If by "the hardcore FF set" you mean "the people who actually liked it when the games were at least hard enough that you couldn't just close your eyes and tap Circle every time a battle came up," then yes. And FFV had that going for it as well. Really, I think the SNES FFs were the best at striking a balance between not requiring insane amounts of power-leveling and not being mind-numbingly easy.
I mean, I'm playing through a fan translation of FFVI again right now, and after not having played it since (I think) beating FFVIII, FFIX twice, and the Dawn of Souls version of FFI, it's like a culture shock that my characters are actually capable of dying if the enemy really focuses its strongest attacks on them. And yeah, I know it gets easier once you can turn everyone into healers, but the early game reminds me more of Dragon Warrior than FFVII and up, and that's a good thing.
