GCW Zero - new retrogaming open source handheld!

Black or White :s?

black doesn't show off how dirty your hands are in a week by changing the colour of the unit. Or if the cheap soft chinese plastic is used in the grip... :D

i mean look at my iPhone with the cheap chinese "white" plastic, turns brown within a month!

compared to the white shell underneath it.

I went with white, my buddy is getting black and my vita is also white so keeping it the same as always. So very excited for this to come out :)

I've gone black too, tempted by white but it'll be handled so much I don't want any dirt or marks to show up easily like they would with white.

Looks interesting, I've already had handhelds like this in the past. So unless this can do something extra(emulation wise), I think I will pass.

I went with the black one. I can't wait to get it.

I missed the email on Friday, and I got another one this morning that said "Need Response Now!"

It kind of freaked me out.

They pretty much double the specs of the last sort of platforms of its ilk, it will likely be able to do near perfect PSX emulation and quite possibly N64 in the future.

Just curious but can this play video files via memory stick?

Well I think someone else stated something similar but it just doesnt offer enough for me. I got all the psx games out of my system with my cracked psp3000

Now N64 is nice...and if we ever get something that can do portable ps2.

Just got the new Kickstarter Update #23 email!.... GCW Weather Proof Carrying Cases.....

I really do not see the point of this, and to me is a complete waste of time. I would have much preferred he spent R&D in a game grip for the device to make longer game play sessions more bearable

He didn't "R&D" these. They're just knockoff Pelican style cases he found that are the right size. If he spent more than an afternoon on it I'd be surprised.

what do you mean? As long as we get what we pledged for I don't see how we got scammed...

Also I wonder why they would want to do that at all...

I'm not saying we are being scammed, but the fact that he's trying to raise more money suddenly for something like the ATari brand name seems like he's tugging on people's nostalgia strings in order to raise some cash for something that is somewhat pointless to do, and honestly he probably won't be able to achieve if he raises the funds. Add on the fact that we haven't even gotten our units yet, and suddenly there's a request for more cash to bring the total up to almost half a million, and it could sound like a scam.

Add to that the fact that they are already talking about the NEXT hardware revision:

Atari Classic Gaming + GCW: The Future
Our immediate goal is to retain the brand and intellectual property rights around Atari’s classic games so that we can re-invigorate those titles. Our first venture toward this goal will be re-launching them using the GCW platform. There are lots of other possibilities.
GCW Handheld with Atari Games. We want to bring you back to your childhood sitting in your living room playing your favorite Atari games from years gone by. Spark that innocence from your childhood and make you relive it again.
The Next Generation Atari Console - By GCW. Dual Core MIPS or ARM Quad Core processor at least 1.5GHz or higher per core. 1GB ram or higher, and multi touch Retina IPS display, responsive dual analog controls, responsive dpad, four shoulder buttons. Six actual control buttons. (This will be a console in the future 2015 or later with compareable hardware to that time period.)

Sounds like the Osborne Effect to me.

Also, some of the "Atari" games they want to acquire and mention in the video are Namco and Activision properties.

And a quarter of a mil to acquire all of Atari?! Give me a break...

The guy is either totally ignorant as to how IP rights work and how much they cost or this is a scam.

Well I think Im like most backers in that I don't plan on donating anymore till I get my unit(s) also hes mentioned the next device long before this on the dingoonity forums.

I don't fault him for wanting to keep this momentum but I have no idea about this whole buying the rights to atari deal. If I like the GCW enough and the specs of the next system seem worth it then ill back it, just like many others probably will.

Unless there is anything else that am missing I don't really see it as a scam... unless we had to donate more to get our pledge items. Seems as if hes moving forward, maybe a bit early but this is his business.

That new console he says for the future is looking at 2015 or later release? Doesn't seem so bad.

Just want to get my hands on this hardware!

Has a kind of tacky design and logo to my tastes.

While the Linux thing is great. I don't think this will do well at all.

I'd like for Linux systems to do well. I just don't hold out any hope for this. The Vita is already struggling. I cannot possibly imagine a non-Nintendo handheld even breaking in at this point. Much less an unheard of handheld.

Seems you don't understand the point of this device. I'm guessing you've never owned an indie handheld, or been part of a homebrew handheld scene? Entirely different world. It is not trying to compete with Sony or Nintendo. Nor is it expected to make a lot of money.

As for the Atari thing... let's just say I would prefer if GCW would concentrate all their energy on getting the Zero consoles produced, tested and shipped.

From the Kickstarter page:

Justin Barwick

The time for this possible upgrade to happen would have been while the KickStarter was still going on and before we started production and ordered the current LCD we are using.

I'm thinking more like an upgrade where if you want the 640x480 screen you send it in we replace it for you for a small fee after we have normalized from shipping early adopters and Kickstarter orders and are doing retail sales.

It is still pretty kewl in the end that a LCD manufacturer sought our project out and is willing to make us a custom LCD Display it gives validity to the project that we are on the right path and being accepted by big manufacturers as a valid worth while product.

Good that they're getting it out and worrying about the upgraded screen later.

Honestly, Justin needs to stop posting unless its about shipping updates. I'm cringing at everything else he's doing here.

"Spitballing" about a potential 640x480 screen in public is a bad idea.

Yup, transparency isn't always a good thing. Save it for the next revision.
On the subject of the clone though, it does give me hope that we might see a half decent ps1 emulator on the gcw since as far as I know there aren't any that are particularly well optimised for mips systems.

It looks like they've announced their first emulators:

Drum Roll Please..... Announcement time the long awaited news we are now licensed for The C-64 and Amiga Computers as an emulator via licensing for the bios. We are also licensed for numerous software titles on both computers. Still more licensing news too come in near future....

Well, it looks like the screen and Atari things are a bust:

From the GCW Zero Kickstarter page:

The upgrade will not be happening as I said before the time for that has come and passed but it does mean the GCW One, will more then likely have a bunch of surprise as component manufactures are now embracing us.
It saddens me to say this but I'm moving in a different direction with this vision and cancelling the Reset Atari rewards raise.
I had hoped retro gamers from all communities would have pounced on this opportunity to save the heritage and legacy of Atari.
I'm not done with this fight just moving in another direction with it to achieve the same GOAL.
Wish me luck with this venture and hopefully if it works out you will see the new Atari I spoke and dream of in the near future.
Vr,
Justin
PS: Long live Atari and Long live Retro-Gaming..

Good, now just get the thing out already and we'll go from there.

Oh good god, I can't stand it over at Dingoonity anymore. The GZW thread over there has turned sour.

Great interview BTW.

I can't say I blame them. They missed their ship date whilst talking about upgrades and a new machine that will blow the Zero out of the water. I know Justin wants to bring back the old Atari but I didn't think he'd emulate the shitty business practices that killed them first time around!

It wasn't so long ago that it was doubtful they'd even hit their original goal so it would be nice to see a bit of humility.
