Gaming message boards..where did you start?

I was active on Final Fantasy: Worlds Apart and RPGMaker.net (even mod/admined at the latter for a while) years ago.

I think FF:WA is still around, RPGMaker hasn't been for forever.

I was raised on nothing but Gamespot since '97, back when I wasn't a serious gamer. When I began getting more into gaming in '02, I participated in Xbox forums, and occassionally the system wars. Unfortunately, I was once one of the 'lemmings' on the forums until I realised the error of my ways. After it went downhill, I came here just recently.

I have a 360 and enjoy it, but I just never got why Lemmings were hated most out of Cows/Sheeps/Hermits. I thought all of them were douches at times.

Yeah, I took me a couple of months to realize that System Wars was a pointless thread, since the arguments never went anywhere most of the time. It's also when I realized it was dumb for me to be a fanboy worshipping only one console.

My life on videogame message boards started here. Unless if I was googling something about a game that brought me to a random discussion about said query, I definitely have to say GAF is my first home.

-Started on ToonZone video game boards, before getting banned after 700+ posts due to yelling at morons for starting the seventh "Favorite Final Fantasy?" thread, when a simple use of the search button could have sufficed

-Moved to IGN Board when I started perusing their website often. It's where I got the avatar I use all the time now. I love that sleeping Pikachu. It was a lot of fun to just argue before the systems came out and people were talking about games and stuff I didn't have.

-Came to NeoGAF at some point because someone kept bringing them up at the IGN boards. Haven't looked back since.

For console gaming, I guess I started out posting on IGN. Didn't post much because it was a cesspool. Then they started making people pay for the forums, and it actually became somewhat less of a cesspool. Once people started getting sponsored for spamming the OT forum it turned back into a total cesspool.

GameFAQs, because I wanted to know whether to buy a PS2, Gamecube or Xbox in the wake of the Dreamcast's death.

Just checked my account, I have 0 active messages posted there. GAF is my home now, got turned onto here after a brief stint at the 1up boards.

I started reading with the WD boards and posting on Sega's. I still have nightmarish flashbacks of a guy there who could put up a very good argument but was also insane. He was like Hitler, only instead of Jews being the source of all problems his position was Sega is and always has been infallible. Same thing really.

alt.games.final-fantasy.rpg was awesome back in the day, although I didn't post all that much. Sky Render, Stian Mathiasen (?) etc, aaah the memories. Even back then Sky Render (the guy who re-translated FF6) was mostly posting about how much Ted Woolsey sucked :lol
Those were the days :D

Neo-Geo.com board in 2000, which I still post, but not as often.
The Spaceship understands - small board of DQ players about 6 years ago
The Next Level - group of grumpy smartass gamers since 2002
Digital Press - Off and on since 2002
Allakhazam when I played FFXI from 2004-2006

I started on EGM's Nuke (which probably no one here remembers) and Sega.net (before SEGA owned their .com domain). Then I moved on to Dave Z's Sega Saturn Page forum, then Dimension-S, the DC Tech Pages, and Hardcore Gaming, then here.

Started at the Playstation Underground mostly in the off-topic, MGS, and sig boards. I can't remember my username but I can remember I had 10k or more in posting. Haha

Then I move to here GAF, heard it from a friend back in highschool. I was a lurker at first waiting for the admin to except my info to be a member here. I miss the cisco days in HS. Lol

But it doesn't stop here I also visit Maxconsole.net,Beyond3d,MLG,Bungie,and sometimes Epic forums.

So the real question: How did you hear about GAF?

IGN was my first board I went to. It was pretty cool back then. We used to set-up SOCOM matches mostly.

But I think I got turned on to IGN from psxnation.com

I spent most of my teenage years posting on Working Designs official message board (both normal and "hidden" varieties). There were quite a few awesome people on those boards. I was also a huge Saturn fan so rec.games.video.sega was where I spent the rest of my time. Those were the days.

I started on the Gamefaqs message boards but I loved to lurk and post on the Working Designs message boards right up until the end. I remember that it was an ordeal to get the right to post on the WD boards, something like having 25 legit replies in order to post. Anyway, it was a great board to talk RPGs and have good arguments over games. I used to love the stuff written by rpg_critic, I wish the whole WD page was archived. Anyway, I moved onto GAF in 2005 because I heard Vic posted here and several others from the WD board.

I feel dang old for saying rec.games.video.* on Usenet, using a command-line-based newsreader client (either nn or rn, later on to using Pine!) on my university's computer terminals back in the days.

Word :lol

The official Wizardry 8 boards, back when they still were under RPG Vault, before IGN acquired the whole lot, about half a year before it released in the US. That was the first forum I posted on, or maybe even used period. I don't recall even lurking anywhere else prior to that.

Electronic Playground forums around 98' or so.

Loved that place even though it only had like 5 or 6 active members. I got to talk with Vic and Tommy though :)

1up boards unfortunately. But they linked to neo gaf last year in april with that chairman of the board article.

That was when I was 'saved' lol

I actually started on AOL way back. From there I went on to Blast City (Dreamcast forum) and at the same time started posting on Gaming-age.com and have stuck with it every since. Also post at IGN currently (under a different name) btw but not as much as that place gets on my nerves sometimes.

Gamespot for awhile, then I realized I was double the age of the average poster. After that I didn't really have a board, just looked for game news. Saw GAF linked on the-blog-that-shall-not-be-named, and thought to myself, "Shit, if they get half their stuff from this place, I'll just join up there instead."

Right here, a friend pointed me to Gaf back when people first started making custom wallpaper for the PS3 (he applied and still hasn't been approved to post)then i got hooked and a year later I was accepted to the tribe and here I am.

I tried that "The Game Forum" place but, its lame. All the talk about is "where can I get software so I can get games for free" or "I paid for something so I can rip off the industry that helps to provide me with a hobby but I got ripped off"

What is 4chan and why they try to be like it ?
Sorry for my offtopic question.
Its basically the fart of the internet but they are also responsible for a good amount of the meme's that people use. Thats why IGN tries so hard to be like them. They wanna be at the start of something.

I mostly started at Winning Eleven and NCAA Football boards like MaddenMania, OperationSports, Soccergaming, PESgaming. I can't remember how or when I stumbled upon GAF. I became a member a few years ago, though.

I don't even remember that far back. My first experience with the Internet was Web TV (yeah, I know) so it was probably one of their gaming forums. I have posted on this board many years ago, back when I had dial-up and using Windows 98. Oh, those were the (slow) days.

Gamers.com, and the EGM messageboards there - firestar46 is my username.
I became a moderator there, and moved with them to 1up.com where I became an administrator.

Lots of shit happened that killed the forum community there, but there are still really loyal users that still rep hard for the place - particularly in the EGM NGR forums.

I see you jaundicejuice, Uramallas, disappeared, spire, truly101, AZ Greg, and others. :)

Another Fidonet user! Given your time frame, there's a good chance we posted/read at the same time. I was using Fidonet back around 1992-1994.
I wish I could go back and look at my archives from there for old times' sake. I've done that once or twice to see my Dreamcast arguments with Marty Chinn. :D

rec.games.video, 1988. I also used rn from a unix command line. For off campus use, I had an ancient ADM-5 terminal with an external 2400 baud modem I borrowed from my job at the dorm computer lab. Good times. :)

Happy Puppy back in around 2000.
Gamespot back in 2000.
Gaming age early 2000's as well.

Those were just like once every 2 weeks or so I would post.

Then in 2003 I started on IGN, 1UP, PS Forums, nSider Forums, TechIMO

You realize that some on 1up would take it as the ultimate betrayal to see Firestar posting on GAF, but you know all too well what happened there. You tried what you could during reconstruction but eventually you had to come to terms with the fact that the dream is dead.
Also I had to do a doubletake at AZGregs avatar when I saw it was Bret Favre no longer.

First forum I was ever a part of was pc vs console. I used to lurk there, just checking out the conversations about games. I've always loved gaming, but I only really discussed it with people in real life. At least when I was younger. After that, I was hanging out with a crowd that wasn't into gaming, so I started posting on that forum to discuss games with like-minded people. I enjoyed finally being able to get into really deep discussions about games that I could never get into in real life. Shortly after, I started posting occasionally over at EvilAvatar. I then started lurking here, and the super-enthusiasm for gaming here really grabbed me. I haven't looked back since... ;)

1UP back in 2004, but after the merger it became a cesspool of obnoxious kids and a handful of members who basically ran the place. It was too immature and inane, so I quit using them.

I found GAF because of a co-worker. So I signed up for an account but never got approved to post for like a year and 3 months, so I posted at another board. One banned from mentioning here. Still post there now that I can post here too though.

PGamers, when I was wee little young one. Ah...

Now they either don't exist or are dead/owned by someone shitty.
