Gaming: then vs now, we have come far

Never forget:

And Back to the Future:

Then:

Now:

Most games are dumb now.

There is not real belief that gamers want to be challenged and figure out stuff for themselves.

The only real survivors in the onslaught of stupid are games were the complexity was the main selling point all along like for example some strategy games.

Every single Final Fantasy plotline from back then is better than every single Final Fantasy plotline since XII.

In terms of graphics sure. But in terms of gameplay i wouldn't be so sure.Actually in many cases i think we have gone back...

Didnt know that GTA started with GTA Advance.

Didnt know that CGI is the only way to show the games from now.

The old games from this list are better than the new games.

Reddit, get it right next time.

Plotlines FF VI, VII, VIII, IX are second to none.

Resident Evil 1, 2 or 3 is. on it's own, better than V and VI combined.
RE IV is second to none.

Metal Gear Solid 1 is second to none.
Metal Gear Solid 2 plotline is mostly superior to every other MGS.

Visuals surely increased but not all of the games out there benefited from this trend. Maybe games like Battlefield 4. Watching this trailer gave me huuuuge goosebumps and it wouldn't have been possible without the visuals..

Most of the "Then" games were better.

I suspect the thread was supposed to be about graphics, so nice derail..

Anyway, I took up the challenge and concluded that I'd rather play 7 out of 14 originals right now. Not bad.. Other than that it's all nostalgia.

You need visuals as much as you need plot, gameplay and soundtrack. There is no possible way of saying visuals substitute for those elements of gaming. There needs to be a balance to it. Good looking games can deliver in all other departments. From that perspective I'd say we've come a long way, but we have a lot of room to improve.

Nostalgia aside , whenever I actually go back and play old games I realise they were mostly shit and I'd much rather have modern graphics AND gameplay.

I love modern games and some of the changes they have brought but the sheer unbridled joy i got when i was a kid playing those older games seems, maybe not gone, but different in some way. Tomb raider and Resident evil have certainly changed for the worse while final fantasy is debatable( ix is still my favourtie but i liked xiiii), Metal gear has gotten better over the years no question. I do miss playing those infinity engine games though. I adored thsat type of graphics. Hopefully project eternity will fix that.

Doom 3 is almost 10 years old, that's not exactly "now" anymore. The original Doom will be 20 years old on December 10th 2013. Personally I still think Doom 3 looks pretty good for its age, though the original Doom is the better game still.

Why does everyone forget about Metal Gear NES!?

Because it's a game not worth remembering :P . Honestly, it was a terrible port of the MSX original, even back then.

Well back then the Tomb Raiders had actual good gameplay. Now that the graphics are up to snuff they ditched that dead weight.

She was also raiding tombs back then too...

It feels incredibly difficult separating nostalgia from the reality, with time playing a significant role in hazing memory of the problems old games possessed. It seems natural to have an instant gravitation towards the old games, and while i'm sure that in some instances they were better because gameplay was a focus rather than graphics, modern mechanics add depth that we could only have dreamed of (not that games couldn't be complex before, just that as games have evolved so have some gameplay systems).

I'm still nostalgic about many 8 bit games but i think in almost all cases there are better more modern examples of them....although i'll always love Dizzy and Spellbound.

That's unusually out of character for you.

Nah. It just depends on where you look.

Screen caps only show the evolution of games if all you care for is graphics. A lot of the old games shown in the OP are just as good or even better than their modern representations.

today:

“This difficult decision was made to align Microsoft’s resources with our strategic priorities. Microsoft Flight Simulator X will remain available at retail stores and web retailers, the Flight Sim community will continue to learn from and encourage one another, and we remain committed to the Flight Simulator franchise for the long term.“

“We can confirm the closing of Aces Studios, which was responsible for the Flight Simulator franchise. Following our annual strategy review process, IEB is making adjustments within our business to align our people against our highest priorities. The closure of Aces Studios was one of those specific changes,” said Microsoft Spokesperson Kelda Rericha.

I know Resident Evil 6 is a metric shit ton more fun than Resident Evil 1, that's for sure.

The Mercenaries No Mercy mode is tense and thrilling with spectacular controls, deep combat mechanics, and satisfying gameplay. Resident Evil 1 is a clusterfuck: confusing level progression, technical problems/limitations that serve only to frustrate the player (static camera angles, tank controls, freeze frame transitions that stall reaction times), and horrible boss encounters filled with endless circle strafing and guesswork aiming.

Sure, the campaign might be total Hollywood cheese fest. I don't know, I haven't gotten to it yet. That said, I seriously don't get the people who would give up the super fun gameplay of modern Resi for the agony of old Resi.

That's not the priority when it comes to Resident Evil. It could be a totally different game with it's own title instead of using the Resident Evil name.

DOOM is still the best FPS ever made. I'd even argue that the super shotgun in DOOM II was going too far.

RE1 is king of RE, but Berzerk is the best survival horror.
