Haha, that guy is a complete and utter retard.

360* =/= 180*

ROFL I wonder if anybody else is catching the Last Action Hero Reference there. or maybe i'm just crazy

seeings that i've seen the movie at least 30 times and owned the sega game at one point

Just wondering...how is mass effect even considered an rpg? Action rpg...yes, Rpg by it's self....no. So with this in mind how can you compare LO to ME?

You are right. Mass Effect is way too open and you have to make too many decisions and stuff...

Seriously, you are joking, right? RIGHT?

I think you misunderstood my question, there is clearly a difference in gameplay. How can you compare them? It's not like there even close to being the same.

Okay, then I did, and I have to agree actually :) Gameplay wise it's impossible to compare them.

However, Mass Effect is an "real" RPG in my opinion but one hard to compare with something like Lost Odyssey.

Wait till you are at the third DVD. It's almost non stop awesomeness :)

Typically, I skip JRPGs for a few reasons (keep in mind my JRPG experience is limited to FF7,8 and 9):

- Extremely obscure sidequest that you would never discover with out the aid of a Strategy Guide or Game FAQ, which leads to the most important and powerful loot.

- Story and dialog that always seems to lose something in translation. The games I've played suffered from this. Maybe not as severally as in some other games in other genres but story and dialog are far to important in an RPG to ignore.

- Strange difficulty curve. In FF7, 8 and 9, you could easily work your way to the final encounter, only to discover you have 0% chance of victory. That's why my first complaint is such an issue. If you don't level you character properly and gather the right equipment you may not find out about it until the last 45 minutes of the game.

Taking that all into consideration, will I enjoy this game or is this genre just not for me?

How much filler does Lost Odyssey have? How much grinding, how many pointless combat encounters, how many tedious item-hunts, and so on?

Good effort.

You'll like it I think. The dialogue has been very well translated - I suspect it was written with English in mind. The combat isn't boring and you can level characters pretty fast - there's a soft level limit for each area that helps ensure each boss is balanced to be a challenge, but not an impossibility.

Not much grinding for exp, as each area has a level cap, so you gain exp really fast then you hit the cap and it then takes about 40 battles to level.
You can grind for SP for your Immortals to learn skills, but that does not take long.

I do warn you, if you often grind like no tomorrow in most jrpg's so you can crush everything, Lost Odyssey's bosses will kick your arse, well the first 2 anyway hehe.

I don't get the score with what they said in the review. 8.8 for doing nothing new and unique?

Eh...I'll rent it.

Innovation is overrated. If the 'Old and Busted' gameplay is done well then I see no problem with a lack of innovation.

Yeah, cause you know... can't have any old gameplay, because we all know the games already out suck so bad.

This fact needs to be broadcast. LOUD. LO has a level cap for every area :lol Diminishing Marginal Returns people!

You can level grind your way through, if you are really an immortal like the game's characters are and you don't mind getting crap exp per fight. Once you've learnt the skills you need, pay attention to the spells in chests, this game is grind free. It is an easy game after the disc 1 at max for neophytes, if you're still having trouble don't be afraid to ask for fear of looking stupid. Everyone's learning curve for different things have discrepancies. That's why Nature v. Nurture is an endless debate.

Encounter rates for the most part is low. Rarely will it get on my nerves. Nowhere is this as ridiculously high as Skies of Arcadia where every 3~5 seconds the battle loading screen pops up - if I have to put an estimate, it is roughly 5~10 times lesser. You can walk freely at one map for 20~50 seconds without triggerring off a random battle.

How many pointless item fetchquests... well I'm not qualified to give an indepth answer yet. An early assessment will be: early in the game, quite a handful of redundant (Cure-all as reward...:x), late in the game when you want to go on a power trip, those are worth the effort. Midgame there are some nice weapons and accessories...but nothing is an absolute necessity to defeating the monsters in LO. Pretty standard fare of jrpgs right? Early game = crap loot; endgame = elite gear.

While we are asking questions: are there any items that lower/eliminate the rate of encounters? That's in important issue for me in games that have such a system.

The game plays like you're using one all the time.

heh heh no. I don't see any reason to get excited for a game that screams "same old, same old in HD"

Even if your going to stick to more traditional design, is it to much to ask for something unique. Suikoden does it. Persona does it etc etc

Well they could have given it a 10 by saying its the second coming of Fire Pro Wrestling.
:lol Well if Gametrailer said the formula was perfect and had no room for improvement, then I might think differently. Fire Pro has very few equals.

Hey, dumbasses -- let's stop talking about the score, and more about the game.

This is a review thread, last time I checked.

Isn't there an official LO thread that can fulfill your needs?

This game is getting mixed reviews from different sites. Some people praise the story and characters and some abhor it.

Did anyone read Gamespy's review? I dont think its worth starting another thread for so ill post it here.

Pros:
Pretty battles; occasional sweeping vistas; skill systems solid; balanced combat difficulty.

Cons:
Story and characters shamelessly derivative; hideous load times; wide variety of technical issues; story signifies nothing.

Score: 2.5/5

WTF? Which site to true? So the story and characters rock or sucks? Which is it :lol ?

I am looking forward to this game even more now that I know that grinding isn't required.

good score...it definitely doesnt seem to be the game I thought it might be (certainly not as dark and mature)...but it seems like a good high budget rpg...the best so far this gen (though thats not saying much yet). I doubt I will get to play it, but seems like anybody with a 360 who enjoys jrpgs should prob give it a shot.

I personally think reviews for RPGs are some of the most important ones for games. Generally I can get the feel for whether or not a game will be good almost immediately after a first impression for most genres, but RPGs is not one of them.

A lot of time is invested in a title to decide whether or not it is good or not (due to the story aspect). In a sense, I don't want to waste time/money with a long RPG if it doesn't suit me, so I do consider it important, and it's disappointing when there's such considerable disagreement.
Pretty much. As soon as the reviewer starts saying things like it's not pushing the genre, battle system feels dated, it's beautiful, story is typical JRPG throw-away cliche garbage, I know I will love the game!

Judging by the amount I've played, I'm siding with Gamespy and Xplay. Pretty graphics, nice combat; ridiculous story, bad acting, gameplay gets boring, frequent load times. Waaay too many pointless cutscenes.

We've actually got a good amount of pre-orders on this game. It honestly seems to me that the normal gaming world outside of GAF is really excited about having old school turned based combat. Its almost the first question people ask me when they want to know about the game "Is the combat like the old Final Fantasy's??" So I don't know, but based off people coming into my store (and its just my store not the whole US before some smart ass says something lol) people want an old school RPG.

do you have a problem when an rpg pushes the genre?

We know, you've said it a couple times. You seem to selectively pick the few mediocre reviews out of the several good ones :lol And goodluck beating Lost Odyssey within a rental time frame.

I can see Lost Odyssey is going to have polarizing reviews like Blue Dragon.

I find the argument of the gameplay being "nothing new and more of the same" a bit off. If they were to apply the same standards to most sports and FPS games, their scores would be collectively lower than usual.

Opposite for my store. Other then me and a co-worker I have not seen a pre-order.
