My fault then. It just seems like the majority of your posts lately are smarmy wario64-esque trolls.

a world where you can't troll molyneux and fable is a world i don't want to live in

even though i'd generously give that game a 4 out of 5

That's awfully generous.

Plus Peter Molyneux has promised to reveal a totally unexpected feature in Fable 2.
And, just to raise up expectations, I remember you what Petey told about this: "This is a feature so incredible that If I simply tell you about it, you won't believe me. You have to see it to believe."

We'll see :)

LOL.

But seriously, while I may not agree with all of IGA's views...let's be honest, we don't have too many "defenders of the 2D genre" left. And short of some one more possibly more capable like Shigeru Miyamoto, Keiji Inafune (Rockman), Atsushi Inaba (Viewtiful Joe), any one from Treasure and/or etc. speaking on the same matter instead, he's all we got. Let's hope he doesn't blow this opportunity...

I personally cannot wait to hear what amazing feature Molyneux will inevitably cut from Fable 2 before it reaches store shelves.

But yeah, all those talks sound awesome. Are there any sites that do comprehensive summaries of GDC presentations?

As a veteran of many GDCs, I have to say that developers tend to talk about how cool their games are instead of anything interesting. And of course there's always Will Wright with his "look what you could be doing if you had unlimited budget and creative freedom from your publisher, too bad I'm the only person in the world who has that, so everything I'm talking about is not even remotely applicable to you" presentations. And everyone's all like, "WOW, someone who's not working on a soul-draining sequel or licensed game! *clapclapclap*"

I don't even go to the sessions anymore. It's useful for the deal-making in the rickety back rooms of the booths though.
Game deals, you perverts.

Iga isn't really a defender of 2D but rather a Castlevania producer who has never managed to get his team to make a decent 3D entry. Granted his team knows how to make good 2D Castlevania games but they've never really made anything else (not to my recollection anyway).

Wasn't VJ 2.5D?

I wish someone like Komiya would show up and talk about things like building a sensible moveset/controls or a top-tier FPS developer would demonstrate how to properly lay out a level... I'm not all that interested in a particular tech that isn't shown in a gameplay applicable manner.

Game deals, you perverts.

Damn.

Still, it can't be argued that 2D is where IGA and his crew make their bread n butter. So again, aside from some one else more credible giving the lecture, he will do.

And yes, VJ was 2.5D; nevertheless, it still did more to adhere to 2D style of play, rather than to actively use 3D graphics as just a means to cover it up. Fits right into the same boat as Mischief Makers, in my opinion.

I wonder what Iga is going to talk about.

I don't necessarily think Inaba or Kamiya is a defender of 2D even though they made VJ, Kamiya was probably just in a 2D side-scrolling mood at the time, I'm still amazed how well he understood each of the genres his games were in.

I'm already registered, so I'll definitely be there unless something major happens. It'll be the perfect time for job hunting anyways. :D

The job fair thing at GDC is a joke, prepare to have you resume/reel submitted in a pile of thousands not all too diefferent from Siggraph. I'd set up interviews like now for GDC if your really serious.

I really enjoyed last year's GDC. I met a lot of cool people and some Industry Folks. I didn't really find the Sessions to interesting unfortunately. However, i'm sure as hell am gonna go to the Suda Goichi and Keiichi Yano sessions.

Hmm, how would you go about doing that?

Damn that's a nice list. I'd really like to go to GDC, but when you add the cost of a plane ticket and a hotel it gets pretty pricey.

The IGDA should really consider having the GDC alternate between San Fran and Vancouver so that more game developers are able to go. I mean really, there well over 12 game developers in Vancouver and at least that many if not more in nearby Seattle, including Microsoft and Nintendo. There are lots of video game related companies that do services for developers in the area too.

If anything Vancouver/Seattle makes more sense than San Francisco.

I really want to go one year :(

Location doesn't seem to be much of a problem. Look out how many presenters MS is sending. 30+. Sony seems to be sending a bunch too. Though Nintendo is sending, what, three? I wish they'd let some Retro guys talk.

If Shigeru Miyamoto is the Steven Spielberg of videogames, Koji Kondo is the John Williams. As one of the industry's most highly regarded composers, Kondo has composed timeless pieces that help bring Nintendo's stories to life through music. Starting with Super Mario Bros. in 1985 to the recently released The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Kondo has continuously redefined the definition of a game soundtrack.

During this in-depth session, Kondo illustrates how his method of composing interactive music is unique by dissecting various examples of sounds and music from the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda series. Although the art and science of videogame music has changed dramatically during the last 20 years, his work has remained consistent and allows Nintendo's musical soundtracks to soar. Learn what inspires Kondo to create musical masterpieces as epic as the tales they accompany.

Eiji Aonuma's work on The Legend of Zelda series dates as far back as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been the team's most ambitious game to date and for the first time since its release, Aonuma reflects on its evolution and how it prepared him to take on the challenge of his current mission: Phantom Hourglass.

Aonuma explains the development team's formidable task of progressing the epic franchise across multiple generations of Nintendo systems. This is a rare opportunity to learn behind-the-scenes development challenges and triumphs from Link's latest installments.
sounds awesome!! :)

...and maybe more phantom hourglass info! :D

wasn't phantom hourglass first revealed at gdc last year by iwata?

Well I would narrow it down to what companies you want to work for that are going to be there.

Next i would contact their HR dept asking to set up an interview.

I once interviewed at GDC but never heard back from the company.

At the same time I dropped my reel of at the job fair there and I don't think I heard back from a single company.

I.....Like most people had a difficult time breaking into the industry. My best advise is to just be persistant. But as a person who attended GDC with the full intent of getting employed I felt i must chime in on the job fair situation there.

If you or anybody else have any specific questions about getting into the industry want to PM me specific questions PM me I'll be glad to answer. I know the struggle ;)

GDC is always my favorite event of the year, and this one's looking to have one of the best lineups I've ever seen. Geez it's going to be a great one. I can't wait.

I like the idea that so many members of GAF arrange to get togther at events like these, it really brings home a nice sense of community on here...
unless there is some darker motivation to get together....perhaps the Dreamcast 2009 plans are gathering pace? :D

I had a look at the list of speakers and attendees this year and Naughty Dog seem to have a large presence this year. Presumably they are going to make a big deal out of their 'untitled' project.

Wasn't it GDC last year where Phil Harrison first showed the Ratchett and Clank demo? Wonder what we'll get this year?

EDIT - My guess for the big FABLE 2 announcement?
The game will be an episodic download rather than a disc based retail game or .... it's an MMO

we're not really sure he's going to be talking about the same feature are we? i mean he's mentioned wanting to reveal several different new features.

he might just reveal that it'll take longer than 10 hours to beat ;)

Koji Kondo on interactive music.
Heh, a lesson on HOW not to do it...

Honestly, I look forward to hearing what he has to say, but the interactive music present in the new Zelda was beyond annoying...

A couple years ago I saw a presentation on interactive music, and Michael Land was one of the speakers. That was a much more appropriate choice. It's tough to think of many better examples of really great dynamically generated music than Monkey Island 2's soundtrack.

Oh shit I'm sorry, I thought we first met at E3 not GDC. That's right I remember. We had a little group together wondering what to do while I was trying to convince Jaffe to come hang out with us (he was too busy hanging out with CliffyB :( ).

So help me god Gaz, that's it I'm not taking care of you when you're stinking drunk.

I REALLY want to set up some sort of NeoGAF meetup considering how the party scene is going to be all over the place this year.

I'm talking about attendants, not presenters.

I'm sure they can fill up the place with attendants in San Francisco, but maybe just to be nice, the IGDA should also consider the other major hub of video game development every other year.
