Gametrailers - Lost Odyssey review

FF12 Battle system in new to the series itself only, we've been there with games like KOTOR before.

Kotor's battle system is actually many times more fun.

If FF12's battle system was done as it was in Kotor then I would actually enjoy playing Final Fantasy XII.

Awesome more of the same JRPG with long load times to boot. I think I'll pass on this one.

Good idea! Write it off without even trying the game! Make sure to come back in a few weeks and flame the game based off of summaries from negative reviews! Just make sure you never admit you haven't actually played it!

The load times aren't that long. Those between areas aren't a problem at all, and while those before/after battles are a minor annoyance they aren't even close to those of, say, Suikoden 5 or Xenosaga 2.

I think you misunderstood my question, there is clearly a difference in gameplay. How can you compare them? It's not like there even close to being the same.

Is there really that much of a difference in gameplay? The battle systems and settings are different, but they still follow the same basic RPG formula so the comparison works.

While I can appreciate the traditional approach (especially after BD, which tried too hard to be different IMO), I wish the battle sequences in LO were more ME-like, but perhaps I am asking too much of LO... After playing ME, I was hoping that LO would be like ME only in a JRPG setting.

Wow, what a great review. I've grown to trust and love GameTrailers' reviews more than any site online.

I had pretty much dismissed LO earlier, but this review single-handedly made it one of my most wanted game.

It's dangerous to put that much stock in one single review, but LO seems like exactly the kind of game I've been waiting for since Final Fantasy X.

I've never really enjoyed a FF game (I've played VII, VIII and X, didn't bother with XII) but I'm loving Lost Odyssey.

I haven't played a JRPG in years and Lost Odyssey couldn't have been a better return to the genre. So far, there isn't a single thing I don't like about it. The story rocks, your party members are actually likeable, voice work is strong for the most part, the graphics are stunning at times, the art design is very appealing, the soundtrack is superb, the combat is actually enjoyable and the random encounters aren't nearly as annoying as I thought they'd be. That and the 1000 Years of Dreams segments are truly engaging. They're almost worth the price of admission alone.
:lol That's pretty much what I needed to hear. I suspect I will be in a similar boat to you. Thanks a lot for the info - it sounds really good.

Quite frankly, I just don't care about (most) reviews anymore. I've come to discover that my tastes, as I get older, differ more and more from what reviewers rate highly. That's not to say "my tastes get shittier with old age", I'm only 22 for christ's sake, but I think I subscribe to the notion that any future games I play should provide something new for me.

While LO clearly doesn't redefine contemporary expectations of what RPG gameplay "ought" to be, I think I subscribe to this ridiculous ambition Sackaguchi is always pimping with the emotion of LO. If the game can be emotionally stimulating in any way (something most games I've played fail over and over to do, when they try), then I'll consider it a 10/10. I prefer this narrow-minded yet focused attempt at great storytelling with an emphasis on evoking emotion more than I do the mindless hack-and-slash action RPGs that crowd the heavens.

So far it seems to me that the included short stories (+images/music) succeed better at fulfilling your wish than the game itself.

Might as well. I'm certainly not buying it for the turn-based battles, ring forging, and grinding sessions.

Yes (I have a PAL 360). And it's cheaper as well.
Just ordered this from Play Asia. First time I've ever imported something like this (unless you count buying already imported games from retailers in my country.)

Hope everything goes well. Even with VAT it should end up cheaper, and it'll be here 10 days early.

If anything screws up, I'm blaming you. :)

I too just saw the commercial for this game, holy SHIT wow! i had a friend and peer with me there and they were all like "whoa, wow" too and they rarely play games. one guy said "if that was a movie i'd run out to the theater to watch it right now".

:D :D

does this game have random attacks while you're walking around, ala old ff/dw style? thats pretty much what it comes down to for me when deciding buy or pass.

Yes. That commercial is one hell of a eye catcher. LO looks gorgeous.

What im in the mood for right now is a game with big production values, huge scope and lavish set pieces. This game kinda seems like it has those things so im gonna be getting it.

The short stories are one of the best parts of the game for me. I've only read one bad one so far, and the rest (must have read about 14) have been fantastic. Does such a good job of filling Kaim out as a charater.

man....wish there was a place I could print out the Jpan Boxart and swap it out with my US one =(
Heh, I kind of prefer the US boxart for a change. I like the style of the JAP boxart but the pallette doesn't really do it for me.

Yeah the ad is pretty good. Where did you see it? MS seems to be actually pushing this game. I wonder if it can come close to Mass Effect sales number?

Have they hinted about a demo?
I wish they would, I just wanna play it!! I've been waiting a long time for this game. Any playtime would be great. Didn't japan get a demo?

I can't really see a demo doing the game justice.

Most likely they would choose a bad section like the very beginning/TGS06 demo due to all the fmw's.
One or two battle choices.. yay.

How many hours of FMV will be in this game?

The TV ad is the best I've seen since R&C and BioShock before that.
After the backlash against the Blue Dragon demo, I'd be surprised if they put a demo out for LO.

Lost Odyssey's back row system sounds similar to Suikoden's.

yeah....when they were talking about it...it pretty much also sounded near identical to the Blue Dragon battle system....even with the same spell names and what not.
Is this true? ...is it just a modified version of that...if so, thats kinda cool as far as Mistwalker continuity

The front/back row system isn't the same as BD's at all. In BD if you are in the back row you are protected whatever happens, but in Lost Odyssey each time one of your character at the front loses HP, the GC bar diminishes. The GC is divided in 4 zones, if it's between 3/4 and full, then your back row gets 4 times less damage... You should get what I'm meaning.
Even if you heal your front row chars the GC is not going back up. You can use spells to do it, but simple healing doesn't work.
Enemies also have GC of course, so in the case of "regenerating" enemies it's still possible that the back row isn't protected at all on concentrate on it.

so, with that, does it add a good layer to the combat then?

so-so != terrible. So-so could mean good, decent, or bad, anything, depends on the person who plays and the expectation you have.
Oh no, not at all. I just brought up the point of the Short Stories because that is the main focus that gets the true praise. Everything else just had much more potential.

I want Venus and Braves now.

Saw a lot of advertisement on the Military channel for some reason.

Yeah it adds a bit of depth to the combat since it allows you to concentrate on the back row (usually the most dangerous) once you have the GC down enough.
During some boss fights it's very important since some of them have always respawning monsters on their front row. So you have to at least kill all of them once to reduce the GC to zero, then you can concentrate on the boss itself. It's something you couldn't do with the usual front/back row system. Or at least not as efficiently.

aaahhh....like that fight early on with the Worm and the crabbies yeah?

On one had, I loath JRPGs and I really doubt this will be any different.

On the other hand, that commercial is pretty cool.

I guess the key factor would be the storyline, is it interesting? I know it's very derivative but is it good regardless? This is coming from a fellow who thought FFXII's storyline was boredawful.

it was on a sports channel [i think maybe espn] b/c we were all out eating at Billy Simms Barbeque which always has sports on.
