GameTrailers Top 10 Worst Final Fantasy Games

Hard to argue with much of that list, really.

Although, I gotta admit I don't quite understand all the ire for XIII. Lightning is horrible, and the saga is stupid, but as a standalone game, I think it's well-made with a fun battle system and a generally more interesting than not cast and story. That's more than I can say for VIII.

XIII is nowhere near as bad as the games in that top 10. It's the same game that many review sites beat and gave a positive score to, that now retroactively hate it because the internet hates it.

FFXIII hate from publications that have it high scores is baffling to me. It's an RPG, so it's literally the same game it was the day you beat it, but now it's awful and terrible and very bad. Hilarious.

Yeah that is my feelings as well. It shows a lack of confidence in their own reviews. It also opens a can of worms in that older reviews are not valid.

XIV 1.0 to 1.23 was such a strange time, patch by patch that game went to complete opposite spectrums of quality.

XIV 1.0 absolutely deserves to be there, I play ARR actively and 1.0 was barely even a game, but by the time YoshiP arrived, it was already a different game when 1.23 ended.

A little surprised to see Chocobo's Dungeon on there and not Crystal Bearers. Hell, I'd say Final Fantasy 3 (not the US one) deserves a spot on that list.

Was I the only one that loved The After Years? On the Wii?

The fact that I used the Wii Point cards I got for my b-day that year to buy all the parts (and therefore didn't spend any of my own money on it) might have taken the sting out of how overpriced it was. Even so it is the only direct FF sequel I've ever enjoyed.

Like others have said II is a really fun game. It has it's flaws but I thought it had a really interesting system. It's not the best but it does not belong on this list.

I think a ton of those are great games, and this top ten was completely unnecessary. If you have to resort to including amazing games on your list of the worst, then you don't have enough bad games to warrant a list.

So the current editorial staff can't disagree with a review an old staffer did 4 years ago? You don't know what the conditions many of the reviewers that played the game were under. For all we know some reviewers may have only played 20 hours and called it a day. Back then people were too afraid to review a FF game poorly. Let's also not forget that you said it got great reviews but it's also the one of the lowest critically received mainline FF games.

FF2NES is the objectively worst because it is actually broken and can be unbeatable.

No, you didn't.

About 3 people here played FF2NES.

I played it. It's still better than XIII.

Also putting The After Years above XIII is a fucking crime. Do you all hear me? A goddamn CRIME. The After Years is an infinitely better piece of game and I will argue any one of you on that point.

When it comes to "Worst FF" lists made by committee, FFVIII will never make the cut (which it shouldn't) as it has just as many die hard fans as detractors.

There's also the bandwagon haters who just go along with whatever they think the consensus is or what their favourite youtube celebrity tells them. If FFVIII came out back in the day without the Final Fantasy name attached to it, it would be looked at as a gem in the same way we praise games like Xenogears or Suikoden. Being the game after FFVII is what doomed VIII to a decade of bickering on forums.

To think VIII is one of the worst games in the FF series when you look at some of the absolute shite Square Enix has put out in the last decade is laughable and a damn disservice to that game and the Squaresoft of old.

Let's be honest here, you guys wish SE still made games at the level of quality and care that Squaresoft put into VIII.

This truth.

I think the systems and story in FFVIII are utterly terrible (calling it a gem in any context or the people who dislike it "haters" is nothing but nonsense) but the presentation is top notch, it doesn't deserve a spot on the list. FFXIII was abhorrent in ever respect until it opened up after about 50 hours and became a bad version of XII.

Being after 7 is exactly what made 8 so monumental. It showed that Square could recover from such a botched game. And the buzz around the theme of love being the main story point was huge back then. The game was groundbreaking for not being some trek across the world to beat crazy lala evil villain guy.

I can't wait for people to go back to XIII in ten years and realize that there's a very good game underneath all of the internet hate.

let's take a moment to check how did this game do with the site staff and users back when it released...woops!

yea, the video points out that the game got a high score but the current staff hates it.

if you hated a game, do you think you will like it in 10 years? not everyone liked it like you.

VIII is a sloppy mess. it might not be the worst in their entire library but it wasn't that good either. i played the game at launch. never read reviews or listened to anyone else. i beat the whole game and it was super disappointing. the more i look back on it the more i hate it.

Truth Bombs over Baghdad, Goddamn

Honest question, did you buy ATB?

I did and it's horrible.

Sure, if it had been released free then it wouldn't have been as bad but charging for a game like that was what sealed it as terrible. It also doesn't help that it had micro transactions to buy your favourite characters. Not as a bundle, no, they charged PER character and it was RANDOM.

XIII-2 is absolutely a worse game than XIII but they probably decided there was no way couldn't have XIII on the list.

people should watch the video before mentioning VIII/X though... if you think those games are worse than what was shown there is something seriously wrong with you. i did enjoy seeing VIII int he beginning though, nice touch lol
