Hope everyone effected finds something soon, good luck.

Glad Brandon is staying, he is the voice of gametrailers. Reason why I like watching the video reviews.

It looks like Defy is cutting out a large portion of the staff, and trying to keep the core and either rebuild or refocus the team from there. As a business move, it's smart. GT needs to be refocused and likely build it's youtube presence to gain greater exposure. As a moral sorta move, it's incredibly shitty to do just after e3.

Thanks for the impossibly long hours and months of planning, now pack your shit. What terrible timing for those involved, great way for new ownership to endear yourself to the few talented folks remaining. Hope they all land on their feet.

Yeah, the entire way they went about doing the lay offs after E3, just seems really suspect and shitty. I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but it's like laying off someone right before Christmas.

Does no Rohan=no pach attack? :(

Bosman has been the producer on Pach Attack for the past year. Unless Rohan was still doing something else with the show? Even so, not sure if Pach Attack is gone or not. I think Pach has said he gets paid nothing to do the show (unless I heard that wrong). So really, it's on the new owners if they want to continue to have that content or not.

In a perfect world even the ones who were proposed to stay quit the site and start a brand new website with the ones that got the boot.

I never understood why GiantBomb had so many subscribers, I mean 50$ per year is a lot. But now I know, I'd gladly pay that money for all the content GT put out. Hopefully everyone lands on their feet, I liked every single guy and girl I've seen on screen and I'm sure even the ones working behind the scenes were top notch.

Good luck everyone, I know it's impossible but if GiantBomb made the move they'd have my money immediately (I'll probably subscribe in September anyway).

PS: the last ManUps ending now is so sad, with Slusser eating sadly all alone

Ah, my bad. I've been seeing so many mentions of Bloodworth and Jones that I got confused, I thought someone had said Bloodworth was doing voiceovers.

It's fine, I'm kind of going crazy here (been refreshing this thread non-stop) and posting way too much. TBH, I'm just really upset about this. I'm a pretty empathetic person in general, so I always get really sad for the well being of others that lose their job in this industry. But GT was really special to me. I never expected to LOVE it the way I did. It crept up on me this past year, and became one of my fav things. So this news has really devastated me.

My last year in college was really rough. I went through some depression and really rough times. But this site was always something I could look forward to. It really got me through a really hard time in my life.

I probably need to step away from the computer and get my mind off of this. =/

I read that in his voice. It would be pretty jarring to hear any other voice doing a review on GT.

It really is sad. Like you I'm also refreshing constantly. What a horrible way to end an otherwise very enjoyable E3 :(

At this rate, I kind of hope everyone leaves ship. If Defy only want 20 people, they're asking for a war and accepting the torn refugees afterwards.

I don't want people to lose their jobs, but firing so goddamn many people is just asking for a total collapse and it just seems like the better choice for these talented people to go somewhere else and do something to prove a point.

Best case scenario is still everything staying the same, but Defy don't seem to want that.

I'll just chime in with my 2 cents - this sucks.

I should have guessed something was up when Marcus Beer left at the end of last year along with a few departures in the last year or so. It felt eerily similar to when 1up started to fall apart but no one outside of their office really knew or was able to say what was going on.

Looks like the worst of what happened in 1up.coms case is possibly occurring here too , new parent company, massive layoffs (I mean , it's what 50% of the staff ? and virtually all the senior employees) and if all goes really bad, the eventual absorption of the remaining IP's and assets and finally the website getting turned off.

I REALLY hope this isn't the case but it does seem odd that the oldest and most experienced staff members at GT outside of Brandon Jones have seemingly been given pink slips. Almost like the new owners saw their collective salaries and said "nah, we can higher younger people for less , screw 'em" Ian, Elyse and Kyle are all newer and I love their shows but they undoubtedly have lower salaries but know enough about the current state of the website that they were worth keeping.

I know I'll keep watching final bossman and mandatory update as well as the odd other show so long as they keep getting made. Hopefully those affected by the layoffs, whatever the reasoning behind them, all land on their feet and find new jobs soon.

Damn. They just refreshed their whole site and brand not even 2 years ago. Good luck to bloodworth, stevens, damiani, jones, and all the other vets in the Santa Monica office. There were still a couple of good guys there.

Edit: Maybe some of them will join Machinima. They're office is in Hollywood. Does anyone know how they are doing financially?

Like I said earlier, it really sounds like they're cutting back big time on the exclusive content that comes out of GT. If that's happening then it's not too surprising that he'd be wondering if sticking around is the right thing to do.

Well i mean, GT is just a name, people tuned in for the personalities.

The trailers, you can watch on YouTube, in this day and age.

You lay off personalities, you lose the value of what you just bought.

To me well it is such a shame what is happening. But like it happend with Gamespot back with Jeff like someone said in this thread. Everyone even who are still working there should leave it is still there decision to stay but such a huge group gone who people have been working with for years ends up being devastating. Defy media are such classy a-holes to even to this after E3 when people worked so hard to make great coverage.

A big group like that are like family at a point and that is difficult to leave that behind.
