Gametrailers Top Ten Worst Endings

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver should be on the list. That game had one of the most disappointing endings I've ever seen. Shame b/c the rest of the game is outstanding.

Soul Reaver should be on here too. I mean, yeah I love the game, but the ending really really really leaves a bad taste in you mouth unless you have immediate access to Soul Reaver 2.

This, this, this.

How on Earth can you put together a list of "Worst Endings" and not include what was basically a "...to be continued" for a game that players had no certainty would get a sequel, and that was only continued 2 years or so later on a different platform!

Metal Gear Solid 2 certainly shouldn't be on this list.

Metal Gear Solid 4 however, should. That ending was all kinds of stupid. No soul or feeling to it whatsoever, just dull techno-babble and cliche'd melodrama.

"How are you still alive?"

"Nanomachines."

MSG2 was really on the pulse of internet memes like lolcatz controlling the population. But it's fucking weird, hard to comprehend, and is so overly dense that your eyes glaze over after the first 15 minutes. And then it goes on for another half hour. My 360 controller shut off twice during the final codec and the actual ending.

It wasn't even depressing, and that certainly isn't why it made the list. The whole thing made barely any sense, and was bloated so much that it seems like Kojima was parodying himself looking back on it. Things like the codec conversation just before the last battle starts are why it's on the list.

the ending makes sense and the game actually goes out of its way to explain it for you.

Does anyone have a link to that really long article about MGS2's story? I think it was called The Philosophy of Metal Gear Solid 2? Or something like that.

No RAGE?

Fully agreed.

Objectively speaking, the ending to MGS4 was absolute drivel; save for one scene which was good but even then didn't end the way I felt it should have.

I see the media is still pushing the myth that Kotor 2's ending was horrible/incomplete. If the fucking peasants knew how to critically think they would know better.

Also why the hell is this thread full of spoiler tags?

That's your interpretation of the ending? Meme means information being passed on to the next generation, in the past only important bits of information would be passed on. But now that every single bit of information is being preserved because of the internet, the 'natural selection' of information has stopped. So the Patriots wanted to censor the internet so that they could control what gets passed on to the next generation.

I think it goes deeper than that, but the basic message is pretty simple.

They put Ghost´n Goblins on the list.. but not any Mario game..? "sorry the princess is in another Castle"..? wtf,,?

the use of memes in mgs2 refers back to dawkins original meaning when he coined the word, not the internet usage of it.

p sure hes trolling anyway,

Putting
Ghosts & Goblins
there, in any spot, let alone the
1st place
, is so random and uncalled for.

It's a game from the 80 with no ambition whatsoever regardin script or story and never tried anything in the first place. Even by those standards, Karnov arcade/NES and Ghostbusters for NES have worse endings...

plain stupid.

Yes. And they were doing it with lolcatz. Can't you see?

In terms of execution, there's no doubt that the ending of KOTOR2 was lacking and unfinished. The pacing is terrible once you reach the Star Destroyer and the cop-out at the end by having Kreia function as explicit exposition to tie up any loose ends is simply a bad form of storytelling. No doubt Obsidian could have done better if Lucasarts hadn't cut the development time short, but as it stands, the ending is indubitably lacking.

There's a lot more game past level 1-4.

But surely the worst endings are from the olden days when you just got a "Game Over" screen.

The ending makes sense? as in, the whole thing? Long drawn out codec conversations, sailing toward the Manhattan bridge (Or whatever it is), Rose's part during the ending... The after-credits Patriots scene?

Yeah, no it doesn't. Even slightly.

lol

The MGS4 one is an ending that like it or not explains everything or almost and makes somewhat sense whereas the mgs2 one don't.

please explain your current understanding of the mgs2 ending and i will fill in the pieces that are missing or you do not understand.

Does Shenmue 2 count? It basically explicitly states that everything you've played up to that point is the prologue (of a story that will never continue).

Okay then. I haven't played it for years, so some bits might be a bit off. Also, I'll spoiler tag it, because even though potential spoilers should be obvious considering the topic, well, whatever.

Rose and Campbell at some point, are revealed to not be real. As I recall, this is before she tells Raiden that she's pregnant, so the person who says she's pregnant isn't Rose, it's the AI. At the end, they refer to the baby, so I guess Rose is psychic? Also, genuinely pregnant... And why was she there in the first place? Raiden probably rang her and said "Hey, just had a swordfight with a Spiderman villain, see you in five".

Speaking of Solidus, how did a gigantic nuclear-equipped... Submarine... Thing... That's full of ninjas and other nasties, not to mention all the Metal Gear RAYs, crash into a harbour in a populated city, whilst two weirdos in sci-fi outfits have a swordfight on top and nobody gives a fuck? This makes sense?

And how did Fortune protect everyone from the missiles at the end? And why? And doesn't she want to be killed anyway?

And that whole codec conversation before you fight Solidus is really bizarre. Raiden shares his name with a weapon? So what? Was he named specifically because of that? Why? And this consciousness that built up in the white house... How does this relate to Arsenal Gear and GW? That whole part is bizarre. Has Raiden always been working for this AI? How has he never realised? And if he hasn't always been working for the AI, how is he a part of the Solid Snake Simulation?

And what is the point in the Solid Snake Simulation? To create a super soldier? It seems like a slightly contrived way to go about it, doesn't it? And it doesn't even simulate anything. Raiden gains nothing from the experience. It cost whatever brain box put the simulation together an astounding amount of money. It cost them the Big Shell, Arsenal Gear and everything inside it, a bazillion dead guys... We're talking billions, easily! And Raiden comes out the same as he always was anyway!

I'm pretty sure I could I go on talking about these kinds of things for loooooads longer, but I probably shouldn't. Maybe it's a combination of me misunderstanding it and misremembering it, but to me... I think sense is a strong word for this story.

Killzone 3 should be on that list. The game was pretty bad after the gloriousness that was KZ2 but the ending in particular was a big pile of steaming faeces.

A list of bad endings in my mind is about I was enjoying this great game and then all of sudden the ending left a bad taste in my mouth almost ruining the stuff that came before. Dark Souls is a huge fuck no in that department. Did anyone really play that game for the plot?

lol

We will agree to disagree.

I thought the ending to 4 was a convulted, overly long, boring and complicated mess, containing some absolutely appalling cringe moments. I thought MGS4 could have truly ended in one or two places that would have made it an incredible close to the series, but it didn't and that was the difference.

But, opinions how do they work etc. Just my two cents.

MGS2s ending really should've been placed on number 1 or 2. It was embarassingly bad, trying to combine philosophical and scientific theories with shocking ignorance.
It's like Kojima just randomly opened introductionary textbooks, copied some choice qoutes and put them in a random order, then trying to fill in the blanks with some of the worst conspiracy theory bullcrap tropes. And then we didn't even start with the actual form.

Same goes for MGS4, Kojima is so self enamored with his high school philosophy models that he managed to even top MGS2s idiotic ending.

Still, Number 1 was an easy pick, as 8-16 bit games were notorious for this shit.

My personal number 1 would've been the ending to the original Soul REaver. What a bunch of cheap bullshit, made more frustrating when compared to the amazing game it concluded.

The whole point of Dark Souls
is that it doesn't end, its an endless cycle which is why several of the NPC's eventually "hollow".

Way to miss the point.

Exactly.
There is no actual end to Dark Souls. It continues and continues (and gets harder and harder heh). And the souls series was always about gameplay first.

And MGS2 being on the list m( Put MGS4 on the list, omg.

Can someone explain to me why AC1's ending was bad? I played the game to the end and didn't see anything wrong with it.

Because the credits just roll out of nowhere. You see a creepy drawings all over your wall and then it's over. The game lets you stroll around Abstergo reading e-mails and pondering afterwards, but in 2007 that game wasn't exactly well-received and there was no guarantee there'd even be an Assassin's Creed 2 to make good on any of that. How times have changed :P

Changes that need to be made:

1. Remove KOTOR 2
2. Remove Dark Souls
3. Change MGS2 -> MGS4
4. Put Mass Effect 3 at number 1.
