Gaming Mice-Age

On my old PC setup I used a MX1000 that did its job well for years... the paint wore off at the top and the glide pads went missing. There was a problem with my recharge station too, the contacts didn't connect anymore (probably due to wear&tear). Nonetheless, it's a very sturdy mouse that withstood my abuse for a very long time, and aside from visual blemishes it worked flawlessly.

Right now I'm using a wired run-of-the-mill "Premium Optical Wheel mouse" from Logitech on my PowerMac G5. It's good enough for the occasional WoW stint, but I only use it because it would've been thrown away otherwise. On my current PC I use a Cordless Wheel mouse & keyboard combo from the bargain bin since the MX1000 went MIA when I moved my stuff around after the previous PC blew up. I really need to find it.

The Logitech drivers are/were a pain though. Certain revisions would crash when powering down, others wouldn't switch correctly into game mode or forget the shortcuts assigned to one of the 3 billion buttons - and the UI is pretty clunky IMHO. Setpoint.exe had it out for me, showing a messagebox or crashing always at the most inopportune moments. Even if it ran "normally", sometimes memory leaks would pop up. The whole thing feels messy. Best thing is that the autoupdate hasn't worked even once throughout the last few years. Argh.

To put it bluntly:
Logitech hardware - yay!
Logitech software - kill it with orbital bombardment, and then some.

Always hated the feel of Microsoft mice, to be honest. Currently using a Razer Diamondback, loving it, the sensitivity is perfect for gaming as well as photoshopping. Pondering getting a Deathadder.

I have a G5, good mouse alot better then the razer mouses imo. Though a couple of people i know that have both the G9 and G5 think the G9 is alot better then the G5.

If i was going to buy a new mouse it would be a G9 no questions asked

Same here, I've been using the MX1000 since it was released, the poor mouse is pretty beat up and the charging station it takes forever to perfectly balance it to recharge. :lol

Which mouse should I finally replace my war horse with?

I just replaced my MX1000 which stopped charging when I put it on the base after 4 years use, with a MX Revolution. It was a bit weird for the after a few days of use but now I much prefer it over the MX1000.

I have a G15 keyboard, which I was given, and have only really kept because I'm kinda fond of being able to view the iTunes info on its screen. And...well, now that I have a gaming computer, I'm kind of a whore for the performance monitor. I'm ashamed, but this is off the point.

Point is: I have never once used one of the roughly thirteen million macro buttons on this thing. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make them useful, or, indeed, even how to program the bloody things. The software and online manual are the most useless pieces of fecal horror I have ever come across. It is really quite remarkable how unintuitive this hulking behemoth is.

It's as if just by owning one I should already by so high up in the echelons of computer know-how that explaining it would be wasting not only my time, but the manufacturer's time as well.

Excuse this large picture - apparently, there are no smaller pictures on the internet at all, because its enormity simply cannot be conveyed in standard definition.

logitech g9, zalman fg1000, logitech mx518

I've had pretty much all logitech laser and optical mice ever made. g9 is easily the best logitech of them all. swore by mx518 for a long time but after using the insanely much more comfortable g9..... THIS IS IT. it's very hard to go back to the shape of the mx518 after using g9

zalman fg1000 was a joke purchase, it's a-ok when you get used to it.. but requires too much movement to be useful for precision/speed games (the laser is located at the very end). and that's what it was specifically made for I guess, so it's a bit of a failure. vertical hand position is a huge plus of course

edit: I was fairly happy with the mx900, mx1000, mx revolution when I had these, but they're awful compared to g9 and mx518. huge difference in precision

Zalman is too funny not to post a better picture of. That's bizarre. How much did you pay for it?

I use a Logitech G5, fantastic mouse, and the ability to set game specific sensitivity modes is fantastic, using an M4 in CS and want super twichy sens? thats mode 1, want a super detailed slow mode for AWP snipage at a choke point? mode 2, normal play? mode 3.

The build quality is high, I think newer gen ones have 2 side buttons, which addresses my only complaint with mine, and is a joy to use for browsing, gaming and all round ergonomics too.

I used an MX518 at work today, actually, and it felt really light. It's weird to be saying this, but I can't recommend adjustable weights enough.

They released a new version semi-recently.

It's slimmed down now, and it doesnt have a fuckton of keys on the side of the board. That being said, I might have to dig my old one out of the closet, as it could be really helpful for age of conan.

Yeah, I got mine because of the new one, I think. I mean, they could hardly sell this ugly thing after releasing a vaguely attractive one.

I have the same kb. Nice that the stats are displayed for AoC on the lcd screen. WoW was more in depth, but it was a nice little feature in AoC. And I also find the macros pointless. Only reason I bought the G15 is because it lights up, an important feature for me since I do a lot of late night gaming.

As for a mouse, I just bought an MX518 and I'm digging it.

I was thinking of getting the G5, but I really hated how the mouse feels. I didn't like the texture of the mouse, though I can understand why its there.

For mouse pad, I bought this at Circuit City for $15.

The one I have is similar, but with a carbon fiber finish and gunmetal frame.

I use the new Sidewinder. Before that, Razer. And before that, Logitech.

My keyboard has been the same for 20 years. Model M. The world will never make a keyboard for gaming, typing or anything as good as the original Model M. I should get a buckling spring diagram tattoo.
