Gears of Ware: Exile - Cancelled

Has there even been a successfully add on that offered so little use? Hardly any software has come out for kinect. Its been a huge dissappointment to me.

So I guess having a dance off to pop songs like "Hollaback Girl" and "Beat It" between Cole Train and General Raam was not a good idea.

Since there are a few people in here who seem to want to have a conversation about Kinect more broadly (and since there's no actual news in the OP -- a game we knew was cancelled was announced as having been cancelled with no further information on what it ever was), I thought I'd list the Kinect software I've played.

I'll bold the games I recommend to people in the game's target audience

Here are the games I've played on Kinect:
Kinect Adventures - Fun diversion
Kinect Sports - Not quite as well executed as Wii Sports, still fairly enjoyable
Kinect Joy Ride
Kinectimals - Really adorable for young kids
Dance Central - Excellent dance game
Michael Jackson: The Experience
Child of Eden - More fun with Kinect (/Move), but easier with a controller.
The Gunstringer - Hilarious, and hardcore mode is just about as difficult as anything on the platform
Fruit Ninja Kinect - Great re-imagining of the game, fun in two-player
Hole in the Wall - Presentation is quite poor, but it's a great workout
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire 2012
The Adventures of Tintin - I do recommend this game but the Kinect mode is a sort of throwaway extra
Dance Central 2 - Massive improvement to the original in all respects, excellent two-player mode.
Once Upon a Monster - Really adorable for young kids
Disneyland Adventures - Spectacular for young kids, probably one of the most content-heavy games released this generation, would take 100+ hours to finish. Visually stunning.
Double Fine Happy Action Theatre - Hilarious, especially while drinking
Mass Effect 3 - I do recommend this game, and the Kinect voice detection is well implemented but ultimately superfluous.
Leadmees
Haunt - Good execution of Kinect walking controls.

(+ the free Kinect Fun Labs stuff which range from enjoyable novelties to stupid and broken)

In the future I'm looking forward to Crimson Dragon and Wreckateer. Maybe Steel Battalion.

More than a dozen recommended titles in a year and a bit ain't bad. On the whole, I'd say most of the experiences I've had with Kinect have fallen into a relatively limited range of game designs. But if you stick to what's well executed and have an open mind to different types of game, you'll find good stuff there. I don't think it replaces all other systems or anything foolish like that, but if you own a Kinect and you're wondering what you should be playing, my advice would just be to actually try stuff. There are a lot of demos out there. Maybe something will catch your attention. This is true for most platforms that people complain about, to be honest.

Kinect would have vastly, vastly more potential for core gaming if MS just stopped taking the "you are the controller" tagline literally and released a cheap one-handed controller with a single analog stick and a few buttons; as it is, it's basically impossible to design a functional control scheme for anything that requires character freedom of movement. Well, maybe on the next console.

Presumably this had been greenlighted by Microsoft and approved enough to be prepped for announcement at the VGAs. I wonder what changed their mind? Maybe the leak, the speculation and the general negativity from the net was enough for them to not risk damaging the brand name.

... and Xbox 360 World Magazine said the title was to be officially unveiled at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Certainly bodes well for their Nextbox rumours. :p

Kinect has been such a let-down for me (personnal take) that I have a lot of trouble to understand it's success. I mean, I understand that this is a "Wii-type" with broader audience than the initial target population of the console, but the Wii had really great games coming.

It's fairly Ok to have it (bought it bundled with the Slim so I did not ruin myself) but I am a bit sad that Dance Central was the only game that really stoud out.

Exile might not have changed that, but seeing such type of cancelation only support my feeling that MS is currently using Kinect as a "casual bait" most exclusively.

If games like Dance Central, The Gunstringer, Fruit Ninja and Happy Action Theater have no appeal to you, I have to wonder why you'd ever consider purchasing Kinect. Do people really buy products solely in hope that something relevant to them might come out? If Kinect is gathering dust for you it isn't because it has no games, it's because you made a silly purchase. It was clear from day one that Kinect was mostly going to provide family/community/party gaming.

That doesn't mean it has to be bottom of the barrel, mini games and shovelware. Games like Wreckateer can use the technology in fun and inventive, if not original ways and Fruit Ninja is infinitely more fun than it has any right to be. The Gunstringer has wonderful presentation and solid gameplay, as does Child of Eden, and the children's games Stump mentioned in his list are some of the best available for any console.

It's disappointing when a project like this is cancelled, but personally there are still enough meaty titles out and in the works to satiate my limited hunger for hardcore controller-less games (hybrid games is another matter entirely, and I hope there's a lot more of that to come). But if Kinect's current selection of games has no appeal to you I do wonder why you'd ever own it in the first place.

Then issue with Kinect is it doesn't fuckin work half the time. Especially when trying to have multiple people join, leave come back etc. With one person who knows what they are doing its ok but at a party most of the time you need a driver to get the games set up.

Can't blame them, the Kinect is an interesting prototype but the hardware they released is in no shape or form ready for commercial use. Even for casual games it's extremely hit & miss so trying to implement it into a serious-business shooter would have been horrific.

It reminds me very much of the Wii at launch - only they were able to release a little dongle to 'fix' the wiimote. I'd happily pay for the missing dedicated cpu dongle if it got it running at full resolution again (at the moment it's half resolution due to the USB data speeds right?).

Rise of Nightmares is worth playing too. Crazy story and visuals, good music and fun combat. Only real drag is horrendous navigation.

I wonder how the game was supposed to be played... More than the games themselves, I find it interesting to see how game designers choose to include motion detection in the mechanics.

Since it's list time, I'll add two of my own suggestions, both from Konami :
Dance Master / Dance Evolution : more "game-y" than dance central, but also with a better diversity, crazy songs and moves, power-ups and hidden stars. You have to like japanese pop or DDR-like songs, though.
Rhythm Party - XBLA game, you need to hit bubbles on the screen like in Samba de Amigo, any way you like. Bonus points for doing special moves, and you can see your silhouette dancing on screen, which is great. The default song are so-so (but YMCA and Lady Gaga song are fun), and there are 5 packs of songs available as DLC (n°4 is great fun).

*edit :
and Diabolical Pitch : only halfway through, but it's a good traditional arcade game, with a good use of motion.
Has there even been a successfully add on that offered so little use? Hardly any software has come out for kinect. Its been a huge dissappointment to me.

Wii Fit was a huge hit, and only sold for two games. Eyetoy had maybe 5 games worth mentioning. We could also mention light guns or fishing rods, but I'm not sure they can be considered successful.
Kinect may have had more ambitions, but it already has more diversity than any add-on before it.

Then issue with Kinect is it doesn't fuckin work half the time. Especially when trying to have multiple people join, leave come back etc. With one person who knows what they are doing its ok but at a party most of the time you need a driver to get the games set up.
That is more down to developers trying to best handle such a new way of interacting with the game. There are elegant and inelegant ways of dealing with players leaving and joining and menu navigation, and the likes of Harmonix and Double Fine have created standards that really should be duplicated elsewhere.

I think that next gen's Kinect will fix many of the problems of the current one. Unfortunately many of the lessons are now being learned with retail games. With that said, I think that the best implementation of Kinect will lie in it working side by side with a controller. Navigating menus with Kinect can be a nightmare.

How are less precise controls (which at times bugs out) more fun? (Referring to Kinect only)

I don't know what to tell you. I've played the game. It's a few feet away from me. I found it more engaging and interesting when I was using my hands to control it. I'm not a diehard Rez fan or anything, I don't have any input on how the game compares on a deep level, and I'm not going to be anywhere near the top one trillion people on the scoreboards. So at the level I play the game at, I found it more interesting when playing it with Kinect.

I didn't experience any kind of "bug out" moments, nor any less of precision--although the controls are "slower" with Kinect and you definitely spend more time thinking about what you're doing and less time reflexively reacting.

Haters can hate all they want, but most of you bought plastic guitars for one or two guitar games, Kinect is more than worth the price of admission for dance central 1 and 2. Everything else is a bonus.
