Gametrailers - Lost Odyssey review

They're really positive about the game, so that's why I don't understand the fact that it doesn't score above the 9. Also, they really praise the game design, yet in the score department, it only gets an 8, doesn't make any sense.

The good:
-Story
-Graphics
-Music

The bad:
-Loading times
-Framerate drops
-Not innovating the genre

Overall:
8.8

After watching and hearing the review, yes it is.

I honestly think this is true
Don't seem like it. They were very positive on story and presentation, less so on gameplay and design (reflected in the individual scores) though still good (8.0+)

I've never played a JRPG before and while this does look pretty and inviting I'm not really for turn based gameplay and random encounters don't sound like fun.

Obviously they don't feel like it deserves more than 8.8 -- a damn high score -- and they wrote the thing.

It's not like they said the gameplay was bad, it just wasn't innovating, but since when has that become a bad thing?

Grading systems for video games are so arbitrary. "OMG only 8.8 that's terrible!" If it was 9.1 then people would say "Yeah a 9.1, it must be a great game" Doing a 100 point system (0.0-9.9) is so retarded I can't believe the industry hasn't matured past this stupid crap.

8.8 is not bad, but it's just not....

No I'm positive about picking it up, it's just that I was expecting more

Technically, 5/10 would be average, 6/10 would be above average and anything above would be between "good" and "excellent."

But yeah, this is the internet we're talking about here. If it's not above 9.2/10 then it's a shit game.

Expecting more? From a gametrailers review? How much more were you expecting? Do you have a history of what scores they give similar games in the genre, for the console, within the last 6 months, from the same developer, from the same producer, etc.? What were you basing these expectations on? I mean is the review from gametrailers really a make or break thing for you? You said "8.8 isn't bad" and then basically followed it up with "but I wish it was above 9.0."

This isn't a personal criticism of you but this mindset is very widespread on this and similar message boards on the internet and I think it's pretty rediculous.

It would score 9.4 if it was called Final Fantasy.

Funnily enough thats what I was thinking when playing it only in a bad way. They need to get away from making a ff style game. In ff you get the nostelgic 80s end battle song because its part of the series. Adding them in a game like this doesnt work.

I'm pretty excited for the game after the video review. Looks like exactly what I've been waiting for in an RPG for sometime (and yeah, that is, in fact, classic jrpg gameplay mixed with an emotionally-charged storyline).

I've been listening to the soundtrack, and it has me pumped. Day 1. :D

You know there's a reason why 1UP changed their grading-system from numerals to letters. PEOPLE FUCKING DONT GET THAT 5/10 IS MEDICORE.

Wow, this game is next week? It's been a while since I've delved into the world of JRPG but this game is drawing me in with it's eye candy. Looking forward to more reviews/GAF impressions.

This is outrageous.

One source says the narrative is nothing but a series of shallow, poorly conceived events with paper-thin, banal characters while the Gametrailers review outright denies that, claiming the story's amazing emotional value, depth, and artistry that stems from ingeniously constructed situations and character interactions set Lost Odyssey apart from other RPGs enough to warrant the "the first true next-gen JRPG" moniker. Oh, and and to top it off, the hollow but superficially "adult" characters are actually well developed and fascinating to learn about as the game progresses.

And then, Hilary Goldstein's write-up discusses the story's absolute hackneyed structure (he makes it seem like an utter cliched MESS) and comments on the characters as well, professing that even they suffer from the ailment that plagues the story.

Jesus, talk about contradicting opinions.

Game needs some aliens and big dudes with guns to be mass appealing.

Hilary gave Tao Feng, the worst fighting game ever made, an 8.7. How he's still reviewing after all that time boggles the mind.

Blinx, worst platformer of its time, he gave it an 8.8

Talk about bad taste.

Wow it's reviewing better than I anticipated, especially after that Bebpo and Duckroll review thread. Might have to pick this up now.

I'd just like to say WOW at that review. Great review, fun to watch and i'm mega hyped for next week now!

GameTrailers also gave Assasin's Creed a 9.1.

I don't know, the contradictions present in the reviews for this title really make me uneasy about picking it up. I lost faith in MistWalker after Blue Dragon, but was still holding on to a bit of hope that they'd get it right with LO.

But outside of one review, all of the comments regarding the story and score (the most important aspects for my personal enjoyment of an RPG) have so far been overwhelmingly negative.

It's easy to decide on purchasing a game if the critics, on a fundamental level, point the consumer in a certain direction. However, when the a JRPG's vice -- the genre's most defining element -- is, after several reviews, already victim to severely contrasting opinions like this, how can the consumer (I) decide if I should buy this?

And then Play's gonna' come out with a 9/10 review next month (maybe a 10/10, but that's Play and their reviews are...different).

This post voices my opinions closely. The story has been received terribly here on GAF (judging from the LO Japanese Thread) and as if by some divine force, Gametrailer's pierces the congested nose of Lost Odyssey's negative state with Flonase, denouncing the title's story as the JRPG-story-to-beat.

Terribly? huh?

Since the gameplay kinda stopped being fun 6 years ago?

You should also see more GT reviews, praise + "low" (not really) scores is normal on GT.
