Gears is the most progressive game series currently ongoing.

I'm so shocked people take the time to notice this shit when playing games. Amazed.

I'm white, and never realised over the years until someone on another forum pointed it out, that I almost always have avatars with black people in them.

I'm amazed people still see the colour of the person this day in age, as opposed to seeing the person for what they are.

I pick characters to play in a game based on how cool I think they look or their attributes as a character. Not sure how their colour would matter whether they're all white, or mixed.

Funny thing is, the blakc characters have almost always been the best ones in the games I played over the years.

Streets of Rage? Hello?

Best thing about that juice thing is when Dom tells Cole to stop it with something like "don't start with that juice shit again" :lol

I like you. I loved Heavy Metal. Bought a new GFX card for it at the time. Had to hide the box from my mum.

I hope you're black because I'm not. We could be as progressive as Gears.

I only ever played it at my cousin's place. My parents would have killed me. :lol

But compare that to Pokémon where you don't just play as a boy or girl, but as a mouse, dragon, washing machine, horse, ball, magnet, plant, ghost, squirrel, turtle, another plant...

I don't find it terribly progressive or even slightly realistic when games, television shows, or movies have a band, squad, group, or whatever represent every single race. It seems any time there is a movie or show starring a group of people there has to be the white guy, the black guy, the asian guy, the hispanic, and then the female, just to make sure they catch every demographic in there to increase ratings. Lately they've been trying to throw a gay guy in there for good measure as well.

They mask it as progressive, when it really is for maximum audience appeal and ratings, and all it does is look really fake and stupid.

Another plant gave an Oscar worthy performance IMO.

Just as the game your avatar is based on forces you to assemble a merry posse even more diverse than a Benetton ad?

:p

Sometimes it can be forced. But if it's done organically it makes the whole thing that much better.

The Alien series.
The Thing (hell most of John Carpenter's catalog)
The Shield
The Wire

Just a little diversity can go a long fucking way.

I've heard the argument on this board in regards to this series(Swear to God not making this up):

It makes no sense to have Mexicans or black people on other planets.

So as forced as some people say it is, I'll take it and appreciate it.

Not sure what's meant by "progressive" as such, but I felt the GTA games had original and not necessarily two dimensional characters, at least with GTA: SA. I think that was the first game I played where the lead character was black. Actually no. I played Shadowman before that. Still seems pretty rare, too.

:lol what do sales numbers have to do with being progressive? Hell, these days if you sell a ton and you're not called "Wii ______" you are likely a pretty conservative title like Gears or COD :P

Damn, man, don't be so sensitive. It's alright to notice the color of someone's skin. In fact, I'd say you're crazy if you DON'T remember at least that physical trait about someone, since it's usually the most recognizable.

I have seen many stupid things on Gaf, but I have never seen that.

But for arguments sake, if it was a group of White's/Black's/Asian's that left earth and colonized a planet, then it would stand to reason that the other races don't exist because they wheren't there in the original settlement.

Other then the argument of who settled on the planet, I can't honestly believe that someone on this board flat out said that Black's/Hispanic's/Asian's shouldn't exist in the gears universe.

That has nothing to do with being progressive.

It absolutely does. It can be the most progressive game in the world but if it's not in anybody's console, handheld, or pc, who gives a shit?

But having playable women(in a game and setting like this) might be the ballsiest thing I've seen a developer do. She's not in a powersuit, or some piece of armor where the only thing letting you know she's a woman is her voice. It's actually kind of cool.

Isn't that the opposite of being progressive? I mean all the guys wear power armor because its a war in space and they need the protection. But the woman has some naked parts and a tight suit because well its a woman. Shouldnt she be just as protected? No because this appeals to gamers.

It can be the most progressive thing ever, but if it hasn't sold millions it's actually not progressive. Riiiiiiiiight.

Well, in his defense, she is pretty well protected and none of the other characters wear sleeves either.

when you first play gears, after taking in the artwork, taglines and the general stench of cologne drenched 'roid shrunken scrotum that wafts out from every facet of the games promotion, you think "this is cliffy b playing paul verhoeven, this is video-game's starship troopers". a loving, self parodying chastisement of its own generic medium.

it takes about fifteen minutes for any such delusions to melt away and you to accept it for the nerd-inferiority-complex simulator it is.

Stop thinking about NPD's and start thinking about how many people will experience it. If game A with generic white space marine is all anyone's ever playing, do you really think developers will jump at the chance to create something with a non-white, multi-layered protagonist or cast in general?

Umm, I'm not.

This guy is claiming Gears is the most progressive game series ever.

But you're claiming that it doesn't matter if another game is more progressive because Gears probably sold more than it. Which is weird since this thread has all of jack to do with sales.

That guy you probably had stay back with the nuke in ME1 because you didn't know who the hell he was and that other guy who hangs out in the weapons storage place in ME2?

Ohhhhh, those guys.

But wait, I let that guy get away from the nuke because he wasn't Space Racist.

Wait..
How do we know Dom is "chicano" (which as far a I know, is for Mexicans that were born/live in Chicago)??

Was it confirmed in the games?

Yeah but we are already seeing a ton of games that have diffferent racial/sexual characters in a wide variety of roles.

Mirror's Edge - Main character Female/Asian
FF XIII - Lead Character Female, Black man strongest back story and awesome character in his own right and is a major party member from the very beginning.
Gears - Cole, Dom
Killzone - Rico and other character that aren't white.

I don't see where you are getting that main stream games don't have diversity. Granted we don't have a ton of black men as main characters, and as much as they need roles so do Hispanics/Russians/ Germans who are not evil nazi's.

Actually that is something I would like to see, a German playing the lead role and painted in a good light and not the next 10-15 games where people are all like KILL NAZI.
