I take it that Take-Two is pumping a lot of money into them.

Well, Battleborn took basically the entire studio, and if they want to run that brand and Borderlands, they need more staff.

More details from GI.biz

A representative said the new studio's first task will be leading development on "a new game within one of Gearbox's currently held IP's."

"As part of our strategy we have already successfully built an expanded all new headquarters in Frisco, Texas," Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said. "We now look ahead to another key and exciting step which is our commitment towards our all-new Gearbox Studio Quebec where we strive to team up with some incredible talent in the world of video game development outside of Texas to help us build fun and exciting video games within our tent-pole brands."

Gearbox has named two co-studio heads to get the new operation up and running: Pierre-Andre Dery and Sebastian Caisse, Ph.D. In addition to the shared studio head roles, Dery will be the studio creative director, and Caisse will be the director of operations.

Dery was most recently an art director at Activision, working on titles like Skylanders: Swap Force, Skylanders: Trap Team, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Prior to that, he was COO and executive producer at Volta, a visual services studio that has provided concept art for dozens of AAA console titles, including Uncharted 2, Halo 4, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Dery also spent a decade as a comic artist working with publishers like Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse Comics.

Caisse has joined Gearbox from Squeeze Studio Animation, where he was a writer and business development manager. While Squeeze has worked on various video game trailers, Caisse also has more direct ties to gaming through a stint as business development director of Quebecor Media's BlooBuzz casual game studio.

Wow, so many studios now in Québec (Québec city + Montréal). Its starting to be a center of attention for videogames.

Yeah, the last ten years have been crazy! I saw video game studios popping up everywhere in the city! Firsts that come to my mind are Ubisoft, Beenox and Frima...now we have Gearbox! :D

I think Montreal have quite a lot of studios as well.

The Quebec government has stated many times that it aims to become America's second Silicon Valley. It gives hefty subventions to tech companies to try and attract them. Seems like it's working quite well.

As long as Randy Pitchford never steps foot into my country I'm down for this.

Those BC, Quebec and Ontario tax breaks for tech companies are paying off.

Was wondering what was up with this after the Battleborn thread. Their Linkedin says they have 51-200 people (lol which is it?), they've been posting jobs for people with UE4 experience and have been tweeting pics of their employees in their offices. Previously it was said:

After the failure of BB and BiA not being a priority it has got to be BL. Or I wonder if they could help out with BL3. Gearbox needs a success again.

Its much easier for LinkedIn and companies to report a "tier" of employees rather than to keep changing it to a specific number. So they probably wont' ever say which/what number it is. At least I don't think they will
