Gears of War 4: Review Thread

I'm pleased with the reviews but seriously, this game needed to be a graphical showcase for Xbox One. Maybe they should've given it another year of development time and launched it with Scorpio.

Reviews overall seem very positive, I'm sure anyone looking forward to this game is not cancelling a purchase due to 'just' an 85 on metacritic lol.

Those people were never going to buy the game anyway. They just like to have a unit of measurement because they've realised nobody takes their opinions seriously.

but still, an 85 for a Gears of War game?? that's not good, imagine if Uncharted 4 scored 85 ? that would have been a flop

i feel bad for the people who got all hyped and bought an xbox one for the game, i told you not to get hyped, the game is obviously not a flop like Quantum break The order 1886, but for a Gears of War game ?? that's a flop

be warned, the next one will be The last Guardian, do not get hyped
Isthis the first meltdown of the thread?

I wonder if the game will see improved performance on Scorpio?

I can agree with this. U4 is a 6.5/7 tops for me.

I'm kind of surprised to see Gears 4 review so well, considering it seems to be a dead genre. Definitely want to give it a go.

I always get a confused look on my face when someone thinks a masterpiece is "average" and didn't expect much out of a flagship AAA.

Like, you realize the incredible expense and effort that goes into these things, right?

Anyway, fantastic reviews on this one! Congrats to the devs!

I thought that was the majority of players?

I dunno...in my circles at least, Gears have always been great because it brought couch co-op back.
Yeah, I'm hoping to get some friends together this weekend for a few hours of co-op. Some of my favorite gaming memories involve playing through the first Gears with my friends.

I am sure. Looking at how the pc options are. They can just tune that to Scorpio specs and done.

Yeah I definitely hope so.
Xbox One version will do for now but I don't own a powerful PC and I want to eventually be able to play Gears 4 in all of its glory.

Yeah. It's already a 4K game, albeit not on Xbox One obviously, but it will be ready to go when Scorpio launched afaik with a free update.

Edit:

What are your thoughts on the changing console landscape we're seeing with Project Scorpio and the PlayStation Neo? How much of an impact do you feel this might have on development?

Mike Rayner said:
For Gears development, we are in a really good position to leverage Project Scorpio to its fullest while continuing a no-compromise approach for all platforms we currently ship the game on. We have invested in scalable features in our engine to support a broad range of GPUs and performance profiles for PC and Console. We have authored our content at 4K, which allows us to show higher resolutions with increased source content detail on the highest end GPUs.

As a developer I find it very attractive having a universal platform to target and optimise our game across multiple Windows Devices: Xbox One, Xbox One S, Project Scorpio, and Windows 10. With the universal platform, we can do this in a manner that allows everyone to play together over Xbox Live without compromising our ability to push each device to its full potential while leaving none of our fans behind, no matter what device they play on.

Considering the Coalition pumped this game out in about 2.5 years, this is crazy impressive! Great work by Rod and his team and congrats Microsoft! I'm glad they're gaining some steam, the industry is at its best when everybody is doing well.

It is great that MS seems to have a developer that knows why Gears worked and it pays off.

The Gamespot review was interesting especially when criticize gears 4 on pacing....the same reviewer gave uncharted 4 a 10, a game with terrible pacing.

Having longer non-shooting sections is not necessarily bad pacing, it is just not what some people expected/wanted out of UC4. A lot of people see the non-shooting segments as a brief rest or some plot progression, but that is not the case in UC4. ND chose to make them just as significant as the action sequences. If you really only want to get to shoot up the next mob, then the criticism of UC4's pacing is more of a case of disliking the "walking simulator"-esque bits than the pacing actually being bad. Looking at the plot, variety in levels, character progression etc., I feel UC4 paces really well. The action usually only comes when it makes sense and there still is plenty of it. Furthermore, the game offers plenty of variety and each segments feels unique. And importantly, there is a clear line in gameplay progression as well.

In the end, pacing is a matter of taste and I thought UC4 paced incredibly well save for chapter 12.

Didn't get to post this, but my guess would have been an 87 overall so I'm close.

A lot of fans do and half of the reviews say the story is engaging.

I hoped that it would be a big improvement this time around but, nope. Doesn't look like it even comes close to those other highly acclaimed TPS's in the genre. Like hire better writers, damn.

Scores don't matter that much. I play Earth Defense Force 4.1 every week, enjoy it immensely and believe it's a much better designed and better playing game than Uncharted 4 or the previous Gears series. It's got a 65% on Gamerankings :)

Isn't it a graphical showcase? I think we're so used to great looking AAA games nowadays that we've become desensitised these days.

From what I was reading about the game's development they were saying technically this game is pushing the boundaries of computer science further than pretty much anything else out there. Also I read that the visual effects were done by studios that do shots for big budget Hollywood productions. And the tech they're using allows them import these Hollywood movie quality scenes into their pipeline in real time without any loss in fidelity.

Is your 2nd paragraph a joke? It looks good, but there are easily better looking games that have been already released. Where did you read this?

You are an insane person.

So it's the lowest rated main entry of the series by quite a bit of a margin. That's a bummer.

I hope it's just numbers and the game won't leave me with the feeling 'yep, that was worse than Gears 3', because that one already felt stale in the campaign. Although I'm pretty sure they celebrated that one to no end, so my opinion of Gears 4 might just be totally different.

Goddamn, review threads are glorious.

Thank you for your service to our country.

Looks good also. Dont mind the error about 4K widescreen

Maybe he meant downscaled 4k? :3
I'm glad it scored well but I wish it had 90+ just to see his reaction. Oh well hopefully Last Guardian will and we can see his spin.
I think LG will sell decently well but score mediocre. No matter the case, viper boy is posting the same shit in every thread so I'd hardly call it a meltdown or anything other than trolling.

A flop for an 85 Metacritic? You're part of the problem of this broken review scale. Get rid of numbers please.

How the fuck is 85 not great?. Review threads bring out the wackos and trolls.

If games are above 80 IMO it means its a good damn game. Hell 70 isnt bad. Above 90 should be for almost perfect games.

People are rediculous

I just find it really baffling that we're still assigning scores to reviews in 2016, I have always struggled to work out what weight do reviewers put on pros and cons when reviewing any game. For example Gamespot gave it a 7/10, but if you're coming into this Gears for it's multiplayer elements then would they give it a 10/10? and if so how can you put a number on an experience when everyones wants and needs are so specific in this day and age that the very idea of a number is completely irrelevant. In the old days of say a Mario or a Sonic it made more sense because you bought those games for the entire experience, what you saw is what you got, but in this day and age games are so feature packed that why are we assigning any kind of number to the game overall? why are we not at the very least having multiple scores for each facet of the game so then you still get the casual reader clicks who wanna just see the number and make a decision based on that BUT at the very least they can then look and see "Oh multiplayer is a 10/10, well thats a must buy for me then because that's all I wanna play" you still get your clicks but you actually provide something meaningful rather than quite literally a reviewer sitting down and going "hmm....what number can I give this as I have no structure or handbook to put this review through that will spit out a consistent number for every review I do" It just makes sense to me but...what do I know :)

(The Gamespot review was just an example as for the most part it looks out of place compared to most other reviews, not that a 7/10 isnt good to be clear)

I don't understand the number system either. It seems so random to me. I'm surprised more review sites haven't adopted Steam's user review approach. Do a write up or video and either recommend the game or not. I've also come to learn that fanboys really love numbers.
