GDC: Crytek’s Coy On Console Crysis

LiveWire said:
I'm a huge console nut, and the amount of detail (literally MILES of perfectly rendered terrain with no "invisible boundaries") in Crysis is uncomparable to anything on a console (hell, even most other PC games). It's just night and day. Now if they could just add a competent physics engine and AI that isn't completely stupid.... :D

Are you seriously trying to say crysis does not have good AI or physics engine?

that wasn't the problem

Oh you mean the "house of cards" shacks? Or how about the stupid soldier AI?

This is what happened after I got spotted with my optic camo off and scrambling around trying to re-cloak and getting shot and spotted again---instead of maintaining order while I was cloaked again and trying to scour the forest to track me, they end up walking all over each other like cockroaches:

I mean, don't get me wrong, it makes it easier for me to kill them: :lol

But really, it's laughable compared to something even as old as Halo.

I'll grant you the AI is weird. I've had entire levels where they'd keep me on my toes the whole time, behaving just as they should, while other times they've done some pretty illogical things. They are NOT, however, "completely stupid," to use your description.

As far as the physics go, I'm honestly shocked you consider them anything less than amazing and certainly surprised you'd go so far as to call them incompetent. What game has a better physics engine than Crysis? More importantly, what specific beef do you have with Crysis'?

I love Crysis, having loads of fun with it. But I'm not gonna blow sunshine up its ass and ignore its faults if I'm going to be objectively assessing it.

People who say Uncharted is better graphically than Crysis are overlooking the sheer strength of global detail CryEngine 2 brings to the table. At the same time, people who cry foul when someone calls it FarCry 1.5 are missing the point of that remark--the developer's REAL talent is graphic development, not AI or physics (or storyline). Not downplaying their achievements, but it's not a GIANT step away from "I'M GONNA SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE!" :lol

Anyway, I hope it makes it to the consoles because more people should play it. Although, thinking back on PC gaming history, it seems to me like it's not nearly as expensive to build a powerful PC to play Crysis today (a few months after release) as it was to build a PC powerful enough to play Doom 3 a few months after its release.

People don't seem to understand that a sandbox games will never, ever, have flawless AI.

Bitch costed me a 9800 PRO >:(

Do you have the AI turned to High or Very High? ;)

Seriously, just load up a game and try it. Let yourself be spotted, then move a little bit and hide behind a tree and re-cloak. Rinse and repeat once or twice, and watch as the AI completely falls apart.

Same here, I said it in another thread, I can't recall a time in PC gaming history (except maybe the Voodoo 2 days) where it's been easier to just buy a CPU/GPU (for relatively cheap) and be pretty much guaranteed that you're getting the best bang for the buck.

"Blow sunshine up its ass and ignore its faults"

Dude, I don't have any problem with criticizing games intelligently, even games I love, but considering Crysis' physics above competent is hardly overlooking its flaws. (You want to criticize Crysis? Take aim at the second half- I'll be right there with you.) Personally, I think the physics engine is the best one I've ever seen in a game and I can't fathom how someone would consider it a decent, much less a flaw.

Oh, it's pretty bad at times. I've had KPA get stuck on walls just standing in place yelling out. And yeah, once you cloak they won't see you until you fire on them again. I've seen them move to my former location, and a few times I've seen them fire on my former location, but most of the time they just search for you and end up dead.

Hell, I've even had a soldier run away from me and I had to chase him down.

"Get back here, you little shit."

But for the most part, it's pretty good. And comparing it to "old Halo" is disingenuous as Halo
has amazing AI.

But the physics are really top notch.

Just like Far Cry, I've come to realize that the tech behind these games are much more impressive than the games themselves.

LOL at people think Uncharted "corridors with pretty trees on the side" beats Crysis "miles of open-ended terrain where you can go anywhere", on medium or any detail setting
the jokes on you...crysis medium certainly doesn't look more impressive...on high it does
Yeah, and you can put a 3ft by 3ft by 3ft room on the Wii and make it look better than any PC game on the market. Who the fuck cares? We're talking about overall size and scope here, not what screenshots look like. If you're on tight corridors with limitations on where you move, of course you can make something look beautiful - mostly because it's so much easier to fake things off in the distance.

Apples to oranges.

You're comparing the AI between one game that has to consider exponentially more variables than the other. No shit what's essentially still a corridor shooter (with a few glorified vistas) has more reliable AI.

There is no open world sandbox game with AI that doesn't screw up like that. Zero. Simply because there are too many chances to fail yet.

Agreed 1000% with sucky AI and average physics (amongst the most buggy i saw).

That said ,t i don't expect for a second ,that people ignoring game code developpement to understand how Physics in Crysis aren't very good at all.

People might stop ignoring you if you wrote coherently.

While I can't deny that Crysis AI is incredibly buggy, and that it certainly detracts from the experience, bugginess != stupid AI.

I mean stupid ,yes. The buggy part was more in regard to physics.

But probably people think it's normal Korean behavior to look for you the other way while your are 3ft behind him throwing bullets on his back.

Or sitting in place playing stupid dialogs while his helmet just got pulled of .

I had some good laughs , some real challenge (by provinking quantities ),but at one time i stopped playing the game the way it was meant to play (that is :serioulsy)

Seing your avatar , i should probably burn as an herectic , i guess :)

Seriously, I can't understand half of what you're trying to say.

On topic, Now that GDF is over, did anyone report on the console cryengine demo?

Uncharted Defense Force is pretty pathetic, *sigh*.

Good fellas outside of any Crysis or Uncharted thread though.

they said the engine on consoles looks better than pc medium settings, but i don't think they refer to the engine handling those environments, with the same freedom and scale.
