GBA on la DS

Ok, maybe I'm a tard, but I vaguely remember there being some sort of option to choose what screen the game is played on. Being forced to look at the top screen is suck. Hell, I'd rather the top screen not exist at all.

I purposely set my GBA games to play on the top screen. Much better way for me.

where exactly are you gonna run to? DS fans are everywhere now :)

I think Nintendo makes a product similar to the one you seem to be describing.

Top screen should be the better choice for all console games on the go people. It's like a seperate TV and controller in a way, wheeeeee!

Top screen for everything except Wario Wario Twisted, that's much better played on the bottom screen, the twisting feels much more natural when it's centered between your hands... Anyone know how it plays on the Micro? Is the bulky cart size a problem?

Eh, playing on the top screen leaves a giant hole in the bottom that's far too distracting for me. And while there's also blankness when playing bottom, I've already been trained by most DS games to ignore the topscreen.

I think the top screen gives slightly better colors and image quality due to the extra protection layer on the bottom screen which makes it a bit dimmer, but only slightly IMO.

it plays great on the micro. though I think it's fine on ds too.

As others have mentioned, you change this in the OS options menu.

I like the top screen better. It doesn't have that annoying grainy "film" for the touchscreen covering it, so the image is much clearer, IMO.

I don't suppose theres any way to map A and B to X/Y eh?
Not that I know of. Maybe there's a homebrew hack for this. Can't tell you how many times I wish I could make Y the B button, and B and A button. It would make most GBA games so much more comfortable to play on the DS.

Agree x 10

It's this issue that has me getting a Micro.

I tried playing GBA games on the DS but it just doesn't feel right to me. Long live the SP and micro! :D

I'm hoping that a DS revision makes GBA compatibility much better. Neither the top screen nor bottom screen do it for me.

Yeah, a button remapping feature is sorely needed for GBA playback on the DS. I'd especially like to be able to map the L & R buttons to the face buttons as well. Hopefully there will be a firmware update that accomplishes this, at the very least there's no reason it can't be done with the upcoming "DS SP" hardware revision.

Yeah, I did the same thing (picked up the Fami Micro last week along with FFIV). It's damn near impossible to play the Mega Man Zero games with the DS's A&B button placement.

I've had problems with Mario 3, Zero Mission, Superstar Saga... pretty much everything I've played on it. But I can't go back to my NESP's hideous frontlit screen. So, they forced me into a Micro. FF4-6 were the kickers.

I hate Nintendo for this.

I gotta agree, their 'almost perfect but not *quite*' design is maddening

They do so much right, then fuck up some other aspect

They do it on purpose. I can't wait for DS SP to make my Micro useless.

Let's hear more about that Costco bundle!

I can't wait for the DS SP! Hopefully they put the screens closer together. Still keeping my original DS and GB Micro though.

I think putting the screens closer together would mess some games up (Sonic Rush, Metroid Pinball, maybe YT&G).

Costco deals! It's not on their site!

I expect the DS SP to have smaller screens (and smaller unit altogether), but crisper like the Micro's.

i think you are may be right, but not that much smaller or the touch screen would be far to "jumpy" once the pixels get too close...

I personally expect the next gen DS to have a high resolution widescreen on top, and an identical touch panel on the bottom for backward compatabilty.

Man, I just went back to old GBA from playing DS all day and jesus mine has to be broken or something. The colors are so washed out, I can barely see anything. I might be getting a damn micro after all :/

It's not much of a bundle, to tell you the truth. It's basically an $89 bundle that includes just the GBM (silver or black with the two included faceplates) and an accessories bundle that I'd sell on eBay the moment I bought it. Checked real quick, and you can sell it on eBay for $10-$15 + shipping, so it brings the GBM cost down to about $75-80 after everything's said and done.

Personally, the J-whore in me wants the import Famicom version, although that damn near adds 50% to the price, which even for me, is a lot to pay for something that will only play my GBC games. This is what makes the new backlit SP tempting, but the SP has always been the most uncomfortable GB for me to hold and play (it's an ergonomic nightmare).

Okay, never mind the bundle.

Why do you want the Famicom version? Just by the US version, it's the same damn thing. What I really want is the FF4 version, that looks awesome.

I'd get a backlit SP, but its only ten dollars cheaper, isn't as nifty, and doesn't have screen protection. And I'd feel stupid buying another SP. Even though it has a nicer screen, and isn't a special edition (so I don't have to worry about banging it up), I'd feel like it's the same old shit. So, Micro it is. I hope it's not uncomfortable.

IMO, the Micro is the most comfortable GB since the original GBA. The SP is really uncomfortable, and the DS is too heavy for extended periods of use. Like others have said, the ultimate would be a shrunk-down, lighter version of the DS with mappable buttons, or at least a few selectable layouts. A better d-pad and buttons like the Micro would also be most welcome.

What about the shoulder buttons? I never liked them on the first GBA. DS is the best, with those.

I found the SP to be more comfortable than DS for GBA games. I really don't have a problem with it at all, except for the way I have to hold it to look at it.

There are differences. Are they minor? Depends on who you ask. :)

Shoulder buttons on the GBM are OK... not nearly as good as the older ones. You may also want to try one first to see if you like the Start/Select button placement.

I can deal with Start/Select, since I was fine with thumbstrapping in SM64DS. Similar awkward stretch.

I've gotta have one, the die is cast.
