lol. No, no one is looking for forgiveness, MyGEN has done nothing wrong. Other Australian sites received the same press release.

A Gears of War update should start pushing through the system at some point tomorrow, Tuesday January 9, 2007 prior to the two new multiplayer maps being available on Xbox Live Marketplace on Wednesday January 10, 2007. Here is a list of what was addressed in this update:

• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM
• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance
• Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly and prevent scroll bars from hiding quality of service icons
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points
• Added additional cheat detection code
• Additional housekeeping updates

Chainsaw bug and Voice Chat were my concerns and I'm glad they got quickly addressed. The reduction of grenade tag distance is a nice way of balancing that thing. It was a bit much.

Can't count the number of times that I join a game and everyone as a stranger works together to beat the team of all friends requesting everyone get over to one side so they can all work together.

But go play Halo 2.

I can see lots of bitching about this, but YAY!

Really? Frag tagging is what everyone is/was complaining about on their forums. I think we'd see way more bitching if they didn't address it.

In any case, I'm happy. :D

What does it mean when it says "to match Warzone"? I presume this means you can only get up X number of times, but that's about all I understand.

Changes look good. Don't know what they'll do to ranked play, but I rarely play with people I know, so those issues aren't a big deal to me (and will conceivably help balance teams). I foresee uproar over this, but I'm torn over whether it's a bad thing or not.

I don't take the game that seriously, but there are occasions when I get a little grumpy after playing on an unco-ordinated team of guys who only want to chainsaw against a well-oiled execution squad for the fifth straight time. (Don't get me wrong, the game is best when you're playing with people you know, but IMO that also means when the teams are relatively balanced).

EDIT: I also think the game did already try to prevent players from "finding" each others' matches. I occasionally play with my brother, and we'd have a hell of a time finding a server that would show up for both of us, unless we went to a format that only yielded a small number of results (in the end, we found some regulars to play with, who I presume may go to player matches now... and that's fine by me... I don't need ranking points)

Eh, that would only really make sense if rankings were based on teams rather than individuals. If they introduce clans, then it would make a lot more sense to co-ordinate teams in ranked matches. The change looks to prevent one team having an unfair advantage of knowing each other and formulating strategies before a game starts.

Point whores would knock the opponent down, wait for him to get up just to knock him down again to up their score with # of downs. And in a 10 minute ranked match, this gets OLD.
 
Hehe, nice to see reduced distance for grenade tag. Although I tend to grenade tag myself from time to time, I still consider it kind of game-breaking. I mean, I could grenade tag all the time and probably win a lot more, but I realize it's not really fun to play that way.

Will be interesting to see just how reduced it is. But I would rather see them treat grenade tags like the chainsaw, I mean you need the chain saw up and running before actually can use it, and if you're shot even once you have to restart it. Would be a lot better if they did something similar with grenades.
 
The Gears of War thread must break 10,000 posts with this news. :)

I cannot wait. This will definitely cut into my playtime with LP (if not eliminate it entirely).

It's an unfair advantage. If there was a way to match up two teams, I'd be all for it, but as it is, only one party gets to be a team and the other is made up of strangers, which if you're playing solo, can really suck.

They just need to add team versus.
 
Was just about to post this - damn it!

Well, looks like they addressed every single problem, so the whiners can stop complaining now - nice...

I also used to play with friends in Ranked matches, but it's fine with me not being able to find friends as easy as long as no one else can find theirs as well...

Very solid patch that got everything in one go in record time (not including getting cleared for release by MS) - take note EA...
 
Sounds like most major issues have been fixed. Seems like a lot of you guys are glossing over the "Removed host name from Ranked match server browser" change though. Wasn't the number 1 request for this game for it to have a better match making system especially in regards to ranked games? That's a real weird one.

But yeah on whats left of the plus side if you're trying to find a random ranked game at least it more likely wont be you and strangers vs 3-4 assholes that play with each other all the time.

Yeah I've left more rooms when I see they are waiting for more people to join so they can switch sides. I'm kinda happy about this one. I'd rather a new playlist get created thats just Versus Team Ranked. It would make things nice and easy.

Yeah, the lobby system for Gears doesn't do the title justice. The patch should help a bit, but it should still be easier to get into a game. I hate not being able to see how far along matches are only to join a game that is on the deciding round of a match and have the host leave after watching the round from a security cam.

I never thought I'd say it, but Halo 2's matchmaking is a dream in comparison to lobby style game selection. Once they add published custom games, it's going to be near flawless. Epic should have taken note.

Double WTF!!!! Ranked matches are all I tend to play with my friends. This is seriously dumb. If you're gonna do that now you have to make achievements available in Player matches too. This is sucking the fun out of multiplayer. The whole frickin reason for multiplayer is so I can play with friends!!! And disabling security cameras?!? Are you serious? The security cameras are already extremely limited and don't show much action. Now I can't even get a limited peek on where people are? We should have full camera control in all multiplayer matches! Just dumb Epic....Thanks

What if my friends suck though and are not even average? I'm not interested in stacking the odds....just wanna play with friends.

Same actually, and maybe the possibility that the grenade explodes in your hands if someone shot at it. Would certainly reduce the amount of 'headless chickens' that pick up the grenades and hold it at all times, not using any other weapon round after round.

Furthermore, I'm glad they got rid of the names in Ranked Matches. I rarely resort to playing with friends in Ranked Matches because it's unfair to the other side, and it became borderline obnoxious when I stumbled in a room like that nearly every time. As a result, Player Matches are much more fun to me, even without Achievements.

One of the reoccurring themes in Gears is how well a single individual can turn the tide of a match with a few well executed kills and/or orders. Before stacking rooms got out of hand, I played a lot of ranked matches with folks who learned to play well together because we used the voice communicator that XBL kindly provides us. If you are unable to organzie folks and get a team to work together, then practice as much as possible as a lone wolf in that match, and then in the next match you join, try to get a team to work together again from the outset. If you try, you will be amazed how many people can quickly adjust to the conditions and work as a team.

Then play non-ranked games. If they aren't good, you won't have to worry about getting most of the achievements anyway.
